PS3 [Tutorial] (Read Warning) Installing Red Ribbon Linux on Rebug 4.81.2 - 4.84.2 D / REX

Hey! Just want to say thanks for the tutorial, and the help. I managed to downgrade it and install red ribbon.

I do have another question, have you or anyone managed to install java on RR? I've been trying but can't seem to find the way, do you have any pointers?

Cheers!
No problem, happy to help :)

But in terms of Java, I haven't unfortunately used it at all on a PS3, I think the architecture of the PS3 is PowerPC or PPC for short. You could try looking for java packages for that architecture if that helps. If you can't find anything I'll try having a look myself in the morning.

Works on 4.85? Cuz I tried to use it but no succesfully results, after install petitboot, I select boot OtherOS and the console just reboots normally to GameOS, no bootloader loaded

Are you using 4.85.1 Lite Rebug? It should work regardless what version as long as it's Rebug. Make sure you resized the flash before attempting to install petitboot, and make sure you are installing the correct version of it, NAND or NOR depending on what console variation you have.

And if you want to install RR directly onto the system itself, you have to downgrade to the versions provided in this tutorial, go through the steps one by one and after it's successfully installed, you can upgrade back to whatever version you desire.

I'm on 4.85 Rebug, and yes i resized flash before, i'm using NOR which is for my console CECH 2504A andi don't wanna install RR just boot in live

It should work then, i see no reason for it to not work properly. Personally, i've never used 4.85 or a "Lite" version of Rebug so that could be the cause of it. You could try downgrading to 4.84.2 REX Rebug and then attempt resize flash and install petitboot again.

Tried to go back but get an error on XMB, and if i try to downgrade via recovery mode it asks for min 4.85, but QA Flags enabled so I should be able to downgrade without extra step (?)

If QA flags are enabled, then it shouldn't say a minimum of 4.85, it being a slim like mine, should have a minimum FW version of at least 3.40 when the QA flag is enabled, but no, if it says 4.85 then you can't downgrade. Try disabling, restarting and then re-enabling QA Flagging.

I did it now, and still same, even intalledd the qa flag toggle pkg and seems like i can't enable qa flags, becaus that pkg should make 2-3 beeps sound on my ps3 if it enabled it succesfull, but it doesn't , so idk what else to do

Only other thing i can think of is make sure "Skip all ACL Checks" is enabled in the Rebug Toolbox under LV1 Patches as its needed in order to boot OtherOS.

ye that's enabled, so basically QA Flags not working ( no possible to downgrade) and OtherOS still not working

If i try to downgrade from XMB , after reboot into update system it will throw 8002F169 error, if i do it from recovery it asks 4.85 or higher

I honestly don't know why neither QA or OtherOS is functioning properly, i've never encountered or seen anyone with this problem before. Only other thing i can think of is wait until a REX or D-REX version of Rebug is released for 4.85, if that ever happens.

Hey!

Just wanted to say that I managed to install it by downloading from here https://developer.ibm.com/javasdk/downloads/sdk8/ the "simple unzip with license" ones.

Thanks again for all the help.

Hello DazzaXx! We spoke a while back you tried to help me get passed the issues I faced , then I stopped because it wouldn't do anything when I type ./create_hdd_region.sh . So I gave up for a while... now I've converted to dex hoping it would work and it kinda did but it wouldn't install, the automatic partitioning won't work so I tried current partition and when it reaches 100% I get the message "setup system failed, setup cannot continue " might you be able to help?

Is there any message displayed when you select Automatic Partitioning?

Yes, it says " warning: the resulting partition is not properly aligned for best performance".
Thats fine, happens to me too, simply press Automatic Partitioning, After it's said the warning message, choose "Use Current Partitions" and it should work.

I just tried it, it didn't work :/ I'm gonna format the hdd on windows and reinstall dex and try again.

Are you sure you installed the patched firmware i included, then selected "Restore PS3 System" in Safe Mode? The only reason i can think of why it's not working, is because the "create_hdd_region.sh" looks for a section of the hard drive that is allocated for OtherOS++ and creates the necessary partitions in order for it to work, and if it fails, means there's no allocated space reserved for OtherOS++.

EDIT: A way to tell if it is, is to note down how much space is available on you HDD in System Settings, and THEN installing the patched firmware included, Restore PS3 System and then check Storage Space again. If it's gone down by 20GB then you know its working right.
