PS2 SMB vs USB on 77004?

I have this cheap one since years:

Ps2 USB (either FAT or SLIM) perfectly powers it with a a connected pendrive or a 2,5" USB HDD.
Never had any FMV stuttering issue using this directly connected to Ps2 (static IP).

I recently work on a project with Orange Pi Zero, that basically serve 2 things, 1 is connected via ethernet which only serve games that works fine via ETH and the rest is via USB.

Luckily Orange Pi Zero have a OTG port that can act either as a host or device mode, of course I took advantage the device mode of the usb and using the USB Gadget modules on linux kernel, PS2 can see Orange Pi Zero connected via USB in OTG port as a standard mass storage device, works great! All games are stored on a single 128GB uSD card, can be expanded with that single USB 2.0 port with a external HDD if you want.

I`m using old small pc (WIN XP 32bit) with PentiumIV 2.4 HT (underclocked to 1.2 Ghz), 2GB RAM and 3TB HDD for SMB (same console model) . Tried other methods before but this one is best for me.

Are you saying that you power up the mini router AND a 2,5" USB HDD only with ONE PS2 USB port?

I do, works pretty good too. I get some slight stutter now and then during fmv but not usually.

Your HDD is being underpowered and that WILL decrease its lifetime, as well as the lifetime of your PS2's USB possibly being affected.

Why is the lifetime of the PS2's USB port affected? Would using a pendrive make any difference against using and HDD? I guess it would need less power...

I use this kingston 16GB pendrive since many years: WP 20181223 00 22 20 Pro - YouTube

As I said i never experience any problem on the device I used (I also use them on PC for other things, especially the USB HDD), powering them connected to the mini-router to a single Ps2 USB.

However if you want to be sure you can buy an USB splitter and use both Ps2 USBs. However in this case I think you have to be sure about the cable specification/device power requirements, since you won't get any warning if the power is too much.

A related example, on Samsung LCD Tvs, there are usually 2 (or more) USB inputs, one is for pendrives and the other for HDDs. If you put the device on the wrong one it pops up on the tv screen the warning that the device is being supercharged.

I want to have the mini router and USB powered up only by the PS2 port, and I already have a USB with apps on the first USB port, but now I'm afraid of affecting the lifetime of the ports :S

"father" of all such boxes - TP-Link TL-WR703N - eats up to ~0.185A at boot and up to ~0.1A average without USB device attached.

Would that one work smoothly? It only has 32MB of RAM... How much power will it take with a pendrive attached?

Because of this post I've decided to power my router/HDD with a phone charger but going to add an on/off switch so I don't have to plug and unplug. Wonder if my FMV stuttering sometimes was because not enough power to the hard drive? I'll do some testing tonight

Great, please post your results!

I played a few games and didn't experience any FMV stutter at all. I could definitely see the HDD not getting enough power and that being the problem, never realized it. I thought the Ethernet/Router/HDD would be fast enough to not have any lag but figured I was overlooking a bottleneck somewhere. Appreciate the information. I'll do more testing but I think that solved the minor issues I had with that setup.

Got this today to go between the wall adapter and the router since it doesn't have an on/off.

I'm seriously considering using a mini router for the SMB option. But now that I think of it, if external power supply is the best option, once I turn off my PS2, the router and USB/HDD will stay awake. How could I turn them off without just unplugging them? I mean, the USB/HDD would still be mounted and the filesystem could corrupt.

Thanks!

That's why I bought the on/off switch, saves me from having to unplug from the outlet each time.
