I was thinking, if I power my mini router only with the PS2 USB, would a pendrive on the mini router be powered as well? Would there be enough energy?Yes, but I usually still use an external power supply.

I have this cheap one since years:

Ps2 USB (either FAT or SLIM) perfectly powers it with a a connected pendrive or a 2,5" USB HDD.
Never had any FMV stuttering issue using this directly connected to Ps2 (static IP).
Are you saying that you power up the mini router AND a 2,5" USB HDD only with ONE PS2 USB port?
Your HDD is being underpowered and that WILL decrease its lifetime, as well as the lifetime of your PS2's USB possibly being affected.

"father" of all such boxes - TP-Link TL-WR703N - eats up to ~0.185A at boot and up to ~0.1A average without USB device attached.

Because of this post I've decided to power my router/HDD with a phone charger but going to add an on/off switch so I don't have to plug and unplug. Wonder if my FMV stuttering sometimes was because not enough power to the hard drive? I'll do some testing tonight

Got this today to go between the wall adapter and the router since it doesn't have an on/off.![]()

That's why I bought the on/off switch, saves me from having to unplug from the outlet each time.I'm seriously considering using a mini router for the SMB option. But now that I think of it, if external power supply is the best option, once I turn off my PS2, the router and USB/HDD will stay awake. How could I turn them off without just unplugging them? I mean, the USB/HDD would still be mounted and the filesystem could corrupt.
Thanks!
