PS3 using SATA-I and even unnecessary encrypted (because everything else is secured anyway and fs access would not help in any hacks (because images, videos, p3t can be imported from USB, and there is www access via web browser - so putting anything on HDD outside PS3 is pointless in the first place)), so they don't much care about efficiency. Probably they thinking that ~50MiB/s in write is fine.
