PS3 [Tutorial] (Read Warning) Installing Red Ribbon Linux on Rebug 4.81.2 - 4.84.2 D / REX

Did you follow the tutorial in OP?
If so, at what step are you stuck now?
Did you install Linux Red Ribbon at all?
Because in Linux there is also a Reboot into GameOS option.
What dbtimage.bin file did you use?
And what is the console model?

I don't recall the exact power sequence & the number of beeps but it's quite easy to get it wrong & trigger another sequence than the intended one.
 
Yeah i had this problem on my ps3 also... from petitboot to "Boot GameOS" doesn't work... the solution is simple burn red ribbon linux to pendrive or dvd, boot it and from linux reboot to GameOS.
As i remember i flashed bugged version of petitboot, file "otheros-petitboot+network.bld"

but the red ribbon is on pendrive, and it is not showing in the petitboot screen, there`s nothing there... how can I make red ribbon appears in there?

better solution is to use rufus to write red ribbon using iso mode (not dd) to your pendrive

can you help me please in how to create it on rufus? what options I must set?

When I open the iso in rufus it says that the iso is not bootable

I recorded the ISO on a DVD and it still not showing in the petitboot :(

Neither an ubuntu powerpc dvd is showing in the petitboot... please help...

there's some way to load live linux in terminal?

I tryed several ways to make the distro appears in the petitboot menu

Copied the content of red ribbon iso to flashdrive
Used rufus
Tryed to burn dvd
Tryed the ubuntu power pc

nothing... please someone can give a hint?
 
All Linux no matter what distribution can be start without desktop environment (and all running also shell in background). But I don't see how this can make You a difference while You didn't run any Linux yet.

I have access to openwrt when using this petitboot, I would like to know if there`s a way to start linux from dvd or usb over there, so I could try to load gameos

Or if there`s something else that I can do in openwrt terminal
 
What do You mean by access to openwrt? I'm not sure if You understand what is Petitboot. It is like GRUB2 on PC, a boot manager only.

a terminal... on petitboot if I press F1 I can access a terminal, there`s a way to start a linux distro by some command on terminal?
 
I can't get WIFI to work and the Bluetooth manager can't fins any devices, i tried BT 1.0, BT 2.0, BT 4.0 and BT 5.2 devices none of them get recognized. I have a CECHH model (the first model with NOR flash)
 
So i tried it 203 times now and everytime create_hdd_region.sh just gives me an error and if i try to install red ribbon ut says:" Some partitions of the storage device are mounted (in use) Setup cannot continue..."
Pls help

i do not recommend to install linux to the internal hard drive. you need a special pup, formatting, and the .sh file.

much easier to install to usb device. the HDD will not be much faster.

got PS3 Slim CECH-25xx 4.89 Evilnat and I'm stuck at step 3 :D
When trying to update from usb it says that data is corrupted (Error 80029CCA)
What should I do?
 
Well I've succesfully installed Red Ribbon)) thanks for tutorial.
But unlikely it wasn't woth it... system is old, web browser pretty laggy and doesn't playing online videos. And there is no way to install new browser like Chrome or Firefox, or any other software((

Nope, you cannot reformat the GameOS hdd without reinstalling the firmware.
A firmware installation using a specific PUP CFW is required to resize the GameOS partition appropriately, a standard CFW would automatically fill the entire disk.

Download an existing patched PUP with OtherOS partition support or use PS3 mfwbuilder to create your own custom PUP with a customised amount of space reserved for OtherOS. Refer to ps3 mfwbuilder tutorial if interested.

Currently trying to install fedora 12 , installed the patched firmware, reformated hdd and ran the hdd region script, i can see and format the ps3dd partition in red ribbon but not in my fedora12 live instance. Also tried looking for it with fdisk and other tools, in fedora it shows the hard drive in its full size, prob. doesnt detect the partitions at all.
Does somebody know what could keep the fedora live instance from detecting the partition?
Does red ribbon contain any special code to detect the otheros++ partition?

If you want to install Fedora on the PS3, you should. check this site: http://ps3linux.net/

fun fact: that web server is actually running on a PS3, and has all the information, .PUPs and files to downgrade and install fedora.
