4.93 EVILNAT (Cobra 8.5)

PS3 4.93 Evilnat w/ Cobra v8.5 - (CEX/PEX/D-PEX) 4.93

So, I have a CECHA01 model that I just got. It has never been modded. Its on system software version 4.82. I cant seem to get this to install. When I attempt to install from USB, It gets to about 70% then I get a error code saying it is corrupt even thought I have compared the md5 of the source and destination files are the same. I used the bgtoolset tool on the ps3s web browser and tried again, still no luck. Anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong?
You have to use http://ps3toolset.com to patch your console to allow CFW installation.
Once you patched your PS3, you can install any CFW from 4.82 or later, including Evilnat 4.90 PEX

It is highly recommended that after CFW installation you dump your IDPS, PSID, act.dat for all your users and ERK (eid root key) on an USB storage device.

Also enable QA flags and leave them enabled. This setting will let you downgrade to any version supported by your console if you need it.

you actually purchase content on PSN with CFW? no ban?
You first need to disable CFW syscalls to log into PSN. You can purchase or download content on the PSN store. This is generally safe to do, but there is not guarantee of no ban. Only Sony knows who or when to ban.

You can purchase content also using the web version of the PSN store.

Use your main PSN account only to download content and a new account to play online.
That way if your console and account get banned, you don't lose your purchased content.

Other recommendations for CFW users are:
Never use auto login or auto update while using PSN or HEN.
Don't execute homebrews while connected to PSN.
Disconnect from PSN if you are not using playing or using a service that requires it.
Be careful re enabling CFW syscalls. Log off before create the syscalls. Reboot is recommended.
Keep a low profile while playing online.
Don't use cheats or game mods online.

WARNING: This option will overwrite your current savedata in dev_usbXXX, use it with caution

    • Download someone else's savegame for your game of your choice
    • Put the savedata in your pendrive in "X:\PS3\SAVEDATA" (pendrive must be in FAT32)
    • Put in the pendrive in the PS3
    • Select Network Tab > [★ Custom Firmware Tools] > PSN Tools > Convert Savedata
    • Wait until the conversion finishes
    • Once finished, copy your converted savedata throught XMB "Saved Data Utility (PS3)"
    • Launch your game and load your new savedata

    .Creation of act.dat tutorial

WARNING: The accountID is linked to savedata and trophies, so, if your current user already have a valid accountID and you overwrite it, you will be unable to use your trophies and savedata on that account until you restore the original accountID in xRegistry.sys.

I recommend to use an empty account without trophies and savedata or an account without accountID.

To create a fake act.dat, Cobra 8.4 must be enabled, and your PS3 must have at least one account with a valid accountID and launch a game that requires a RIF/RAP license file.

Cobra will search a valid accountID in all existing accounts and create act.dat while the game is launched through the XMB. If no accountID is found, act.dat will not be created.

You can create a fake accountID (like reactPSN), to do this go to Network > ★ Custom Firmware Tools > PSN Tools and choose between "Create accountID" or "Overwrite accountID" (Be careful about the last option because if you already have a fake/real accountID it will be overwritten). It is recommended to use these options in an account that does not have an ID. The PS3 will restart if everything went well.

The tutorial would be the following:
    • Download your purchased PSN game from PS Store
    • Put game RAP file in "X:\exdata" or "/dev_hdd0/exdata"
    • Launch your purchased PSN game
    • Cobra will check if any of your PS3 accounts have accountID
    • Faked act.dat will be created while the game is launching

If none of your accounts have a valid accountID you will need to create it. To do this log into the local PS3 account where you want to create the accountID. You can see if your current local account has an accountID choosing Network Tab > [★ Custom Firmware Tools] > PSN Tools > Show accountID.
To create a faked act.dat do the following:
    • Make sure Cobra 8.4 is enabled
    • Select Network Tab > [★ Custom Firmware Tools] > PSN Tools > Create accountID
    • Select Network Tab > [★ Custom Firmware Tools] > PSN Tools > Activate account
    • Launch your purchased PSN game
    • Faked act.dat will be created while the game is launching
Now you have a faked act.dat and your local account is activated. The act.dat file works for every local account, you only need one file for all accounts.

