Some games don't work in ISO format, so I converted them to folders. My PS3 cannot see them, though!

Hello all! I have a launch fat Evilnat 4.88 PS3 with a 5tb exFAT drive plugged into the 3rd USB port. Most of my PS3 ISOs work just fine. However, I had the following issues with the following games:

  1. Back to the Future The Game [BLES01596] - Game gets stuck at initial loading screen with the flux capacitor
  2. Tales from the Borderlands [BLUS31586] - Black screen when trying to load
  3. Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag [BLUS31483] - Game goes right back to XMB after launching
  4. DEF JAM ICON [BLUS30024] - Stuck at EA logo at the beginning
  5. Doom 3 BFG Edition [BLUS31024].iso - Doom 2 does not load
  6. Grand Theft Auto Episodes from Liberty City [BLUS30524] - loading the game hard-locks the system
  7. Grand Theft Auto IV Complete Edition [BLUS30682] - Selecting any of the side missions like Ballad of Gay Tony crashes the PS3
  8. Just Cause 2 [BLUS30400] - Does not get past the splash screen
  9. Max Payne 3 [BLUS30557] - Never loads
  10. Midnight Club Los Angeles [BLUS30442] - Game goes right back to XMB after launching
  11. Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition [BLES01132] - error 80010006
  12. Prince of Persia [BLUS30214] - Game goes right back to XMB after launching
  13. Silent Hill Downpour [BLUS30565] - When you go to install the update, the system beeps and shuts down
  14. Silent Hill HD Collection [BLUS30810] - When you go to play the game, the system beeps and shuts down
  15. Test Drive Unlimited 2 [BLUS30527] - When you try to update it dumps you back to the XMB
  16. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Trilogy HD [BLUS30761] - Install screen never gets past 53%
  17. Tomb Raider [BLUS31036] - Black screen when trying to load the game
  18. YAKUZA Dead Souls [BLUS30826] - Black screen when trying to load the game
Anyway this isn't as bad as it seems because I have about 340 ISOs, so it's a small percentage that doesn't work.

So what I did was I took the ISOs and used PS3 ISO TOOLS V2.2 and converted them to folder format. I put all of those games and dumped them to the external drive's \GAMES\ folder.

However, after doing that, none of the games in the \GAMES\ folder show up. Does anyone know why? I re-ran PrepISO in MultiMan and refreshed the xmb data, so it's not that.

Does anyone know what could be wrong? Why aren't my folder format games showing up for me?

What did you use to rip the discs? Did you convert the folders to ISO or rip directly to ISO? If not, what software did you use to convert to ISO?

ISO is by far the most compatible format for PS3 backups; I've had no issue with any of my games backed up to ISO, using makeps3iso with PS3 ISO Tools.

Games in "folder" format only work on external drives formatted with FAT32 MBR.
They also work on internal HDD or using remote ps3netsrv.

Games stored on exFAT and NTFS are only supported in ISO format.

prepISO also supports single files like movies, music, packages or themes. prepISO converts them to "fake ISO" containing a single file.

I recommend to use 2 partitions (FAT32 + NTFS or FAT32 + exFAT).
exFAT support is relatively new,and only a few backup managers support that storage.

For sure, usually here, if it doesn't work in folder format, it's ok in iso format! no more chance with folder format.
Check if your iso is not slightly corrupted or re-dump them and check to be sure they are well done.
If your (good) iso fails, generally playing smartly with parameters from your iso loader should help.

- Black Flag ISO is missing the empty ASSASSIN_ISO folder.
- Splinter Cell Trilogy ISO is missing Thumbs.db files.

Other games on this list may be missing empty folders and/or windows system files that are ignored when building an ISO on PC. Re-dumping your games with Irisman or MGZ as ISOs should (in theory) fix most of your issues (not sure how multiman handles dumping since it's closed source, so I can't vouch for it).

FYI: I posted a list of all(?) US PS3 dics which have empty folders. You may wish to look at it for reference. I'll post a list of all games with Thumbs.db files later tonight.

Edit: Posted that thumbs.db list I promised.

I had the same issue with Silent hill downpour. I mounted the game using multiman, then exited multiman and on the disc that appeared on the games menu I pressed triangle and then check for updates. The system downloaded the update and installed it. When I run the game the black screen requesting the update didn't load and instead the game played normally.

actually i have some games in iso format (splitiso) due to the fat32 limitation to 4gb file size and those goes really good, i actually have from this list silent hill HD and yakuza dead souls those are working fine to me and also on silent hill hd i have the latest update installed and both sh2 and sh3 they do go really good with no issues on my cfw slim, also there are other games that i test that those are bayonetta, naruto ultimate storm and tmnt turtles in manhattan that those i have them on folder jb format due tp that in iso format those does not load
