PS2 Updating DVD-Player

I understood Your earlier message that You don't have hacked PS2 yet. FMCB is a hack You can use, so yes, it is ok. Just follow the tutorial or read readme to KELFBinder and use it instead.
Oh, I completely understand what you mean now. You need freedvdboot to make a freemcboot card. I have a friend who has a slim PS2, would he be able to make me a freemcboot card or do I need a compatible fat model to do so?

You need any entry point, in example Free DVD Boot. But it can be also FMCB or some old boot cd or swap method. But important here is that You need a way to put data on this memory card and a way to make signature for this memory card. That's why user must have a way to run homebrew on PS2 (or to have original PS3 Memory Card Adaptor because this can be done fully also on PC).

If Your friend can install FMCB on Your card (use option multi-install or cross-region), then You are fine.

Hey im having a lot of trouble with DVD playback using the update on an ntsc 39001 console and fmcb 1.966

I have the ps2 hooked up with an RGB cable and there are no issues playing games by disk or hdd

I posted on reddit, there are photos and a video there. It plays dvds 10% of the time or less it seems and there are some color banding problems. Without the memory card update the movies play, in all green?

I suspect my RGB cable is the issue because it has the gun con support composite and I have that hooked up on the same input and if I unplug the scar cable I can get the composite video and use the ps2's optical audio out to watch DVDs without a free memory card boot inserted

Macrovision? Movies from different region than console? Modchip interfering?

Lack of informations. :P
Sorry I get it. It has to be some type of macrovision, the console and movies are North American. The ps2 has no mod chip only using the free memory card boot. When I remove the scart cable video passes through the composite connection, which was used for my guncon2 controllers. My cable is the Retro access sync on Luma ps2 scart cable with guncon support. The TV is an rgb modded Sony Trinitron KV 27 v42 with the scart port sharing video 1 with the stock inputs. The update I used was the non progressive 311J north american english patch. The update applied yet "DVD player is not set up" is what my ps2 says, so I just unplug the fmcb card with the update and have to unplug the scart connection (otherwise its all green) and like I said it shares video 1 so the composite signal off the rgb cable plays dvds with no problems. Ideally, I would like to softmod my ps2 to play dvds in rgb, and the region free aspect doesnt appeal to me personally because all the movies I have for this CRT are for region 1 like the console ntsc u/c plus multi region dvd players cant play the protected region 1 movies because of the world map video loop

I tried the 3.04j patch with no luck, to reiterate the dvds play fine on the stock 2.12u player but if I have in fmcb 1.966 dvds will not play 99% of the time. Id like to use the scart rgb signal to watch movies with your update but I suspect its only compatible with earlier fmcb versions. I will test 3.04m and try to set up an older 1.8b fmcb 8mb magicgate card after the weekend

But ill check one more thing before I remove 3.04j, I have a sony slv-n50 vcr hooked up to input 2 on this sony tv, maybe pulling those front composite connections will do something ><

Is there someone who already applied this only via kelfbinder? I need some help, I was able to create DVDPALAYER.XLF via kelftool dnasload, however i haven't understood how to edit luas to attach the files provided within the folders of dvd updates. I want to reach the goal to apply the update on full console side without having to use usb and kelftwinsigner as usual. I used to copy from browser the update, then with ule copied to usb files, resigning in windows, and swap dvdplayer.elf to make it work. Seems that kelfbinder is able to do this starting from an XLF, but how can I automatize the process of copying additional files? @El_isra

@akilluminati47 Those DVD-Players aren't mine but original by Sony and hacked by krHACKen. I written just tutorial. Just FYI.

DVDP update must be from the same region as console.

Changing FMCB will not rather fix anything because it doesn't hack it.

I don't have component cable but DVDP should works on Composite and RGB.

