  • retroarch.cfg gets corrupted - it shrinks from ~93 kb to ~6 kb. Make sure you have a backup of this file!

- pcfx core had always worked with the one game I tried, but never full-speed.

- snes9x_next = snes9x2010

- snes9x2005 (non-Plus) was not full-speed on its debut, but it got fixed rather quickly. Compare this to mednafen_neopop - at some point, it would boot games but the controls wouldn't work - and it disappeared for about 2 years.

- SuperGrafx is not a clone of pce_fast; it plays the six SuperGrafx games in addition to all PCE/TG-16 carts and CDs. pce_fast is actually the clone. I guess it's broken up this way much like the FBA cores are for lower-memory platforms. At some point, pce_fast couldn't play CD games, but SuperGrafx could - not sure if this is the case anymore.

- might want to add a link to the list of MSU-1 games I made - I update it periodically.

Will add it in the Notes Section in the table above.
Its not 100% accurate yet, but its fairly close.. (your post will help)
These are just cores that have been added in official versions.
There is more that can be added to the table. This is just a base for now

Mednafen_PCE_Fast

  • TurboGrafx 16 / PC Engine
  • TurboGrafx CD / PC Engine CD
  • SuperGrafx

This core should emulate all three system (if working properly) i know this core had some regression where CD games were not booting but it can boot CD games as well as SuperGrafx games. (at least older versions of this core did). I know i played alot of supergrafx on this core: but these docs https://docs.libretro.com/library/beetle_pce_fast/ also does state the supergrarfx has been removed but unless this happened in the recent i am going to disagree lol :)

  • from my understanding was just the SuperGrafx Games and as you said i was also under the impression this core was for lower memory platforms. Where things like neogeo / cps1/cps2/ are separated from the main core. That has been my assumption with this core but my assumption could be wrong..

Yes - but I think it was called fbalpha_next, originally.

EDIT - nope, fb_alpha = fbalpha2012, it probably was changed to avoid confusion with fbalpha.

O2EM works, but there is no way to get past the "Select Difficulty" screen (needs some additional controls hooked up - on the PC version you simply press a number key).

EDIT- Odyssey2 came with a keyboard, O2EM needs a virtual keyboard like Hatari.

Going to test the whole pce_fast/SuperGrafx thing soon.

EDIT - pce_fast does NOT play SuperGrafx games. CD games work, though. Also, there are 5 SuperGrafx-only games, plus 2 "hybrids". And PCE/TG-16 games came on cards, not cartridges.

Any other questions, just ask - I am doing this mostly off the top of my head.

Not sure when this change occurred (I don't mess with PrBoom too much), but it has a MAJOR improvement - Dehacked data is now loaded. This means that many mods can now be played correctly - before, they would act very strangely, or be unplayable, without the DEH data. The first level of Batman Doom is now beatable, for example.

Another change is a Core Option titled "Look for IWAD in parent folder" (or something similar - enabled by default). This eliminates the old patch-the-mod-with-the-appropriate-IWAD technique from years ago. It basically makes PrBoom work like Tyrquake now, in regards to loading content.

I still think the standalone PS3 PrBoom port is better - there's native music support, no need to extract files from the WAD and convert them - but RetroArch PrBoom is now much improved.

- Setting up your Doom mods

Unlike Tyrquake, where you can have multiple PAK files and/or external data, RetroArch PrBoom requires all data be packed into a single WAD file (there are utilities for this).

1. Create a folder called doom

2. Put doom.wad in here (most Doom 1 mods won't work with the shareware doom1.wad).

3. Put folders with your mods in this folder, i.e....

doom
->some_mod
->some_other_mod
->yet_another_mod

etc.

4. Repeat these steps for Doom 2 (doom2.wad) The Plutonia Experiment (plutonia.wad), and TNT: Evilution (tnt.wad). Most mods use Doom 2, some Doom 1. I've found 2 that use Plutonia, but none for TNT.

5. Go to the mod's folder and load its WAD file. If set up correctly (and if PrBoom can actually play the mod - some are designed for more advanced source ports than PrBoom), it should load.

Some mods i could not get to run and some had issues, but here was all the mods that myself and @Pete_uk tinkered with back then.

not sure if PCE_fast is broken or the core was segregated (that is my curiosity)

You can checkout some previous versions of RetroArch @ brewology and see SuperGrafx worked on PCE-Fast.
The Ghost and Gouls (different name) port is very good on SuperGrafx and I played very often throughout retroarch lifespan and as you see from the almost accurate chart (lol) a few post above that supergrafx core was introduced much later,

Then from there it should be very easy to extract a proper official core list (with all the working cores and then the non working removed) and see issue all in one easy spot. Which hopefully helps the official version and/or team see what they should be compiling and adding in the official/nigthly releases. .

Ah, yes, that thread reminds me of the good old days - @Pete_uk and I once engaged in a rather long discussion about Doom mods in a different forum. It's too bad he's not around anymore.

All of those mods (plus many more) run fine in the standalone version. They should work in RetroArch - the DeHacked thing is a real game-changer. I remember trying Ghostbusters Doom in RetroArch back then - I couldn't last more than 10 seconds, because rockets came flying at me from EVERYWHERE. With DeHacked support, it plays like it should - no rocket rain. :)

I might throw together a Doom mod like I did for Quake - just have to decide which one from the 1 GB of mods I have sitting around.

I also distinctly remember playing SGX games with pce_fast in previous versions. According to the INFO files (which aren't always accurate), the SuperGrafx core supports .SGX extensions, but pce_fast does not. Although the SuperGrafx games I have have the .PCE extension, pce_fast does not play them (it loads to an non-frozen black screen).

