PS3 RetroArch v1.3 -- PlayStation 3 (PS3) DEX/CEX Version

RetroArch (PS3) v1.3 is officially here, it has been sometime ago since we seen an official update for RetroArch to hit the PS3, the previous official version was v1.0.0.2. While the community has seen some unofficial compiles in recent months, such as Ezio_PS with his compiles of v1.2.2. If you have used those unofficial releases you will see even more new things then what was in those recent compiles. There is alot of new eye-candy in this update as the emulator gets a new XMB MENU and is now the default User Interface, Also there is some new cores (emulated systems) that are present in this release [break]ss[/break], some of these additions we seen in the Unofficial Compiles of Ezio_PS and since have matured a bit and some new additions have been brought on as well. These details and more can be seen in the information provided by libretro.com and also psx-place.com.

There could be a quick release of v1.3.1, the release of the PS3 version has a bit of mystery attached to it, as the version was announced along with the other RetroArch v1.3 updates for other platforms. As all platforms expect for the PS3 version are hosted on the libretro.com website, but the PS3 version as in the past appears over at xbins.org. There is a release listing that is there for this version of RetroArch on the PS3, but it lacks the download link. One of Team Libretro developers huntrek stated that he thinks it was pulled for some last minutes fixes, but he is not the lead dev on the PS3 port and as we have tried to reach out on twitter and posted in the forums and seen the official announcement is not corrected... So, with that said and not alot of conformation we are unsure if this was pulled or the xbins FTP is where the desired download location was all along. I have tested this version a bit myself along with others and i will say its more stable then the recent unofficial compiles and adds some new features and cores. but its remains unknown at this time if this was pulled or just a sloppy release in the terms in how it was posted, not a sloppy product as the RetroArch team has really done some amazing stuff especially with this update..

So take a look at this release, as its something that is been hyped for a bit and promised for a long time to PS3 users. For CFW CEX user's there is no CEX version at this time, but if your a REBUG CFW user and on one of the latest builds of REX you can use DEX packages on CEX, without a convert to CEX

RetroArch (PS3) v1.3

What's New for RetroArch - PlayStation3 (PS3)
The PS3 version features some big changes. MaterialUI and XMB are both available now as menu drivers. The XMB menu driver is now enabled by default. Libretro database support is in, and things should generally work fine.

I released only the DEX version. PS3 sceners can take the DEX release and create a CEX version of it.

New Cores

  • prosystem_libretro -- Atari 7800
  • vecx_libretro --- Vectrex
  • mednafen_psx_libretro --- PlayStation 1
  • mednafen_pcfx_libretro -- NEC PCFX
  • mednafen_lynx_libretro - Atari Lynx
  • mednafen_gba_libretro - GameBoy Advance
  • handy_libretro - Atari Lynx
  • gw_libretro - Nintendo Game & Watch
  • 2048_libretro - 2048 Homebrew Game

Improved playlist support

  • Both PlayStation1 and PSP games can now be scanned. Once the games are scanned and identified inside the database, they are added to a system-specific playlist. This makes it easy and convenient for you to start these games by just going to the playlist and selecting them instead of having to go through the filesystem and manually select the file again.
Revamped user interface

  • There was a ton of criticism about version 1.2's user interface on mobile devices, like Android. We have decided to give it a makeover. It now resembles a Material Design user interface and some of the annoying display bugs were fixed on Android. It now also has tabs at the bottom which you can touch. This can quickly take you to the playlists and/or settings screen.
  • XMB has also received a makeover. A bunch of actions now have their own tabs inside the horizontal menu. For instance, you can now scan for content by going to the 'Add' tab and selecting a directory instead of having to navigate through a bunch of menus. The history list is also now on a separate tab, as is the settings themselves.
RetroArch/libretro's reach

  • We don't like to brag a lot and we don't like self posturing. Nevertheless, RetroArch and libretro is definitely starting to become omnipresent. Plenty of people have used it in some form or another without even being aware of its name or its existence. For instance, there have been plenty of projects unrelated to us or the team (like NewRetroArcade) which were actually just libretro frontends implementing the libretro API, and the popular Raspberry Pi distribution RetroPie for instance uses RetroArch for a lot of the videogame emulation it provides.
  • Not everything has gone according to plan. We had to do a very substantial rewrite this past year that has definitely been daunting and some of you noticed that things didn't progress as fast as we'd like but we are finally out of development hell again and ready to fire on all cylinders again. There will never again be another half a year delay in development due to endless rewrites.
What's next for RetroArch
  • RetroArch 1.4 (the next version) will bring RetroArch to two new platforms.

