Slim 2501 updated online now bootloop

Hi, I am new to the PS3 adventure.

I bought a slim 2501. Seller said he didn't know it was jailbroken and he updated it and now it has the update screen when booting
The system software cannot be run correctly. Press the PS button to restart the system
If the system cannot be restarted, you must reinstall the system software
connect storage media that contains update data of version 4.88 or higher,etc

I read not to install OFW over CFW so I tried installing CFW 4.88.2 Evilnat Cobra 8.3 [CEX]

I get error 8002F2B5

I read this can happen if the PS3 is on DEX.

Any help is appreciated. Since I cannot boot the PS3 I am not sure what is installed.

Will formatting the HDD help?

What steps should I take to get this PS3 up and going again?

If it's on DEX, you should be able to install the latest Rebug 4.84.2 D-REX (not REX) pup file.
But if the console recovery is asking for 4.88 minimum, it is most likely on CEX 4.88.

If it is on CEX & you dunno if it's jailbroken, the easiest way to try Evilnat's 4.88.2 CFW first & if the installation errors out, just use OFW 4.88.

It does not matter if you lose jailbreak & end up with OFW after this reinstallation, you can always use the PS3 Toolset on ** ** www.ps3xploit.net > Domain no Longer owned by team** (NEW URL = http://ps3toolset.com) > Domain no Longer owned by team** (NEW URL = http://ps3toolset.com to exploit the console from OFW 4.88 & install a 4.88 CFW.
 
Thank you for the information. I installed OFW 4.88 and the system is up and running now. Time to learn how to do the exploits.
