PS3 Unable to Play Games off of External HDD Again

This issue has been plaguing me for around a year now, ever since Playstation decided to push the 4.90 update. Everything was working fine before I updated to 4.90 Evilnat. Ever since then, I haven't been able to play any of the games that are backed up onto my external HDD. When I go to load a game, it brings up an error asking to plug my controller in and says there was a problem with the system and it needs to restart. After doing so, it uninstalls Webman, prompting me to reinstall it afterwards. I also re-enabled Cobra. Sometimes after reinstalling Webman, it shows a different UI where it has account icons instead of folders. Sometimes when I go to install it, the console also freezes. Multiman also causes the same issue, and says there was a problem with the system.

I reinstalled the CFW, this time at 4.91 Evilnat. I installed the latest version of Webman from their Github page, I enabled Cobra, and it still won't launch any games without crashing the system.

Try downgrading your console to CFW 4.88 and see if the issue still happens.

Maybe there are some issues with the USB port, because it needs more power than provided to work with your external HDD.

I haven't tried evilnat 4.90 or 4.91, so you might wait till beta 10, which I just heard about. or tag @Evilnat to investigate. usually, if the usb port is being taxed, it will cause one of those notification errors with the exclamation point. if that happens, there's a strong possibility that the device has been destroyed. I once plugged in two unpowered drives to the same port, and the notification appeared: now one tries to draw too much power; the other not enough. it pretty much destroyed both drives, but that's not the fault of the cfw. that was my own stupidity about it. lol

This is a good idea, it definitely worked on older firmware. I'll try this later today.

I don't think the USB drives are shot. I forgot to mention that I somehow got it to run one game one time, but then it needed internet to download trophy data, and my console wasn't wanting to connect to the internet that day. Also it can play movies well from a USB. They do sometimes stutter but I believe that's a separate issue.

Bit of an update, I tried following the video guide. I enabled the QA flag and went to do the button combo, but it did not work. I then noticed that my installed game icons were missing, so I went to reboot my system and it had to rebuild database, which I really hope didn't break anything, but I did get 4 corrupted files in the game tab. I then tried the method again, it seems to have activated but then my console froze, something it's been doing a lot lately. I now have to rebuild the database again...

Could I just install the downgraded CFW through the recovery menu? Or do I really need to enable QA?

I'm getting kind of worried that my console is borked at this point, but I really hope it isn't. I'm begging for any fix.

Am running evilnat 4.91 oc 650/800 on 2004b

and ran prepiso on my exfat 256gb micro sd card and my 1 tb external hdd running exfat

And I was able to load 130+ games without any issues

(Ps3 4k pro mod installed)

Install lastest evilnat 4.91 then delete any corrupted data and unplug your external hdd and replug at the right slot the one next to the cd drive then go to webman and press scan for new games or refresh xml then press prepiso make sure your prepiso verison is 1.33

What is your external hdd file format?

I will try this, although, as I wrote in my OP, I installed 4.91 a second time a few days ago and was still having issues.

The file format is NTFS because I have games that are over 4gb.

Ntfs is known for compatibility issues use exfat

I believe I have fixed my issue. I had installed the wrong version of the update. I was supposed to install 4.91 [PEX], not 4.91 [CEX]. The games now run fine and I've experienced no crashes thus far.

I was correct in assuming there is nothing wrong with my drives or USB slots as that was not the source of the issue. I explained the issues I was experiencing as best as I could. Thank you for the help.
