PS2 The Future of the PlayStation 2 Internal Hard Drive by Berion

The Future of the PlayStation 2 Internal Hard Drive
.[/hr]We have recently started 2023, and the so-called PlayStation 2 console scene is surprisingly still doing well, yes, even better than ever before and better than on not one newer platform! And one of the leading projects that anyone interested can mention without a long moment's hesitation is Open PS2 Loader - the successor to HDLoader and USB Advance, a program used to run games from USB, i.Link (FireWire), MX4SIO (a reader for e.g. SDXC in the Memory Card slot), the local network and the internal hard drive, whose operation is still stuck in the darkness of the Middle Ages. ;)

Before I get into specifics, it's worth recalling what the current, extremely exotic logical disk structure that Sony designed looks like, and which is supported by every software written to date that supports the internal hard drive. Without understanding the APA, you won't understand the idea of a hybrid drive. It is only later that I will discuss the concept of building a Frankenstein with something modern, familiar, while providing a full or residual layer of compatibility.

I recently installed a daily build version of OPL, now I can see not only PS2 games I put on the HDD, but also PS1 games as well. I also pulled all the meta data (box art, back cover, etc) to make it look pretty neat. I just learned there is an open-source Super Nintendo emulator on the market now (snesticle). Hopefully some good hackers will jump in on this and tweak it around. I use Snes Station and not all games are supported. Too bad no one has been able to port Bsnes which has 100% compatibility.

That's technically a fork from Jay-Jay over at ps2home. I have mixed feelings about it. I like the PS1 popstation functionality, but it's also already a year behind the official OPL release and it doesn't look like that feature will get merged into the main project.

So we either have a choice between the latest and greatest or an outdated fork with better PS1 compatibility. I wish there wasn't so much tension behind the scenes between the authors of the projects.
