I guess that depends on if you can cool the phat ps3 off. I own a 25xx a. my first ps3 was a phat, but it ylod within minutes.
so you saying ps3 phat? i had the japan version few years back, it ran spot on, cant really remember what temps was like though but i did change the thermal paste as soon as i got it in case previous owner never changed it. i had it for only a month then sold it on.

might try get it again if i can find one.

it was the cecha01 one too.

For sure look into acquiring either a late model phat, or an early model slim, or 2000 series. With care my phat cechp lasted 10 YEARS OF NEAR DAILY USE!! That was not a typo, I took great care of it, cleaned it when it needed and used arctic silver ceramique 2 therm paste. Set fan speeds to keep temps around 55-60°C was loud but she was worth it. Cecha's being the og ps3 model still have issues that sony fixed with hardware revisions. Personally a phat or series 2000 will give u the most ease of use and the most versatility as far as the ps3 goes. O yeah and my cechp is still waiting for me to get the tools and the kahones up to delid it. She still works tho but temps started escalating quick, shut her down and stored her for a later date. I do have a ceche that I reurbished and the customer couldn't pay so they gave it to me, 4 usb ports and the card reader is handy but my daily driver now is a series 2000. Keep in mind if you get a super slim or series 3000 you can only install hen, 2000s and lower full cfw with ps2 iso support so pick your poison just make sure to set auto fan temps for your liking 65°C ish and keep it clean monitor your temps

If hardware-based PS2 backwards compatibility isn't a dealbreaker, then a CECH-25xxx slim would ideal, however some have a minimum factory firmware higher than 3.56 which means they are unable to install CFW. 20xxx and 21xxx slims are more or less guaranteed to be compatible, and all fat models are CFW compatible. All PS3s including super slims can use HEN.

i have 3000 and 2500, luckily my 2500 can have full cfw but not the 3000 which i really liked the look off. its white with white controllers, never seen them till last week.

Backwards Compatible PS3s are only worth it, if the you´re in need to have the PlayStation2 Hardware as a must, but they need a lot of care to keep them going, if the PS2 Hardware isn´t a deal breaker, then the obvious choice, reliability wise and ease of maintenence would be either the 2100 or 2500 Series Slim, although i prefer the 2100 over the 2500, just because i had a couple of 2500 blacking out on me, but they are still reliable machines, but youll need to watch out for the 3.56 Praxis revision

what is 3.56 Praxis revision?

what is 3.56 Praxis revision?
When sony was producing the CECH-25xx in factories it was published a huge exploit (located in metldr, a software file inside flash) that allowed to hack and install CFW in all the PS3 models that existed
A standard firmware installation with an UPDAT.PUP is not able to update the metldr
They continued manufacturing the CECH-25xx models but some weeks later all them was shipped from factory with a new (not hackable) metldr

This is why half of the production of the CECH-25xx model are compatibles with CFW (because have the old metldr) and the other half of the production is not (because have the new metldr fix)
Is just a coincidence that it happened when the latest firmware available was 3.56... and as a consequence we can identify the metldr just by looking at the "minimal firmware" allowed to be installed in the console

In few words, you can try to install a (fake) firmware named minfirmcheck that returns a warning screen with the minimal firmware of that PS3 model... or you could use bguerville toolset (web) to find it
If the minimal firmware reported is 3.56 or newer it means that it have the new metldr and is not compatible with CFW

thank you guys for the expalination

have seen a 2003b and a 2103b, not sure which one to go yet. nobody has bidded on them so i will have a good think.

Btw, you could try to see if you can replace the white plastic shell of your CECH-30xx with the internal parts of the other slim with CFW
Not sure if all the parts matches with each other, but this would allow to have a white PS3 slim with CFW :)

just out of curiosity, why would the 21 be better than 20?

@sandungas i have already thought of that and may well be doing that soon :)

never had a white one so makes sense to transfer all the components over.
