PS3 RetroArch v1.3 -- PlayStation 3 (PS3) DEX/CEX Version

RetroArch (PS3) v1.3 is officially here, it has been sometime ago since we seen an official update for RetroArch to hit the PS3, the previous official version was v1.0.0.2. While the community has seen some unofficial compiles in recent months, such as Ezio_PS with his compiles of v1.2.2. If you have used those unofficial releases you will see even more new things then what was in those recent compiles. There is alot of new eye-candy in this update as the emulator gets a new XMB MENU and is now the default User Interface, Also there is some new cores (emulated systems) that are present in this release [break]ss[/break], some of these additions we seen in the Unofficial Compiles of Ezio_PS and since have matured a bit and some new additions have been brought on as well. These details and more can be seen in the information provided by libretro.com and also psx-place.com.

There could be a quick release of v1.3.1, the release of the PS3 version has a bit of mystery attached to it, as the version was announced along with the other RetroArch v1.3 updates for other platforms. As all platforms expect for the PS3 version are hosted on the libretro.com website, but the PS3 version as in the past appears over at xbins.org. There is a release listing that is there for this version of RetroArch on the PS3, but it lacks the download link. One of Team Libretro developers huntrek stated that he thinks it was pulled for some last minutes fixes, but he is not the lead dev on the PS3 port and as we have tried to reach out on twitter and posted in the forums and seen the official announcement is not corrected... So, with that said and not alot of conformation we are unsure if this was pulled or the xbins FTP is where the desired download location was all along. I have tested this version a bit myself along with others and i will say its more stable then the recent unofficial compiles and adds some new features and cores. but its remains unknown at this time if this was pulled or just a sloppy release in the terms in how it was posted, not a sloppy product as the RetroArch team has really done some amazing stuff especially with this update..

So take a look at this release, as its something that is been hyped for a bit and promised for a long time to PS3 users. For CFW CEX user's there is no CEX version at this time, but if your a REBUG CFW user and on one of the latest builds of REX you can use DEX packages on CEX, without a convert to CEX

RetroArch (PS3) v1.3

What's New for RetroArch - PlayStation3 (PS3)
The PS3 version features some big changes. MaterialUI and XMB are both available now as menu drivers. The XMB menu driver is now enabled by default. Libretro database support is in, and things should generally work fine.

I released only the DEX version. PS3 sceners can take the DEX release and create a CEX version of it.

New Cores

 • prosystem_libretro -- Atari 7800
 • vecx_libretro --- Vectrex
 • mednafen_psx_libretro --- PlayStation 1
 • mednafen_pcfx_libretro -- NEC PCFX
 • mednafen_lynx_libretro - Atari Lynx
 • mednafen_gba_libretro - GameBoy Advance
 • handy_libretro - Atari Lynx
 • gw_libretro - Nintendo Game & Watch
 • 2048_libretro - 2048 Homebrew Game

Improved playlist support

 • Both PlayStation1 and PSP games can now be scanned. Once the games are scanned and identified inside the database, they are added to a system-specific playlist. This makes it easy and convenient for you to start these games by just going to the playlist and selecting them instead of having to go through the filesystem and manually select the file again.
Revamped user interface

 • There was a ton of criticism about version 1.2's user interface on mobile devices, like Android. We have decided to give it a makeover. It now resembles a Material Design user interface and some of the annoying display bugs were fixed on Android. It now also has tabs at the bottom which you can touch. This can quickly take you to the playlists and/or settings screen.
 • XMB has also received a makeover. A bunch of actions now have their own tabs inside the horizontal menu. For instance, you can now scan for content by going to the 'Add' tab and selecting a directory instead of having to navigate through a bunch of menus. The history list is also now on a separate tab, as is the settings themselves.
RetroArch/libretro's reach

 • We don't like to brag a lot and we don't like self posturing. Nevertheless, RetroArch and libretro is definitely starting to become omnipresent. Plenty of people have used it in some form or another without even being aware of its name or its existence. For instance, there have been plenty of projects unrelated to us or the team (like NewRetroArcade) which were actually just libretro frontends implementing the libretro API, and the popular Raspberry Pi distribution RetroPie for instance uses RetroArch for a lot of the videogame emulation it provides.
 • Not everything has gone according to plan. We had to do a very substantial rewrite this past year that has definitely been daunting and some of you noticed that things didn't progress as fast as we'd like but we are finally out of development hell again and ready to fire on all cylinders again. There will never again be another half a year delay in development due to endless rewrites.
What's next for RetroArch
 • RetroArch 1.4 (the next version) will bring RetroArch to two new platforms.

Looking at psx-place and in accordance with the passion PS3 users have in respect of RA, i'm feeling wrong to not share the CEX version of RA 1.3, so I'm just going to share it, anyway some annoying bugs and not working cores can happen (that's the reason why i didn't share it before). I guess people would like to take a look at new wonderful XMB gui, so here it's. https://www.sendspace.com/file/cxtvwr

For bin / cue cd based games, make sure you have all the bios in the "system" folder in the RA directory.

Start up RA

Go to option settings right column and scroll down to directory, second to last option.
The first option in there is set system/BIOS
Choose that and go through the folders to "game / SSNE10000 / USRDIR / cores / system" and set it.

