PS3 Slim giving 3034 error when assembled but turning on WITHOUT PRESSURE when torn apart??

Hey all.

Months ago I had disassembled my PS3 Slim to change the thermal paste, and when I re-assembled it and turned it on it instantly turned fully off. While troubleshooting with the LED syscon code I found the error 3034, so my guess was that I had broken some solder balls and it needed a reballing.

(Another rookie mistake I had made was using a shitty thermal grease instead of a good paste. I doubt it's related but it's worth noting)

Today, after recovering from the depression that caused me, I came back to it to do the "pressure test" to confirm if reballing was the correct fix for it. To my surprise it turned on without pressing!

So what does this mean? This is very anti-intuitive to me, maybe 3034 was caused because of something else? Were the solder balls not the issue? Were my clamps too tight? I'm not sure what to get of this. I haven't reassembled my console yet because I don't wanna mess it up again without knowing what to do with it.

I'll appreciate your help.

I know RipFelix had a similar issue with his R2D2 Xbox 360 when trying to jailbreak it. Working when not in the case and broken when assembled. He confirmed it was a BGA fault by pressing on the board slightly while it was on which caused screen artifacts. You can find the video on his YT

Have you done any eraser/pressure mod? What is your model btw? What do you mean by "clamps"? Did you try a delid?

Pressure mod? I don't know what that is. Eraser mod? Hell no. I have a 25XX Slim. I'm calling clamps to the metal bars that tighten the board on the CELL and RSX, heard it around, probably not the right name for it. Haven't tried a delid, but I don't know how that would help exactly.

It probably will be the same thing as RipFelix, I have no doubt that this is a BGA problem as it only appeared when I reassembled it for the first time after changing thermal paste.

Now that you mentioned delidding, what is the exact purpose of it anyway? I recently mentioned it to a technician, and the first thing he said is "that would only make it run hotter. Have you seen the Super Slims? They don't have a lid and the RSX sometimes tends to melt". I know that not all processors have a lid, but why is it such a common thing to want to take it out on e.g. frankies?

(Forget about saving this shitty PS3 tho, the main reason I was diagnosing it is to sell it for repair with a good description for the problem. I bought it used with a very dirty never opened interior, a faulty BD drive, and for some reason the music between Apollo Save Tool and Artemis was swapped? Now after disassembling the flex for the front buttons is broken, and I've noticed some faults in the power supply too. This one is e-waste tbh)

Pressure and eraser mod is the same thing. I just prefer to use pressure instead of eraser when talking about it.

I was asking for the delid because you mentioned clamps and I though you meant the clamps that people use when reattaching the CPU lid with silicon. I wouldn't suggest it unless a console is overheating. It is supposed to help with temperatures by you replacing the thermal paste between the lid and the die. Like you would replace the one between the lid and the heat sink. If you choose to not put the lid back on that is on you. It was probably there for a reason.

I don't trust technicians and repair techs anymore since everytime I have asked for help they have given me wrong advice. Not saying you should too but my experience has always been bad. I have a Super Slim with me rn and it is running cold all the time. The Blu Ray drive makes more noise lol

Oh, thermal paste under the lid, of course. That explains it, thanks.

Yeah technicians at least in the PS3 realm are very "out of touch" for sure. I've seen one guy in marketplace selling a YLOD phat saying that he was told that "it needed thermal paste replacement". Sure bud.
