PS3 [Tutorial] (Read Warning) Installing Red Ribbon Linux on Rebug 4.81.2 - 4.84.2 D / REX

Are you sure you installed the patched firmware i included, then selected "Restore PS3 System" in Safe Mode? The only reason i can think of why it's not working, is because the "create_hdd_region.sh" looks for a section of the hard drive that is allocated for OtherOS++ and creates the necessary partitions in order for it to work, and if it fails, means there's no allocated space reserved for OtherOS++.

EDIT: A way to tell if it is, is to note down how much space is available on you HDD in System Settings, and THEN installing the patched firmware included, Restore PS3 System and then check Storage Space again. If it's gone down by 20GB then you know its working right.
Yes I noticed that when I thought it would be OK to not format from the recovery mode since I was formating it from Windows causing it to reformat when i reinsert the hdd in the ps3, if I didn't format in recovery mode even on a formated hdd the size would remain at 263gb so I kept following the instructions you've provided to windup at 243gb .
I reformated and tried again but it would still show that same message.
PS:I don't know if this information is relevant, I currently have no blu-ray drive in my ps3. Might this be an issue for the installation?

Most likely, having no Blu-Ray Drive means having special firmware that ignores one not being there, and if you attempt to install standard unpatched CFW without the noBD patches, it will fail to boot.

EDIT: It could also be interferring with the Linux installation, but as i've never had nor owned a system without a Blu-Ray drive, i can't say for certain if that is the problem.

Ohh then I'm gonna wait till its fixed and try again. Many thanks DazzaXx!!

Hi, can anyone help me answer these questions, recommend a way to go...

1. Is it possible to update to latest OFW 4.85 then install CFW before installing RR Linux with this process?... Will it still work if PS3 fully updated and then the latest Rebug or other CFW installed?

Also,

2. Is it possible to update to latest OFW then install CFW and install the dual boot/OFW hack for using original discs together with RR Linux installed?....

I currently have a Rebug REX CFW installed on a OFW 4.8.4 Slim PS3 working fine as my main PSX box.

I also have another PS3 on OFW 4.8.2. with a 1TB HDD and looking to test what the most features can be packed into the box at the same time. Anyone know of detailed examples of this having been done already?

Any suggestions or recommendations would be much appreciated...

Many thanks in advance... ;J

Blu-ray drive fixed it just neended new cables, but unfortunately it's still not working :s. I've tried twice on dex and then I converted back to cex and tried twice and it still wouldn't work. I'm very thankful for your patience with me. I'm pretty sure it's some noob mistake on my part or there's something wrong with my ps either way many thanks for trying!

You might as well install the HFW so you can install CFW as long as it's a compatible system. And if you mean can you upgrade to any CFW version once Linux is installed then yes, you can. But you need to follow the tutorial exactly or else things won't go correctly.

Personally i wouldn't know as i've never dualbooted, so someone with more experience with that sort of thing would better help you with that question.

You still getting the same errors?

Hello DazzaXx,yes I got the same message and I also noticed that when I had the blu-ray drive out the cd indicator would be on so I would press the button so it would turn off but I didn't give it much thought till I reconnected the blu-ray drive and it would still be on every if there's no cd in it but works fine when I insert a cd.

Hi @dazzaXx, thanks for your help... I found a thread and link to a 4.83 Dualboot FW by @littlebalup from a while back so I've asked for more help and advice about it there: ( https://www.psx-place.com/threads/4...ls-updated-for-4-83.20957/page-18#post-230564 )

I'd like to install RR Linux already but would be great to know if this dualboot can be done or if it can be easily added later without reformatting / restarting the whole process??

Thanks ;J

So i did a little reading about Dualboot Firmware, found a 4.84 version and from what i've learned, its designed for people who don't want to risk going online with CFW and install that to do so and once they're done online, reinstall CFW the get the features of it back.

From what i know, installing firmware wipes flash but i don't think it touches petitboot so it should be fine. Even if it did wipe all flash including petitboot, you could simply resize the flash again and reinstall petitboot. Dualboot firmware doesn't touch the HDD so your Linux installation would still be there when you switch between Dualboot and CFW.

EDIT: What i would suggest doing is, going through this tutorial as normal, using the firmware included. Once it's done and installed on your HDD, update to stock 4.84 Rebug CEX or DEX (Your preference which one you use) and then, use Dualboot whenever you wanna go online.

Hi, thanks for your all your help and info both recently and going back historically so far...

I have a couple of more questions for you if you don't mind and have the time to spare...?...

So here's a quick update of what I've done so far and the questions to follow:
___________________________________________________________________
I updated from OFW 4.82 - > OFW 4.85
- I wanted to test the PS3 worked fully online and no ban etc. No problems.

I then updated to HFW 4.85.1 and attempted to update to both CEX then DEX versions in your install tutorial guide. Both attempts failed with the following errors :

CEX = The data is corrupted (8002F169) then with DEX = The data is corrupted (80029CCA)

So, I realised that was a dumb idea.... because it's OFW/HFW 4.85.1 so I needed to install a CFW with the QA Flag enabler to allow for downgrading to an earlier CFW.