    .
    Block PSN log in

This method is developed by @DeViL303, it will only work with Cobra enabled, Cobra will block log in on PSN/SEN while the CFW syscalls are enabled, to enable it again you need to disable CFW syscalls completely (you can do it with webMAN MOD, psnpatch, SEN Enabler, etc…).

If you want to disable this feature, simply use the option Cobra Tools > Disable PSN Protection and you will be able to log in with syscalls enabled. To enable it again use the option Cobra Tools > Enable PSN Protection

  • There is some information that need to be aware, are the following:

    • The accountID is directly linked to savedatas and trophies data. If you have trophies or savedatas in
your current local account, THEY WILL BE CORRUPTED after setting FAKE accountID. To fix this, copy the
savedata to the root of a USB, convert it and then copy it back through XMB in 'Game' tab. To fix
corruption in trophies you need to delete it/them. Is highly recommended to do this on a local account
      without trophies/savedatas

    • The FAN speed is constant when in a PS2 game, BE CAREFUL while selecting modes because it will not
change after the PS2 game is loaded. It is also static when choosing a mode in the "Manual Speed"
option. All current speeds in xai_plugin must keeping a correct temperature in CPU and RSX

    • Do not rename vsh.self manually and ALWAYS use the option for it in xai_plugin, it can cause that the
PS3 can't load the XMB when you have full version of webMAN MOD, DEX Kernel and CEX vsh.self. The
CFW has a protection to avoid this

    • Target Manager will show SDK 4.8.4 while the PS3 is DEX, this is normal and it is because I ported
modules from OFW 4.84 DEX to 4.90, I patched them to work on 4.90 but not to show version 4.8.9

    • If you want to install OtherOS on PS3's internal HDD you first need to go to Recovery Menu and select
[Restore PS3 System], this will format the HDD and create a partition for OtherOS. Remember to make
a backup of all your data before

    • DON'T TRY TO SWAP KERNEL WHEN YOU HAVE LOADED AN EXTERNAL KERNEL FROM USB/FLASH!!
This can cause brick and you may need a hardware flasher to repair the PS3

    • You can unload Cobra/plugins if you have any problem with them, for this you need to go to Recovery
Menu and then reboot the PS3, this will disable both

    • It is recommended to ALWAYS activate the QA Flags, it is very important, it allows you to install CFW
from versions prior to the one installed and also avoids issues
    • If you can't dump or make an ISO of your game disc in multiMAN, go to mmCM tab and select [Switch
to multiMAN mode], this will reboot multiMAN and now you will be able to dump/make an ISO of your
      disc

    • OtherOS on PS3 with NAND is very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing (for example using
the wrong image to install petitboot), it can cause brick and the only way to repair it is with a hardware
flasher. PLEASE USE IT WITH CAUTION!

    • Make sure you are installing the correct image for OtherOS. xai_plugin tells you what image need to be
installed too. For NAND you need dtbImage.ps3.bin.minimal and for NOR dtbImage.ps3.bin. If the
wrong image is installed, it can brick on NAND, needing a HW flasher to repair it, in NOR you can fix it
      formatting the HDD

    • If your PS3 has a CFW noBD (in any of its variants) and latest versión of webMAN MOD (1.47.42 at the
time of writing this guide), there are chances that the PS3 can't read an external devices (/dev_usb000,
/dev_usb001, …) in the next two minutes. To fix this, go to webMAN Setup page, click on webMAN
      MOD Setup
and check noBD patch and reboot the PS3, now it may read external devices

    • Enable FTP and Disable FTP can fail randomly, if you want to use any of them wait a few seconds before using any again.

    • The option Check GPU/VRAM clock speed now should work fine without crashes

    • In PEX and D-PEX versión some of the debug options pressing triangle are missing because a/some
file/s hasn't been ported yet (needs a lot of research with XMB layouts, I have patched some of them
but others not, for example, trophies entries are messed up), those options are (maybe more):
      • ★ Check
      • ★ Owner Information
      • ★ Cancel Purchase
      • ★ Performance Bar
      • ★ No Memory Limit

    • If you have OtherOS/Petitboot installed it can created issues while loading PS2 games or rebooting the LV2, to fix this you need to use the option [OtherOS Tools > Set GameOS Boot Flag], now you can use the PS3 as always

    • The CFW is meticulously tested and no bugs have been found, but that does not mean that there are
any or that it fails at any specific time. If that happens, contact me as soon as possible so that I can
      solve it.

