PS2 What is Wrong With this PS2?

The PS2 model in question is a NTSC-J SCPH-50000 PS2 with a GH-029 motherboard. Console was warranty sticker sealed so never modded.

Symptoms:
  1. Without a memory card, audio and movie disks appear in the browser without an icon.
  2. Without a memory card, going into the tracks of an audio CD each track appears without an icon.
  3. With a memory card disks appear as a memory card icon. Movie DVD icon is exactly the same as a memory card icon. CD discs are a memory card icon but are at an angle.
  4. With a memory card and going into the tracks of an audio CD each track appears as a small memory card icon.
  5. After the PS2 has seen a memory card the icon used for the disc will always be memory card icon even if a memory card is not plugged. This will occur until the next reboot.
  6. Booted NTSC-J game but holds on the "PLAYSTATION 2" onscreen text and does not progress.
  7. Region free DVD movies boot to a blank screen. No dvd menu visible. No sound heard after blank screen appears.
  8. Some streaks coming off of some of the text in the ps2 menu.
  9. Going into the browser you see colored bars going from top to bottom but they disappear after afew seconds.
  10. PS2 freezes on viewing the memory card contents. As they start to appear it freezes.
  11. Two red lines through each memory card icon.
  12. Browser background wave sounds are more intense.
What is working:
  1. PS2 detects wrong region discs and displays red screen.
  2. FMCB always loads to the PS2 menu
  3. FHDB always loads to the PS2 menu
  4. PS2 temps app is the only homebrew app that loads and displays.
What isn't working:
  1. Loading most homebrew apps only shows a blank screen. PS2 temps and fmcb installer are the only one that load.
What it isn't:
  1. Bios chip - As I already changed it.
  2. The IOP RAM chip - As I already changed it.
  3. The 4 large resistor banks between the IOP and the EE/CPU.

The red dot is not PS2 related.

I didn't take note after the replacement. After I saw no change I soldered the original bios chip back.

Original BIOS PS2 menu versions:
Browser: 1.40
CD: 2.00
PlayStation: 1.02
DVD: 3.03

Obviously I can't get the actual ROM version as I can't launch the PS2Ident homebrew app.

The really strange thing is using of the memory card Icons for the discs. This really doesn't feel like a GPU fault though because for some reason the GPU has been told to render the memory card icons.

I'm just curious as to what people think. Unless it's something simple this PS2 will be parted off. The motherboard will be used as a donor component board.

FMCB worked on both BIOSs however FHDB only shows the FMCB logo on boot and then black screens.
If FMCB works you can hold R1 on boot for launching wlaunchelf

Tried a NTSC-J game and it boots to the "PLAYSTATION 2" onscreen text but does not progress. Game disc is fine and boots on another PS2 so the issue isn't the disc.

Probably there are some serious problems with your ps2, you can try to solder PMAP and issue some commands over the terminal. What is your motherboard revision and provide your sticker.

I think the problem is the IOP because of the devices either having no logo or the wrong logo and the IOP communicates with all of the devices. Obviously not worth the time or money to go any further. This will be a parts PS2 from now on.
