Not really. If you can still access your account then you're probably good. Bans are usually immediate.
In the first place, 99% of all bans are due to people cheating online or syncing fake trophies. In other words, most people who get banned deserve it.
Still, just to be on the safe side, it would be a good idea to make a full backup of your purchases at this point so should your account ever be banned you won't lose anything you paid for. To do that, go to the PS3 store and re-download every game you've ever purchased. Then, disconnect from PSN and copy the entire /dev_hdd0/game directory to your computer using a USB disk or FTP, and also install Apollo Save Tool and use it to export licenses to RAP files, and copy those to your computer as well.

Highly unlikely you're going to be banned. I don't know if it's still possible, but one thing is not opening homebrew while online. Other than that or what @NiQ said, you'd really have to go out of your way to get banned. However, a rule of thumb is not to use your main account with online stuff. I personally have thousands of dollars invested on the PS3, 4, and 5, so I won't even hack my consoles, even if the chance of being banned is very low these days. Just don't use your main account, and you won't be risking much.

Does Sony still have a department for such things? I doubt they care at all.

Microsoft on the other hand still suspends my accounts for using VPN and other reasons, since they are still supporting X360 games through backwards compatibility.

Microsoft banned VPNs because people were using them to gain access to the Xbox Live store of other regions and potentially get games for a lot cheaper than it costs in their own. Seems that Sony is a lot less rigid in that aspect - even now you can create a Japanese PSN account, load it with a JP gift card you buy online and download JP stuff without even using a VPN at all.
But yeah, when it comes to mods Microsoft is also a lot more thorough - The Xbox 360 sends some sort of fingerprint of the local environment when it logs in and Microsoft uses that to detect whether the console is modded and instantly bans it. That's why you need to use a stealth server to fake a retail system, and you need to use an online service that gets keeps up with the dashboard updates, though I'm pretty sure that's going to be irrelevant soon since the store shut down a few days ago and I doubt matchmaking will survive much longer.
The PS3 never sends any information to PSN that could indicate whether or not it's modded (though a few games do). Almost all bans are not outright because your PS3 is modded, but rather because you used your modded PS3 to cheat or fake your stats.

Microsoft seems to be less stingy about that now, because I got ikaruga for free from a different region on the series x. I was able to download it fine without using a vpn or anything, which obviously is a good thing. :D
