PS3 4.90 Demonstration mode - Locked and Un-usable

Hey guys, first time poster. love this forum tons of super helpful stuff. I had a ps3 fat at launch and sold it around 2012. Just grabbed a PS3 Fat on marketplace so i started researching where were at with things and wow the amount of progress is incredible.

Anyway the PS3 that i purchased that is stuck in demo mode on firmware version 4.90. I've tried all the different codes that i can find up to 4.88 there doesn't seem to be codes for 4.90 or at least any that i can find.

I've tried to install 4.90.1 from a flash drive and while the flash drive is recognized the update from drive option shows nothing in the main menu, and when using safe mode i get "the data is corrupted".

is there anything that i can do or am i totally out of luck? Ive searched pretty hard and haven't been able to find even a reference to 4.90 demo mode at all so any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.

This might be helpful but i don't have a hardware flasher so might be out of luck, the last thing i wanna do is brick it and put it in a worse position.
found a thread on psx hacks about MFW that might help but seems a bit over my head

A firmware reverter will work to get the system back to stock. The unlock code for the 4.90 firmware is 7897. You can switch back and forth between OFW and Shop firmwares as long as you have the current update files for both firmwares. You can get the 4.90 firmwares from darthsternie's website and the guide above does still work or you can use PUAD if that is a program you are more comfortable with, PUAD is my personal preference for this sort of thing

That tutorial did the trick thank you guys very much
Hello,

I have the same issue as you, can you provide steps by step or some guidance on how you were able to jailbreak your PS3. I have a PS3 in kiosk mode/Demonstration mode 4.90.

Thank you in advance!!

do you have the code to unlock it?

Ah yeah this has been covered before in another thread i think, the updater is broken in the latest versions, you need to use a older version or generate the key manually, grabbing a old version should be possible by using github's commit history

hm, have to change the key updater batch, so it will be more noob friendly without the different key version input.
though, this tool is not meant for casual users anyways.

in mean time, to update keys manually, and if the batch does not work for you, just copy the last included key version for all versioned key files in ps3keys folder and rename it to last version/current you are using. for scetool, you have to copy the whole batch of key targets and change that long version number. I have made the last key targets with a small paragraph, so you can easily identify what has to be copied.