So, I installed REBUG LITE 4.85.1 installed the REBUG TOOLBOX and enabled the QA Flag so that now I can downgrade and install the CEX or DEX version in STEP 2 of your install guide / tutoria
l.
_________________________________________________________________

Q1. Is all that right and assuming it makes sense..... Now do I need to start with the CEX version instead of DEX as per STEP 2 ?... - I have no need for DEX Debugging at the moment.

Q2. Do I need COBRA enabled and what other settings should I set apart from enabling QA Flag to be able to downgrade properly?

Q3. Also, I still want to do the Dualboot but am I right that it can only be used with OFW 4.84 PS3 unless you downgrade from 4.85 with an E3 Flasher?.. - I can add DB on my main 4.84 system later after finishing and testing RR Linux. Thanks again for the info and link!

Q4. I had assumed that to fully test a new PS3(2nd hand) I would have to update to go on PSN and login etc. to see if everything worked ok..... However, if I didn't update how would I best be able to test for problems or a ban and then use 4.84 Dualboot and a CFW and still be able to login and install PSN apps and games properly and easily without an update message or an easy quick ban?..

Q5. Do you have any advice or best recommendations on the best way to set this up or where to find more detailed information of the best different options for logging in to PSN / Installing apps / downloads / Online gaming and all without getting an easy ban? -I'm a bit clueless with CFW and online gaming / PSN access etc. :P

I appreciate your help so I hope this is not too many questions..?

Thanks again in advance... ;J

Yes all that is correct, i should've stated the whole QA Flagging thing when using the HFW, especially if downgrading afterwards.. my bad but i'm glad you figured that out :)

And if you have no need for DEX, download both the original package i have linked as well as the one for CEX users and use the "REX" .pup update file instead of the one that says "D-REX".

Q2. Do I need COBRA enabled and what other settings should I set apart from enabling QA Flag to be able to downgrade properly?
Cobra is not needed in order to successfully downgrade, all that is is a payload to enable backwards compatibility for games for the PS2, PSP, PSX, etc. on consoles that didn't orignally natively support it, as well as other features. Other than that, QA Flagging should work just fine.

The dualboot firmware is esentially "OFW", you wouldn't need to install OFW of any sort, all that is different from OFW and Dualboot firmware is that "Patched isoldr and spu_pkg_rvk_verifier to disable ecdsa protections allowing to install CFW 4.84 and above over it.", meaning you can reinstall CFW over it and it'll work fine without needing a flasher of any kind. As for online using the dualboot firmware, it might be possible but considering 4.85 is out, you might have to wait for a 4.85 version of a dualboot firmware to come out or else the system will just tell you to update when attempting to connect to PSN.

Q4. I had assumed that to fully test a new PS3(2nd hand) I would have to update to go on PSN and login etc. to see if everything worked ok..... As far as i know, there's no other way to find out if the system's CID is banned or not, assuming the previous owner never installed CFW of any kind and got it detected by doing something stupid, it should be fine.

This is where my knowledge is decent, from a personal view, my own system runs 4.84.2 DEX Rebug all the time even when i go online to play games, i've had the console almost 3 years now running Rebug and going online with it and not once have i gotten system banned (yet), now i'm not saying that going online with CFW is 100% safe, it isn't, but if you're smart about it, $ony won't even notice your running it.

What i use to go online is PSNPatch, this tool masks your system and disables CFW Syscalls to hide the fact your running CFW and makes it seem that its all legit OFW, and even prevents you from going online without pressing a certain button combo OR running homebrew when online AFTER the button combo has been pressed. Once the system is turned off or reset though, the CFW Syscalls are re-enabled so you can use it fully again with online re-disabled until the button combo is pressed again.

The choice is up to you, but if you cannot be bothered to have to switch all the time between firmwares just to go online, that's the way to go. As i said, there's always a risk, but if you're smart and use PSNPatch, they can't really tell.

EDIT:

I appreciate your help so I hope this is not too many questions..?

Thanks again in advance... ;J

No problem, i'm happy to help anyone with questions, it's what i'm here for :-p

EDIT 2: Link to PSNPatch

EDIT 3: I should've noted as well, if you do plan to use the CEX version of Rebug and also want to go online, you will have to use the Lite 4.85.1 thats out, because if you decide to stick with 4.84, it wont let you go online. This is one of the main reasons why i use DEX, you don't need to be on the latest version to go online with it. You could use SEN Enabler to spoof your firmware version, but most people advise against that method.

Hmm, i haven't ever encountered this error before. Are you sure you followed each step exactly and that the .iso extracted correctly on your USB?

Hello,

I wanted to let you know that the issue is solved, now Red Ribbon is running on my PS3. What I did: after booting the live Red Ribbon on the USB drive, I used GNU Parted to remove the existing partitions (ext4 and swap) created by the previous failed installation attempts. I am unable to prove that this method will work again but at least it worked for me. I think that something was wrong with the existing partitions and removing them and allowing the installation wizard to create new ones from scratch solved the issue.

Thanks everyone for the insights provided in this thead.

Dears i have problem
