I had 6 PS3s, all dead. 1 Phat, 3 Slims, 2 Super Slims. I was chatting with a friend yesterday and we were discussing which model of the PlayStation 3 is considered the most reliable/durable nowadays.
I know first generation Phats (90nm chips) had BGA and NEC TOKIN issues, even though they had insane cooling.
I have absolutely no idea how reliable the later Phats (CECHG, SEM-001 onwards) are.
Then, the first generation Slim (CECH-2000, DYN-001) still had the dreaded NEC TOKIN capacitors on the RSX. They replaced it with tantalums in the 2100. Although, to be frank, I don't see many people complaining about dead TOKINs with this model: it seems to be a Phat thing?
CECH-25xx/30xx Slims and CECH-40xx Super Slims all seem pretty solid, but I've seen a lot of these consoles with the "black-out" issue where the console simply dies out of nowhere and the power LED goes black (RSX issue? seems like it). Three of my own consoles had this issue and I made sure they always had good temps, fan curves and good thermal paste. One of my Slims (2500) have a dead GbLAN IC and it BSODs on boot.
Is there a consensus on this?
