PS3 4.84 OFW Released - Beware do not update

PlayStation 3 had an official firmware update released with the drop of system update 4.84. Below i provided a small chart for people on other firmwares and their hacks. Currently it unknown what prompted the update, could of been a simple maintenance update, which what appears to be the case on initial inspections. Could the update have something to do with PS Plus free games ending on the service? Very well could be but that is speculation at this point. PSX-Place will keep you updated of all the changes this update brings. The update has not patched the recent StoreHaxx release which is not something most will use as its simply an IDPS dumper currently (w/ other potentials possiable). Even on 4.83 and looking to exploit, you may want to wait to update until devs in this thread mainly @bguerville and @esc0rtd3w give the okay.

Checkout this thread for FUTURE 4.84 releated released.

  • From PS3FWBot on twitter:
"14/02/2019 03:10 CET: Sony pushed new PS3 FW 4.8400. Previous FW was 4.8300"

    • 4.82 HAN user's do not update
    • 4.83 and lower CFW user's do not update. (until a 4.84 CFW is released)
    • User waiting for 4.83 progress, do not update
    • Consoles that are not exploited but on 4.82 and lower do not update (If you want to exploit it)

someone can give this moded Pup for i try on my 60gb ps3xploit nand flasher ?
There is no modded pup, this was achieved by injecting files on 4.82 and then swapping hard drives and installing 4.84, then swapping hdd back. If you are on CFW you can just make a PUP with the correct files swapped, see esc0rtd3ws post detailing which file were used. If you use DB CFW as base you can just install CFW again afterwards..no real need for the flasher but no harm to have it if experimenting with this type of thing..

What if you had a soft brick?,
wouldn't you have to install 4.84 ofw again and loose han until a new exploit update is there?
Correct, but if he doesn't mess with his flash he should be fine. I don't think I ever had soft brick on OFW randomly.

I'm guessing you are not on 4.74 as that version doesn't exist :) I'm guessing you are actually on 4.84 OFW, and this is why you can't install 4.82 OFW, you can only go up not down.. There is no solution for a superslim on 4.84...maybe some day.
Thanks for the help guys. Sorry, I meant to say I'm on 4.76 (see image below). Does it matter that I am using a mac to format and put the files on the flash drive?

make sure it is formatted to FAT32

double check you have the correct folder layout

  • create a folder on blank USB flash drive named PS3
  • navigate inside that folder and create a folder called UPDATE
  • navigate inside that folder and copy the PS3UPDAT.PUP there

in the end, you have a USB drive with this structure PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

if you still have issues, try another USB drive and check the PUP is correctly downloaded

Still no luck. I am going to try it on my pc to see if that works. Anyone have a link for downloading 4.82 other than this one (https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/4.82_CEX)? It keeps prompting me to create some account which I can't because the captcha thingy is in another language and won't let me translate it. Thanks in advance.

hmmm not sure about capcha thing @Roxanne

here is link from Darthsternie archive

under Official firmwares, click next till you see 4.82

Can't do anything about this Captcha from external Sites but I added the "MEGA" Link from Darthsternie on the wiki --> https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/4.82_CEX#Download

Oh well...after 4.84 update was rolled out, Sony just removed the old firmware from being downloaded after they found out about proxy stuff.

as a general rule, NO!'

but there is a but...

@citra mulia mentioned this method (not for the faint-hearted!)

props to him for testing

Swap HDD technique:

1. Position OFW 4.82, install the HAN support files.
2. Replace 4 files from 4.84: vsh.self, index.dat, version.txt and in /dev_flash/sys/internal/sys_init_osd.self
(In this stage the PS3 will not boot (enter Safe Mode).
3. Swap with another HDD, install OFW 4.84, with the purpose of coreOS changing to 4.84.
4. Swap the HDD again with "HAN support files" installed

This technique does not work in NAND consoles and super slim eMMC.
and if it gives softbrick will it require anyversion? 4.82 or 4.84?
although i have not confirmed this, it seems viable, albeit not much use for MOST people, as it requires using exploit to copy files to flash using modified tools

but cool trick, nontheless

EDIT: @DeViL303 covered this topic pretty well already also

and if it gives softbrick will it require anyversion? 4.82 or 4.84?

Works very well, can play online. thank you @esc0rtd3w

Here is the offline HAN enabler script with 4.84 support if you want to test it, thanks to @esc0rtd3w for providing the offsets

Hello, one more noob here that apologizes if he is asking questions at wrong place. English is not my native language so i have hard time figuring everything out.

I bought PS3 few days ago and I wanted to put backup games on it. First of all I saw that my ps is cech 4xxxxA (so SuperSlim i guess). Then i saw my firmware is at 4.82 and when i plugged in usb and checked lowest it was at 4.6. So I tought I was done. Then I ran into HAN...and my hopes were back i followed tutorial, went to sign up and saw it was not possible to do so if it's not on 4.84. Like an idiot a updated and while it was installing I saw I was not supposed to do so.

Today I was with previous owner (he is older guy that knows even less then I do) and he gave me dvd with written on it "Kill Zone 2" and said he could play that on the same PS. I put that in and it was reading it like just regular dvd... it was visible on photos etc., but not on games section of XMB.

So questions are:

How can I see if PS is modded like that (games on dvd, Blu-ray)?

Can i put HAN on my PS and what version of HAN?

List of apologizes:
If question was asked...
If I break any rules on forum...
For my English spelling...

If there is someone i can contact via email for help i will be grateful!

Yes CECH4***A's are SuperSlim's. This also means they have what's called " metldr2 " on them which means they are not CFW compatible.

By installing 4.84 OFW you have lost the ability to use HAN and there is no ETA on a new xploit that would allow people on OFW above 4.82 to use it again. The PS3 Proxy Server would have stopped the forced update from PSN when you tried to sign up .

The only thing you can do is Backup injection of your games, but only games that are CFW2OFW Compatible can this be done with and also you would either need:

1. Another PS3 on CFW to be able to rip the game's for conversion.....or.....
2. A PC with a BD ROM Drive that can read and rip the discs.

This is a lengthy process to do.

Here my flavour of a 4.84 "Dualboot" firmware : https://www.mediafire.com/file/p03t8u2ns2sliw0/DB_4.84_littlebalup.zip/file

- Made out from OFW 4.84.
- Patched isoldr and spu_pkg_rvk_verifier to disable ecdsa protections allowing to install CFW 4.84 and above over it.
- Core OS patched files have the exact same size than the OFW.
- Core OS file table is exactly the same than the OFW.
- PUP size is exactly the same than the OFW.
More stealth than it, its an OFW ;)

Tested on both NAND (CECHC04) and NOR (CECH-2004B).

Enjoy
Can I install the dual boot firmware directly on my 4.84 OFW , I am using fat ps3 cechl04