I'm so happy to see this thread.
I was about to buy a SNES classic mini, when i thought: "Hey, I have a PS3 lying there... Maybe I should try to turn that into a retro gaming system".
So I updated the PS3 to 4.82 cfw, and downloaded the last retroarch version from the official website.
The idea is to play retrogames on the living room, and I'll try to make it easy to use for my girlfriend.
So, I plan to tweak the theme downloading thumbnails. and then maybe using the kiosk option (??)
Anyway, thanks for sharing the info, and I'll keep you posted with my updates.

- fbalpha was not renamed to fbalpha2012 - fb_alpha was. fbalpha is based off a current version of FBA, fb_alpha was based on an older version.

- snes9x_next was renamed to snes9x2010, not snes9x2011.

- snes9x_2010 is not capable of playing MSU-1 games, snes9x is. (Too many similarly-named cores, LOL.)

- o2em doesn't necessarily need a virtual keyboard, but it does need some keyboard number keys mapped to the RetroPad, at least. Sort of like fMSX.

- snes9x2005 Plus has always worked when it was included, IIRC.

Ahhh, Okay that explains a few things, but man just shows how messed up these cores have been when they disappear and are replaced with a new name but its a different core. .. A standard list the light is at end of the tunnel lol

- o2em doesn't necessarily need a virtual keyboard, but it does need some keyboard number keys mapped to the RetroPad, at least. Sort of like fMSX.

- snes9x2005 Plus has always worked when it was included, IIRC.

- I don't think cannonball needs more testing - it just doesn't work (correctly).

First time i post this in public, the table for the cores was something i wanted to do when i saw a huge list made by Zar with info about how good/bad the cores works, the core requirements for compilation, source code problems, etc...
It was info specially useful for developers, but also to normal users that wants to know why XXX core doesnt works (and will never work until someone "ports" or "rewrites" YYY)

Additionally i been keeping an eye at STLcardsWS work documenting cores and retroarch versions, and the reports here from other users
Since i was made forum moderator i started experimenting with tables (im a table freak because psdevwiki) and i was trying to see how many "magic tricks" are supported in xenforo, so i was making several experiments with this retroarch table :)
My goal was to make a single huge table with everything related with cores inside, coloring table cells was the first experiment (sucessfull) but the other day was added this BBcode to the forum (see how is used in the next example as "tags" that doesnt fills the cell, and can be used "inline" aligned with texts)

This is the third version of the table, the initial version was made days/week ago and i said to STLcardsWS to use it because it was prioritary to have a base table to start working
That way i was able continue making other experiments in private (like the "tags" for dynarec, openGL, C98, etc...) without having to be hurry, and at some point i was going to copy all the info from STLcardsWS in my table (or this was my plan), but we never made an agreement about this, it was just the way i imagined we could work together to make a big sexy table

Now it looks you are thinking in splitting them ?, and we have not speaked in public about the idea of adding the "tags" (DYN, OGL, C98, BLK, etc...), i wanted to ask zar and other people incase they have some good ideas

Additionally, in this last version i have changed the colors of the "color filled" cells because:
-The table had too much red, this is visually negative, not likeable (and not needed)
-The BUG is what really deserves to be red :)
-N/A in lightgrey is more neutral, good because most of the table is going to be filled with this color
-REP is an alternative to N/A... actually i was thinking in using also REN (renamed) and REM (removed) all in the same lightgrey color
-The colors used are the same than the PS1/PS2/PSP "emulator compatibility lists" in psdevwiki
-I added 2 colors for ISS, yellow and orange (minor and mayor issues)

Im posting this in public because i would like to hear your oppinions @STLcardsWS @JediKnight007 @Zar or other people interested

About the ISS... i just added 2 to give you more room, are like 2 intermediate levels in between the "OK" (works great), and the "BUG" (completly broken)... but you have to decide

And @Zar the 4 "tags" i added (DYN, C98, OGL, BLK) are enought ? or do you think are needed more ?
I noticed some weird cores in your list, as example uae4arm (only for ARM processors, so doesnt works as expected), can you imagine some way to "label" them with tags to cover everything ?
We can make much more :)

Is a wayaround though because by reading the tag we dont know what that "other" means, but is fine, by now allows me to think all that cell/tag color selection is completed

Yeah, that list is right, but there is no libretro snes9x_2011 core. But there is a snes9x_2002 core...

Looks like you have about every scenario covered on the version table's . I think that table will be great when we have all the details labeled correctly. The PS3 ports needs a standard list of what works and what does not. The libretro team does not have a correct set by what they are going by..

Credits of the colored "tags" at right column goes to @Zar for making an awesome list with all that info some months ago, he checked all source codes and compiled all the ones that allowed to be compiled, and played them (and he even fixed a few problems in the source codes of some)
Please dont hype with the cores marked with OKC, this means the core compiles, is very important because is the first step to make the core run in PS3, but i guess in everyone of them could be added some details of what happens when you boot it
The info in other colums is from STLcardsWS and JediKnight007

They knows all this waaaaaaaaay better than me, i know the table is missing lot of info they posted... now is needed to fill the table with better info or correct some mistake
At this point is mostly an initial version to see how it looks :)

The last thing i was doing is to add links at the right column for some cores... like the links for snes9x2010 with MSU-1 game list, etc...
But i stopped (i made just 3 cores like that with links) because im not sure how many things "we want" to indicate there
Actually... with this method can be added lot of links, but im not sure if is better to use another table for it (like what STLcardsWS was doing)

Also, it seems there are some infos that are repetitive (like the "needs a keyboard") that could be replaced by new tags (like: KEY)
But this is another detail under discussion... how many info are we going to add at right ?