@Berion oh yeah I knew that, i use dvdplayer update already on my consoles and memory cards, i just wanted to know if someone was able to automatize the whole process using kelfbinder. I will move the message from KelfBinder topic here to explain what I need to do:

"I have some questions about installing DVD Player Update. Starting from a folder called BEEXEC-DVDPLAYER containing dvdplayer.elf and other files related to the update i was able to transform dvdplayer.elf into dvdplayer.xlf with kelftool dnasload with keys and cmd. Putting the file dvdplayer.xlf in folder KelfBinder\INSTALL\KELF probably is not enough to make the dvd update working, bacause it probably requires the other files that are located in folder BEEXEC-DVDPLAYER. Looking at KelfBinder.lua i found function DVDPlayerRegionPicker() and function DVDPlayerINST(port, slot, target_region) so i assume that kelfbinder detects the correct region looking at console rom, or system options or scanning inside dvdplayer.xlf somehow, so that it will create a correct folder B?EXEC-DVDPLAYER on target device. How can I inject these files in EXTINST.lua? Can i modify the script to make it universally working for every region DVDPlayer update, both on MC USB and HDD? So that i only have to add dvdplayer.xlf and files in folder KelfBinder\INSTALL\ASSETS\DVDPLAYER?"

Maybe If we find a way to automatize the process we can convert every dvdplayer.elf in krHACKen package one by one in every subfolder and have a package ready to use in KelfBinder, making everything more simple for every user...

I answered to Akilluminati47. I don't know the answer for any of Your questions. That's why I ignored them. ;)
I have some ideas to try editing the script. Or maybe we can use the browser or ule to copy an already installed dvdplayer update, then trash dvdplayer.elf and apply dvdplayer.xlf via kelfbinder. But I guess it is very more elegant way to edit the scripts in kelfbinder to make possible to install everything from kelfbinder in one step (i think that the goal of El_isra is to do that, but it isn't well explained how to attach files to the update considering that depending on which region we choose the folder names are different).

Haven't tried yet, but i guess that is not working just by adding a DVDPLAYER folder into KELFBinder\INSTALL\ASSETS and DVDPLAYER.XLF in KELFBinder\INSTALL\KELF and then run Kelfbinder to apply DVD Player update.

Seems that El_isra who replied to me in KelfBinder topic is still working on the code, it's better to wait and see what kind of update he will do to his tool. That is reaaly useful because it can manage every kind of update we can apply to mc and hdd.

Boot your PS2 and plug the MC with the DVD-Update in afterwards...

He probably wants to say that he need green fix for rgb but with dvd update for some reason dvd player doesn't start all the times.

For my experience i had a similar issue with certain memory cards. If the connection to the card is loose it can cause some problems because dvd player update is not so small, it tooks some seconds to load. If you have a connection issue the player doesn't start. Try detaching circuitry from the plastic shell of the card and clean connections on the board. You can also turn off your console and insert many times your memory card on the slot to revive the metal pins. Let us know the results.

@akilluminati47 maybe another scenario is that you have fmcb installed in multi-install and a filesystem corruption is introduced intentionally, but i can't tell you if this could be the issue. I always recommend using normal cross-model install, just because if you are from a country and you own 10 ps2 it's nearly certain that you have different console models and revisions but from the same region.

actually very few people will need all the paths covered by cross model.

I noticed that the explanation on sp193 website wasnt explanatory enough

So I made a table explaining the consoles wich will use each path

Hey yall I think I could try to solve this with the replies I got. But in the meantime I ended up thrifting a DVD player with S video and have been enjoying the PS2 for gaming off hdd only

If I feel more curious I will try those various fixes and reply. Till then thanks everyone

so since i couldnt figure out how to do it from kelfbinder 2, i used the twin signer and while it does show 3.11 (RPC-1) on the browser it says the data is corrupt (i think its the icon but am not sure)

its not like i caan use it anyways since the laser is dead, i just wanted the number to show up on the version information lol, would be nice if the icon could be fixed or something because it doesnt show any size either

nevermind, it mightve even been a Wle backup i had on the root of MC1, i ftp'ed the icon again and now it shows up on the browser :D

now if only you could get browser 2.0 Without needing to power up the HDD unnecessarily
