Arcade ROMs tend to be a hairier area when it comes to emulation..
The best I can say is to try each version with each of the half-dozen different arcade cores available. Considering that it's a game from the early-90s, one of them should work..
If you're looking to do anything PSN-related (online multiplayer, trophy sync, etc.), and/or if you use your PS3 to play newer Blu-rays, then yes. Otherwise, it's 100% optional..

Are you attempting to copy everything at once? Because trying to copy too many individual files at the same time has been something of an "evergreen" problem, that is as old as HDDs themselves..
The most common of those MicroSD adapters will only give you up to 128GB, so unless you find a special one or one of those dual-MicroSD adapters, that's going to be your hard limit..
I found a UMD shaped thing on eBay years ago that you can store in the UMD drive that will hold 2~3 Memory...