Final Words
I hope that the CFW is working fine and without issues for everyone, but if you see any issue, please let me know in my twitter and I will try to fix it as soon as possible: @xXEvilnatXx

Cobra 8.3 and 8.4 and xai_plugin source code can be found in my Github repository:

I forgot to mention [emoji28] my PS3 is 2004B version, you can add it as tested.

Use http://ps3toolset.com to patch your console to allow CFW installation.

Once your console is patched, you can installed CFW Evilnat 4.90 PEX.

That was the process i was using, however when the console checks the update it fails and gives a data corrupt message. Have tried different USB ports and USB sticks.

Have done a slim and that worked perfect.

You can try using Flash Writer 4.90 method
https://evilnat.github.io/flashwriter/

IMPORTANT: This tool could damage your console permanently if the flash process is interrupted. I do not take responsibility for any damage that result from the use of these tools.

Have also tried this method,I cannot get hfw 4.90.1 to install, usb is recognised on the XMB but no software data appears in software update, tried this in recovery mode too. Also if I get to the flash writer and select Nand, says I already have cfw installed. Have reformatted the HD.

Out of curiosity, are you able to connect your HD to your PC to see if its still in good condition? You can use Crystal Disk Info for that, if its anything other than blue in the software its good to be replaced

Custom syscalls can only be detected after successful patching and console reboot at the condition that custom syscalls were included in the nofsm CoreOS patch, it may not always be the case, it depends on the patch used, custom syscalls are not an absolute requirement to allow CFW installation, for instance a dual boot CoreOS with minimal patches should be sufficient for jailbreaking a console and could serve as nofsm patch.
With the Toolset system manager, the best way to confirm the patch was applied is to compare the ROS0 sha256 hash with the sha256 hash of ROS1 and of the loaded nofsm patch, if the 3 hashes match, the patch was already applied.
Alternatively you can also dump your Flash memory to USB and analyze it on pc with updated pyps3checker from littlebalup, the analysis logs will show the nature of each ROS, it will recognize a nofsm patch.

The PS3 Toolset doesn't make mistakes when it comes to flashing, only its users may miss a step or force the wrong step.
I doubt your issue is caused by the tool itself, using the old Flash Writer instead WILL NOT solve it, it is a lot riskier if anything and the chances to see the Toolset failing the job as opposed to the Flash Writer succeeding are extremely slim, if not non existent.

Anyway HFW 4.90 should install on any console, jailbroken or not, just like OFW, if it doesn't it means something is wrong with your setup.

Installed a new Samsung ssd which I had, tried the original hard drive too. But will try Crystal disk anyway

Used the exact same process with bgtoolset on a slim and worked fine. Doesn't want to work on the phat model for some strange reason

Like I said, HFW should install on any console, jailbroken or not, I don't think the problem is with the Toolset which most likely did its job, but rather with pup installations failing, maybe due to USB setup (GPT partition type, USB hub, etc...) but there can be other potential causes, common among them are idps spoofing, kernel type (CEX/DEX), failing BD, BT/Wifi, USB, HDD etc..

To get confirmation about the patching having been applied correctly, you need to post more data like screenshots of the Toolset system manager page (hide the IDPS) and/or the pyps3checker logs of a Flash Memory dump analysis.

Check that the path of \PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP is all upper case and the file name of the PUP is properly written. Show the file extensions to make sure it is not PS3UPDAT.PUP.PUP or other name.

Also check that USB is recognized on XMB under Video, Photo or Music columns.

I think we should also warn users that the Flash Writer should NEVER be used on anything else than pure HFW.
Only a full 7Mb noFSM patch can be applied on top of any CoreOS, ofw/hfw, cfw or other customised versions.

Applying a 3Mb patch on top of a noFSM CoreOS is very likely to get you a brick for your troubles, in other words using the FWriter directly after patching successfully with the Toolset and without reinstalling HFW first should be known to be a big no no!
lmn7 might have added a check for that, I dunno but nevertheless, no point tempting fate and if some are using the initial release code with updated gadgets, you are warned.