Then you should be able to boot sega cd, turbo cd, psx, etc. by clicking on their cue files.

I've been testing the CEX build of 1.3 uploaded by Ezio and it seems to not be working as good as 1.0.0.2 or as beta 1.2.2:
- Launching a SNES rom from IRISMAN, I got a black screen (it didn't happen to me with the beta 1.2.2).
- Launching a SNES rom as zip, as folder or as sfc from RetroArch RGUI, returned to XMB.
- Launching a PSX ISO from RetroArch RGUI, the ISO was not detected and selecting the cue returned to XMB.
- I didn't find where to switch to XMB mode.
- On various menu options of RetroArch RGUI, there was not way to return to previous menu, forcing me to exit to XMB and restart the application.

For the moment I'll stick to 1.0.0.2 until a more stable is available.

To Switch GUIs,
Go to Drivers and then Menu. (then scroll with dpad left and right once on menu. ) (edit: did not see post above me :) )

I am with you ATM on v1.0.0.2 .. (this is why i liked the cores separate for RetroXMB, these updates can do some messy things at times, but one can always delete and go back as well when using default cores .)

Any way to add the missing unofficial cores like Jaguar?

Yes and No :)

Ezio can maybe compile them for v1.3 (but may be wiser once these bugs are addressed)

You can add the old ones, and they should work, but it would be based off v1.2.2 . so no xmb menu and such would be there for those cores when selected and i would imagine there could be some general side affects if there is difference or conflicts in the retroarch.cfg file when switching between cores, but in past versions (ones i tested) have worked, but with so many changes this time around i can not say it will work, just will have to try and see what it does.

How was PSX on RetroArch , This core was in one of pete_uk unofficial compiles back around v0.9.9 or so at request from squarepusher if I am not mistaken to show the limitations without dynarec support. So was curious if it was runing full speed or close to it, because before it will boot most anything just run at half speed.

In-Game Settings are nice but noticed

Issues/bug
------------------
ScreenShot features does not work (really just need it to pause so CFW user can just use the regular XMB screenshot option)
Genesis_plus_GX core working, but noticed that it saves the state (assuming with no errors or could be cause of next-->) but loading the game save it fails.

When these bugs get irons out the XMB Gui is really a nice touch they did it well. Just have to get everything working now. Which i know they will just hope they give the PS3 some extra attention as its needed to polish this release

I only tried sega cd & turbo cd games since we have other methods for psx games.
I can't get any snes game running at all like aldostools pointed out.

Sega cd needs the BIOS files in the same place as the bin/cue files. Tried both lunar games and they work well.

NES, SNES & GBA i could not get to work. i did not try the new GBA core (that one i think requires bios, tried a test compile of that a very long time ago, was choppy back then_.
Genesis_plus_GX core seems to work fine (loading states only issue so far)

strange. check this out:

that's the vita version of retroarch I just took a picture of. I just checked snes to see if I had such issues. no issue running snes. sorry for the crap game as it was the first one in the goodmerge set. might be an issue with the ps3 version only. I haven't checked my 3ds one.

I can't get GBA working either and have the bios. It worked fine on the betas.
Didnt test the mednafen version but so far nintendo emu's are a no-go.

kadorna2

I know. I tested eternal champions cd & pitfall mayan adventures.

Turbo CD games work fine too. Tested castlevania rondo of blood & snatcher.

btw, I used vita ftp to place the first game I had in the cores folder. I'm not sure which folder is normal. it worked nonetheless. it said something about the vita controller when booting, but I wasn't paying attention.

edit: I don't use my rejuvenate too often since u have to renew ur license daily, but apparently it works better here. :)

genesis/sega cd works, nes works with fceumm core (didn't try the others), PRBOOM works, fbalpha works, snes DOESN'T work, when loading the core first and then the rom it throws you back at the xmb, when loading a file and detecting core it freezes the console.

does anyone know if using older cores work with the new gui? i also want to know if using the fbalpha self with the fbalpha retro loader works too

when you use an older core it will show the menu from that core. if you use an older core from v1.2.2 beta then it will be that menu when that core is loaded, but i havent tested with this version but that is how it worked in the past and i would expect the same but as i mentioned before it can have some conflicts in the cfg file (but unlikely).

Which games are you trying on fceu?
I just tried Super mario bros. and legend of zelda and neither worked (.nes extensions ).

I doubt any differences but DEX or CEX version installed?

DEX version, smb+duck hunt works well, smb3 and kirby's adventure throw me back to the xmb

EDIT

tyrquake doesn't work either, with both quake 1 expansions

smb 3 works fine on the vita/pstv, so there must be some major issues with the ps3 version if it's even a priority anymore:

Yes, sure, anyway RA needs to become more stable before, these new gui have a bit broken the cores compatibility, at least for ps3.

Tyrquake works fine for me, such as the super mario bross games using fceumm core.

STLcardsWS did you notice display issues on the main menu using the new MaterialUI ? I have overscan issues on my two TVs.

Why is this uploaded(CEX version) to one of the slowest filehosting sites known to man? Sendspace is just terribly slow to download a file from. Could we please get some mirrors? Thanks!

Which one is the MaterialUI exactly?
