PS3 Superslim can see wifi but can't connect

A friend has a Superslim PS3 that can see his wifi (scans and finds SSID) but when we try and connect to it, it fails saying the password may be wrong. We know the password is correct because it's the default one written on the router, and our phones and other computers all connect properly to this same wifi.

The router is the same model/brand as the one I have at my house, and the config is the same. My PS3 Slim connects to my wifi easily. (Have not tried taking my PS3 to his house and connecting to his wifi yet)

Just wondering if anyone had suggestions, (maybe a way to reset his config) to get it working? Don't want to wipe out his HD as he doesn't want to lose his progress in Tiger Wood's 12 golf, and that game doesn't seem to let you backup progress.

His superslim is on the previous firmware (4.8.2 I think - not 4.9) and not jailbroken.

Then it's the WiFi's WPA. Maybe it is using something different than WPA/WPA2 and the PS3 can't handle it.

To rule out if the network chip is dead on the console, try connecting to the router using an ethernet cable (just to isolate the issue).

Well according to the config page on the router it is using WPA/WPA2.

Yeah. It's in a different room, but it would be a good test.

Actually, he just rang me and is having troubles with his controller when in wireless mode now. Maybe the console is sick. It is under a 90 day warranty, so maybe we should take it back.

If his controller is having syncing problems, then it's quiet possible that the BT/WiFi module is dying (BT and WiFi are both integrated on the same chip). That would make sense with the reported issue. Just to be safe, don't let your friend update the console FW or it will be in an infinite loop.

The only "fix" possible is to change the module with a new or working one, but that requires soldering skills and tools. There are some electronic shops that do this kind iof repairs, but it really depends on your country and living area.

Better option is to find a new PS3 and start migrating all the games and savefiles.

Well, we got a second one from the shop. The replacement was worse than the first one. On first start it reported a corrupt file system, and was never able to recover past about 40%. Maybe the Superslims are getting a bit unreliable.

Anyway, he's given up, got his money back :(

The problem with SuperSlims is that some of them have that internal, unreplaceable eMMC flash memory that can not be fixed.

But, supposing that your friend's second unit had a HDD, maybe it was only a matter of changing it. HDDs tend to fail over time and use, even more if they are as old as the PS3 manufacture date.

I know of this issue it has something to do with your wifi chip(hardware) if you are skilled enough or give it to someone to change the bluethoot/wifi module then everything will work fine.

Sorry, it has been returned to the store where it was purchased, for a refund.

I did not know some had eMMC. Anyway, as above, it has been returned.
