These FTP problems are starting to make me wanna rip my hair out

I had FTP working just fine with 4.81 rebug and ethernet for about a day then it stopped working after a session of playing games over the network using ps3netserv. I'm not sure if that is a coincidence or something I did while streaming messed up ftp.

I've since changed to 4.82 overflow to try and fix it. I've tried both ethernet and wireless. I've tried custom ip settings like 223.0.0.0 for ps3 and 223.0.0.1 for my pc (this is how I had it working before), as well as wireless only and also more "normal" ip settings in the 191.168 range. I've tried using alternate ftp like multiman, same shit. I have tried adjusting some filezilla settings, like I found a guide that recommends active mode instead of passive.

When I try and connect the best I can get is "connection established, waiting for welcome message" and then it just times out. I ran the filezilla wizard and it gives an error but that is when its connecting to something on the internet which I don't even need to work for this so I'm not sure if it is pertinent or not. The error that wizard gives me is "wrong external ip address" if I use all the auto/recommended settings, or "failed to create listen socket on port 0" & sometimes "NoGo #, #, #, #, #, #" (with the first 4 # being my external IP) depending on what settings I choose. I looked up this latter error and it was suggested on filezilla forum that a router or firewall is interfering. Well I have my windows firewall off and the settings on my router as low as possible, it doesn't have an OFF setting but I have it on Minimal which says it accepts both inbound and outbound connections.

Also, most of my testing was done with the ethernet connected directly from pc to ps3 so those router/firewall/filezilla wizard things probably aren't very relevant to whatever is happening here.

I recommend having your router handle DHCP instead of doing a straight PC to PS3 connection. Have you tried other FTP programs on the PS3? I personally use webMAN-MOD's built-in FTP server with little issues on REBUG 4.81.2

Just webman and multiman, downloaded blackboxftp for ps3 but it wouldn't start. I had it working with ethernet straight from pc to ps3 using 4.81 rebug but it stopped working after about a day, right after a session of streaming games with ps3netserv.

Try using Rebug toolbox for FTP, most other functions are only for Rebug, but FTP works with any CFW. Once the toolbox is open the FTP is active.

F%$# it I'm just going to go back to rebug, since that was the last cfw that ftp worked on... installing overflow Dualboot atm so I can put rebug over it. Wasn't able to go straight from overflow v4 to rebug even with QA flag on for some reason.

What is another ftp pkg I can put on the ps3? I can't find a current blackbox that works.
Like I said rebug toolbox will work for ftp on other CFW. or use webman if your FW is cobra.

Do you know how webman plugin works? you need to have the sprx installed on your hdd, and the path in your boot_plugins.txt file.

what happened when trying to install rebug over overflow v4? corrupt data? install failure at a certain percentage? no applicable data found? it could be update protection. rebug does this. in the recovery men on rebug, for example, they've changed the update location for bd from ps3/update to not/update. maybe the same thing is happeneing here? the best way to protect from accidental updates is to rename the update locations. dashlaunch on the 360 does this. updates should be $SystemUpdate on the 360. however, dashlaunch can make $$ystemUpdate the new update location. you can change the name of an official update to $$ystemUpdate if need. :-P.

I wasn't able to put rebug on with overflow cfw, had to switch to ferrox first then it worked. Now back on rebug and ftp is working again!

Solved below.

Background: I also could not connect, regardless of client or OS (windows or MacOS). Barebones command-line ftp in Windows to the PS3, i.e. ftp 192.168.1.x did not connect.

What worked: There were conflicting settings. The webMAN Mod setting (accessed through webMAN Games --> webMAN Setup) to allow ftp connections was conflicting with both MultiMan and Rebug Toolbox. Once this ftp option was clicked off, and Rebug Toolbox was restarted, all was fine.

My initial goal was to have the ftp service run in the background, so that another game / application (Netflix, for example) could be run with FTP going in the background. I was not successful.

rebug toolbox is fastest but if you want all time access dont run it...just turn webmans ftp back on and try changing username in fillezilla (or whatever) to ftpd12345

EDIT:
or what pinky said...both will work all the time

OK, so revisited webMan, since the background FTP is really welcome, but mainly because I wanted to transfer files from a PC program's installer DVD disk to my computer (which doesn't have a DVD player), and since Rebug Toolbox's ftp didn't work with my data disk.

I was able to get webMAN to work, by first disabling USER mode, and then re-enabling ADMIN mode. It won't work on PS3 restart, and I have to do this all over again. That sucks.
