PS3 RetroArch v1.3 -- PlayStation 3 (PS3) DEX/CEX Version

RetroArch (PS3) v1.3 is officially here, it has been sometime ago since we seen an official update for RetroArch to hit the PS3, the previous official version was v1.0.0.2. While the community has seen some unofficial compiles in recent months, such as Ezio_PS with his compiles of v1.2.2. If you have used those unofficial releases you will see even more new things then what was in those recent compiles. There is alot of new eye-candy in this update as the emulator gets a new XMB MENU and is now the default User Interface, Also there is some new cores (emulated systems) that are present in this release [break]ss[/break], some of these additions we seen in the Unofficial Compiles of Ezio_PS and since have matured a bit and some new additions have been brought on as well. These details and more can be seen in the information provided by libretro.com and also psx-place.com.

There could be a quick release of v1.3.1, the release of the PS3 version has a bit of mystery attached to it, as the version was announced along with the other RetroArch v1.3 updates for other platforms. As all platforms expect for the PS3 version are hosted on the libretro.com website, but the PS3 version as in the past appears over at xbins.org. There is a release listing that is there for this version of RetroArch on the PS3, but it lacks the download link. One of Team Libretro developers huntrek stated that he thinks it was pulled for some last minutes fixes, but he is not the lead dev on the PS3 port and as we have tried to reach out on twitter and posted in the forums and seen the official announcement is not corrected... So, with that said and not alot of conformation we are unsure if this was pulled or the xbins FTP is where the desired download location was all along. I have tested this version a bit myself along with others and i will say its more stable then the recent unofficial compiles and adds some new features and cores. but its remains unknown at this time if this was pulled or just a sloppy release in the terms in how it was posted, not a sloppy product as the RetroArch team has really done some amazing stuff especially with this update..

So take a look at this release, as its something that is been hyped for a bit and promised for a long time to PS3 users. For CFW CEX user's there is no CEX version at this time, but if your a REBUG CFW user and on one of the latest builds of REX you can use DEX packages on CEX, without a convert to CEX

RetroArch (PS3) v1.3

What's New for RetroArch - PlayStation3 (PS3)
The PS3 version features some big changes. MaterialUI and XMB are both available now as menu drivers. The XMB menu driver is now enabled by default. Libretro database support is in, and things should generally work fine.

I released only the DEX version. PS3 sceners can take the DEX release and create a CEX version of it.

New Cores

  • prosystem_libretro -- Atari 7800
  • vecx_libretro --- Vectrex
  • mednafen_psx_libretro --- PlayStation 1
  • mednafen_pcfx_libretro -- NEC PCFX
  • mednafen_lynx_libretro - Atari Lynx
  • mednafen_gba_libretro - GameBoy Advance
  • handy_libretro - Atari Lynx
  • gw_libretro - Nintendo Game & Watch
  • 2048_libretro - 2048 Homebrew Game

Improved playlist support

  • Both PlayStation1 and PSP games can now be scanned. Once the games are scanned and identified inside the database, they are added to a system-specific playlist. This makes it easy and convenient for you to start these games by just going to the playlist and selecting them instead of having to go through the filesystem and manually select the file again.
Revamped user interface

  • There was a ton of criticism about version 1.2's user interface on mobile devices, like Android. We have decided to give it a makeover. It now resembles a Material Design user interface and some of the annoying display bugs were fixed on Android. It now also has tabs at the bottom which you can touch. This can quickly take you to the playlists and/or settings screen.
  • XMB has also received a makeover. A bunch of actions now have their own tabs inside the horizontal menu. For instance, you can now scan for content by going to the 'Add' tab and selecting a directory instead of having to navigate through a bunch of menus. The history list is also now on a separate tab, as is the settings themselves.
RetroArch/libretro's reach

  • We don't like to brag a lot and we don't like self posturing. Nevertheless, RetroArch and libretro is definitely starting to become omnipresent. Plenty of people have used it in some form or another without even being aware of its name or its existence. For instance, there have been plenty of projects unrelated to us or the team (like NewRetroArcade) which were actually just libretro frontends implementing the libretro API, and the popular Raspberry Pi distribution RetroPie for instance uses RetroArch for a lot of the videogame emulation it provides.
  • Not everything has gone according to plan. We had to do a very substantial rewrite this past year that has definitely been daunting and some of you noticed that things didn't progress as fast as we'd like but we are finally out of development hell again and ready to fire on all cylinders again. There will never again be another half a year delay in development due to endless rewrites.
What's next for RetroArch
  • RetroArch 1.4 (the next version) will bring RetroArch to two new platforms.

