Tools for re-PKG-ing PS3 game files?

I've found a tool that lets me extract the contents of a PSN Store PKG file (PSN.PKG.Decryptor.&.Extractor.v1.85-LMAN), but I'm wondering if there are any tools for re-packing the files back into an installable PKG.

I've used the CFW2OFW Helper to turn some of my disc games into PKGs, but that process has known limitations (e.g. game update requirement), and from what I can tell the tool also does not support re-packing a PSN game.

While I would be interested in re-packing a PKG to make an installable modded game, my current goal is a little more mundane: as has been documented, Lollipop Chainsaw does not work with the CFW2OFW tool, so I can't just turn my disc game into an installed PKG. However, there is a JP PSN release of the game, and I've dumped the contents of its PKG with the extractor tool mentioned above.

So what I'm wondering now is if I can make a modded/edited copy of the game that contains the game files from my EN disc (so it loads in English and has menus I can read). If there is a technical reason that this would be impossible, I'd certainly appreciate the information. But if it might be doable, I'd like to continue trying.

[I am on a fat PS3 with the latest (I think) 4.90 CFW.]

Well, when you install digital PKG files, they are extracted into /dev_hdd0/game/[pkg_id]. You could just install the JP PKG and then manually replace the game asset files in that directory. Whether it'll work or not it up to anyone's guess.

on a side note, I have seen a "pkg version" of Lollipop Chainsaw... I think it was made on a russian forum, using the game's Euro edition.

I can't say how they made it, if they hacked/replaced files... but I know it worked and you could play the game with no issues.

Doing a full file replace caused the game to not boot at all (with an error 80029530), but restoring the original EBOOT file from the JP PKG allowed it to at least start up. I got the initial chainsaw loading animation, but then a system message popped up (in English) to let me know that the game was corrupted and would need to be removed and reinstalled. If only I could run it in a debugger with breaks.

I'm guessing some kind of file integrity check might be the culprit, and I did try fiddling with the TOC files, but no joy, unfortunately. Thanks again for the idea, though. I still enjoyed playing with it to see what would/wouldn't happen. Still not done messing with it.

I'm not sure (haven't tried it) but maybe you'll be able to debug it with ProDG (assuming you like PPC assembly).
