Roster FilesPS2

Hi everybody my first post so bare with me. Hope it's in the right section.
I have a Pal PS2 slim and have had a free McBoot on memory card for awhile.
I possess some NTSC sports game discs in this case NCAA Football. I play them on my NTSC fat PS2 console but have decided to pack that fat console away in the cupboard and therefore use free Mcboot on my Pal PS2 for better ease and to use OPL.
I have all my games running sweet so there's no serious issues there.
What I want to do is in the NCAA games there are no player roster names. So a player might be QB 12 instead of a player name. I have got some roster Files with names which are in PSU and Max format.
I've made up a VMC for the game by pressing triangle and making one. Now the Roster Files need to go on that but I can't get the game to load or recognise those files. I've gone to launch elf and put the PSU and Max file into the Mass VM folder but no joy.
Even put a proper memory card into slot 1 (McBoot in slot 2) but still no joy. I've copied and pasted both PSU paste, MCpaste and normal paste.
Even tried mounting vmc0 and vmc1. No joy. Tried memory card anihalator and no joy.
In OPL what is generic memory card instead of vmc card?
I just don't know what I'm doing and can't see the woods for the trees.
When the game loads it loads the settings and profile vmc file from the mass/vmc and in .bin format. I even changed the PSU & Max files to .bin but still the game won't do it
Any help a D advice would be great.
Thanks all and great to be here on the site.
