PS3 Slim either A) shuts down (no light) before reaching XMB, or B) runs fine for hours. Root cause?

A little background on this 3001B model that I obtained recently, want to fix it up and give to my cousin:

I initially just though it was an issue with the stock hard drive , because I removed the HDD and the system was able to stay on (though basically in safe mode, which I later found works fine regardless of what's in the HDD bay).

Next I tried a random super old 30GB SSD I had laying around. That immediately fried when I turned on the PS3 (suspicious... but it is a very old drive, so who knows why that really happened).

Then I tried a brand new budget SSD (PNY CS900 240GB), and that's formatted just fine

But the green light--->no light problem at boot still remains. The only way I can reliably get to XMB is completely restart and reformat the system, starting from initial setup.

If I get past the XMB splash screen, I can leave the PS3 on all day. I'll let it loop the intro to Shadow of the Colossus, which is real time rendering, and it runs fine for hours.

Sometimes, rarely, I can get the PS3 to get back to the XMB from standby after this.

Based on what I've read up until this point, here are some possible root causes of the problem, in order of the difficulty of the corresponding solution:

1) Poor contact between heatsink and Cell or RSX, meaning a cold boot will have worse contact from less thermal expansion and thus overheat sooner? Possible solution being to repaste and tighten screws?

2) Problem with power supply. Solution being adjust some pots, replace some caps, or replace PSU outright?

3) Fried bluetooth/wifi module and/or the connected voltage regulator? Solution being to replace either one or both. I'm too new to post links but there's been some discussion

and at

4)Cold solder joints on CPU or RSX. Solution being to gift this unit to somebody who's masochistic enough to try a reball and just tell my cousin to buy another used PS3.

I'm curious to hear what you guys think. And appreciate any help you can offer