Looking at psx-place and in accordance with the passion PS3 users have in respect of RA, i'm feeling wrong to not share the CEX version of RA 1.3, so I'm just going to share it, anyway some annoying bugs and not working cores can happen (that's the reason why i didn't share it before). I guess people would like to take a look at new wonderful XMB gui, so here it's. https://www.sendspace.com/file/cxtvwr

So no one knows why retroarch would just blink and go back to the xmb or freeze

You're on Rebug 4.78.1 REX right? There should be no problem as CEX or DEX should work.
Maybe your downloads weren't complete. Try re-downloading. Also try a different usb flash.

Conflict in RetroArch.cfg file could be one reason. (but may not be the issue)

try deleting the retroarch.cfg file and boot again to see what happens. or just install a clean version.

Why is this uploaded(CEX version) to one of the slowest filehosting sites known to man? Sendspace is just terribly slow to download a file from. Could we please get some mirrors? Thanks!

No kidding about the slowness - 30+ minutes to download the ~180 MB CEX version to hard drive, but a ~350 MB file - same computer and network - 90 seconds. To a flash drive.

Update: After numerous reboots with the clean installation.. the retroarch xmb came up but every time i go to play a game It takes me back to the regular XMB.. and the retroarch xmb freezes when I go to the scan files option.(I am editiing this is because I am sure you have not read this yet) I went to the select file and detect core option and went to a file the whole PS3 froze.. So its safe to say this particular issue is a bug.. if the DEX is this bugged out I would dread to try the CEX version

Uninstall current and if you have previous version, disable cobra, and try install again.

DEX / CEX version does not matter (The release is buggy as hell)

The problem is with the development team putting the PS3 version on the back burning and really IMO not giving the PS3 audience a proper release. The hype for over a year, the releases since v1.0.0.2 that left out the PS3 version (with empty promises that a version would come soon). SO IMO i think its that much more important for them to AT VERY LEAST give us an update on this release. But seems we can't even get that, i been a supporter of this project since day one, back when it started on the PS3 and there was no other platforms. You know back before it was not even called RetroArch but SSNES.

I have to say i am very disappointed with this release and also the treatment of the PS3 audience. They now they want to add even more platforms. FFS before you add more i would say perhaps the better idea is to polish and maintain the ports you have NOT adding more and putting more of these platforms on ICE.. Because overall that is a black eye to the project as the project is deigned to support many platforms which it does, but if you support some those platforms HALF ASS then how the hell is this a good thing? Honestly i just see RetroArch supporting to many platforms then they can handle and it seems to just that. perhaps i am wrong and this is not to hate on Libretro, but to express my obverasations of a platform that has not got a fair shake lately compared to other platforms. Disappointed in v1.3 to say the least.

It's been that way since .9.9.7. Too many cores that emulate the same games. Too many ports to platforms that suck for gaming (iOS, phones, other touch devices). The GUI has always sucked, and now it crashes half the systems it's ported to.

It's all about squarepusher. He thinks he's the Hideo Kojima of retro emulation. All he does is talk about the API, and basically mocks any actual gamers who point out issues or problems with the ports. He hates the fans of his product.

I think they've prioritized other systems I think. at least there's still a ps3 version though. there's been no 360 version past 1.0.0.2.

edit: I tested games/cores on the vita through rejuvenate, and I didn't encounter the same issues people seemed to be having with the ps3 version.

you won't, either.

You have to post on the forum and wait for them to never answer you. Or, if you're lucky, they might quote your post, mock you for being impatient and unappreciative, and tell you all this is for free and go screw yourself if you don't like it.

thats exactly what just happened.. which is dumb because most of us would prefer a finished product that had to be delayed to get there than something that was half-assed just to shut us up, because it does the opposite

My comments where not to bash the team. I have alot of respect for what they have provided us (they spent alot of time on this project). However i would like to see a better approach on the PS3 port.

Some of what you mention is opinion based rather then fact dealing and while you are entitled to your opinion. Others may not agree... Squarepusher puts in tons of time into this project. If anything he takes on too much.. but only an outside observation, that could be wrong or right on.

Yea its isolated to the PS3 version, they have for sure prioritized other system, which can be expected.. Just need to give the PS3 port some focus rather then putting on the back burner as it seems to be the case. Also the releases of all platforms at the same time is a bad idea as well. but again that is my personal opinion. Just way too much feedback on some many ports at the same time.

the 3ds needs retroarch the most. based on my tests, u can only have 300 apps/games installed. if u install over that, games will be replaced. though, the cores r separated. the cores r separated with the vita as well, but with the 3ds, u can't change to another core from within a core. it's best with the gateway, 'cause u can just place all games on the internal sd card while having 3ds/3dz games on their own card.
