PS2 SMB vs USB on 77004?

After using MX4SIO (a MC2SIO, actually), now I'm thinking on getting a mini router to plug in the ETH port and play through SMB with a pendrive/hdd/whatever attached to it.

And after a lot of reading here and there, I've seen that some people claim that on latest 7xxxx slim models USB handling has been improved, specially using a Sandisk Ultra Fit 3.1, and some other people claim that using that USB model they're getting pretty decent results. On the other hand, I've read that the
Sandisk Ultra Fit 3.1 tends to heat a lot and it may be a risk for the PS2, and also games often freeze because of this.

So, what are your general impressions or experiences? My personal feeling is that a SMB mini router is better than the USB solution, and also the best for PS2 slim without HDD. Is this true? What about game compatibility (leaving aside the speed factor) between SMB and USB?

Thanks in advance!

USB: Slower speed, better compatibility
SMD: Faster speed, lower compatibility

Thanks for the info. What about the thing I've read about here and there? I mean the part that refers to the improving of USB handling (maybe a bit faster) on late 7xxxx models, specially with specific USB models.

The speed improvement is for all the consoles as far as I know.
Slim consoles has no improvements on the USB ports at all. They are still 1.1 USB ports.
The USB IRX drivers were updated in 2019, improving the overall reading speed, but limited to what 1.1 ports can handle.
Modern versions of exiting homebrews features these drivers.

I know they are all 1.1 on all consoles, I just thought I read something about newer models and different internal hardware slightly improving the USB reading, while still 1.1.

Still slower than SMB, but enough for a lot of games to run FMVs fluid!

Yes, it is that borderline...!

This is what I use:

TP-Link AC750 Wireless Portable Nano Travel Router(TL-WR902AC) - Support Multiple Modes, WiFi Router/Hotspot/Bridge/Range Extender/Access Point/Client Modes, Dual Band WiFi, 1 USB 2.0 Port https://a.co/d/4aZqcjw

Works really good, get some fmv stutter here and there but nothing major. Compatibility seems to be decent and games seem to run good.

'TL-WR902AC(v3)' is what I use. I am not sure if you have the same model, but mine (v3) works great as well. :)
get some fmv stutter here and there
Are you streaming your FMVs through WiFi? I haven't had that on a directly connected USB-Storage-device.

A "Dual Connection" (2.4GHz + 5GHz) between 2 OpenWRT-Devices should also work without stutters as a 'bridge'!

OPL SMB requires quite low latencies on the network, because it itself is already 'slow' when a game requests sectors.