Looking at psx-place and in accordance with the passion PS3 users have in respect of RA, i'm feeling wrong to not share the CEX version of RA 1.3, so I'm just going to share it, anyway some annoying bugs and not working cores can happen (that's the reason why i didn't share it before). I guess people would like to take a look at new wonderful XMB gui, so here it's. https://www.sendspace.com/file/cxtvwr

Is it possible use this on Cobra ode or Not custom firmware?
And is there Dreamkast emulator?

Possible yes (as previous version have appeared for ODEs) but i think needs to be prepared a certain way, which i do not have any knowledge of personally as ODEs are a waste in my opinion

There is a dreamcast core but its not for the ps3 port or any of the playstation devices retroarch runs on.

Any one other then me notice the man article says the app scans for PSP ISO's as well?

For other platforms not the PS3 version. Those changes are across the board and a point like PSP ISOs for example would not be included as there is no working PSP core for that.

However would be cool to see a mod or fork to RetroArch (ones the bugs are ironed) that added support for launching PSP/PS3/PSX/PS2 (from the native emus) from RetroArch's GUI.

I tested the 360 version albeit an earlier version:

strange that it should be missing from the new versions. ?

In the last days i tried to build a ODE version for this RA and for the older and more stable RA 1.2.2 but i couldn't test it since i haven't a Cobre ode. If you're interested i could upload them.
Which one is the MaterialUI exactly?
The one with the white background, it has been redesigned to follow the latest Android UI available (the one ported by Android Lollipop).

From what I have read it seems the PS3 version seems to still have big time bugs.. So I will most likely go back to 1.2.2 until it gets hashed out..

there is no dynarec for CELL and nobody seems to want to make one. otherwise we could possibly have a wii/gc emulator running at at least 20fps and, of course, n64 emulation at full speed

That was tricky question :) You're right here, only problem is that in original Mupen 64 nobody implemented ppc64 dynarec. So is not that we never gonna see N64 emulation on PS3, we just need talented developer that like working 16 hours per day for free under pressure of community. :p But impossible is nothing.

I just so happen to have one of these developer thingies, let me check my pockets...

having problems with the CEX version

I downloaded the CEX version since the DEX didnt work and when I go into it all it does is blink a bunch of times and goes back to the xmb.. I have rebug/rex cobra 4.78

I've started using a hybrid install. I installed 1.3 CEX, and Genesis Plus GX works actually better than previous versions because you can save per-game core options, so I can set the Sega Master System BIOS to run before each game like a real SMS would. Then I extracted the other cores from the 1.2.2 Unofficial Beta 1.7 for MAME, FCEU, Stella, and Prosystem (atari 7800) and copied those into the \\devhdd0\game\ssnes00001\usrdir\cores\ folder manually.

The old cores won't run the xmb menu, but at least they run correctly and don't crash. Reasonable compromise until they get the bugs sorted out.

I'm wondering why we didn't get picodrive on this release? 32X support would be nice.

Plus their are two other mames for ps3.. 0.125 by Ole and 0.142 by Robo Hobo.
They each have different compatibility. 0.125 plays Night Slashers and 0.142 plays Golden Axe RODA.

Inspired OSD code from the 0.125 ps3 port is even in retroarch's mame2010 core.

1.) There have been other mame cores in the past, but mame0.78 works best on the PS3. There was other libretro cores and 0.78 always performed best. Squarepusher gave reason of this a long time ago but not sure where.

2.) 32X would have many of the same issues that prevents a N64 release for example. It would need a complete re-write of an emu and not a port to effectively support dynarec.

I figured picodrive works on psp without 32X support, so ps3 has to be a step up. Ah.. Yes. I keep hearing about ppc64 jit rewrite.
As for dynarec.. I'm guessing they can't hook retroarch through multiman's dynarec option unless that dynarec is useless..

Sure mame 0.78 is great for midway games / MK speed hacks but the other ports have ups and downs too. Compatibility wise.
Windows RA has a few mames in it right? So I don't see why the ps3 port shouldn't, even if they're left as is with nothing optimized.

I love that those two have menus and errors letting you know what roms you need just like FbaNext r490 that I still use.

Official cores are only going to be what is polished for that system. Also some cores simply will not even compile for the PS3, much less work. This was the case for mame 0.78 at one time. You could not get it to compile for the PS3.

The dynarec is there, and we have seen it work but on only an example PS1 emu. The emulators need a rewrite to support the dynarec. The dynarec there is one thing but you can just port and make it work with the dynarec thus emus needs alot of rewritting. Which no one has undertook yet.
