Advice on PS3 purchase and goals

Hello, I am new to this forum. I am interested in purchasing a PS3 with the purpose intended of being able to play PS1, PS2, PS3 Games and Blu-rays. I have researched enough to know that PS2 backwards compatibility is limited to certain models. I am looking at purchasing a CECH-B01, which as I understand is a 20GB launch model and should be compatible. The person I am buying it from upgraded the HDD to a 120gb drive. The system firmware version is 2.80. They are located in Canada, and I am in US. I dont think there would be any Region incompatibility regarding games/blu-rays since we would be in the same region code technically?

I may want to run a CFW at some point so I can play games from ISOs on external storage, but I am not familiar at all with CFWs/Hacks/Mods on PS3s. I have only ever modded my PS Vita with HEN. Is this something I can expect to do with this machine if I buy it? Thanks for whoever chimes in with helpful info.

That's a pretty looking console, and it sure has a little amount of hours of use, just by seeing the firmware version. I wouldn't buy it to use it frecuently, or even to play PS2 games. BC PS3s are not reliable models, and issues with the bgas under the processors are a constant, they need a lot of care. Even though, if you still want it (I don't blame you), just mod it with CFW, set the fan speed and apply good quality thermal paste.

About the CFW installation, here's a good guide https://www.psx-place.com/threads/guide-jailbreaking-with-bgtoolset.33461/

I recommend you to buy a second console mainly to play all your games (super slims are a good choice), and leave this one just to play ocasionally.

About the region, that's an american CECHB.

the CECH-B models do not have wifi. the CECH-A does have wifi but otherwise is the same as B. either will play all PS1, PS2, and PS3 discs. you will need to update the system software to play newer blu-ray movies.

So you can add WiFi pretty easily as it has been done to mine. Only difference then is the multi-card reader. I think they look much better then my CECHA. Make sure to maintain it as I have had two CECHA models die on me but that was years ago before 3.55 CFW. But as long as it is a CECHB-01 it will play all the same games without region restrictions. To play PAL/NSTC-U would need CFW.
