PS3 After new HDD installation (both had HEN), DualShock 3 won't sync wirelessly after cold boot.

After new HDD installation (both had HEN), DualShock 3 won't sync wirelessly after cold boot. I can turn the PS3 on with the DualShock 3, but then the DualShock 3 won't sync. It will blink all 4 red lights forever.

I can get the controller to finally sync so I can use it if:
  • I hit the reset button on the gamepad with a pin
  • I plug in the gamepad via USB. The gamepad will continue to work after I unplug it
  • I hit the PS button on the *other* of my two DualShock 3 gamepads. Yeah, that's a weird one.
A soft reboot will not cause me any DualShock 3 problems. Only a cold boot.

These are all consistent, and true of *both* of my DualShock 3s. So it's not the gamepads, but the PS3 (or something else interfering, which didn't apparently interfere a week or two ago when my PS3 had its previous HDD (and also HEN).

Plugging the gamepad via USB into my PC didn't help. Not sure why it would, but just thought I'd throw that out there.

I tried repairing the PS3's new HDD's filesystem, which I think always thinks it's corrupted? I'm considering wiping it via PC and then putting it back in my PS3; but not sure if that will help with anything.

UPDATE: If I turn on the PS3 via the power button and wait, I can sync the gamepad. But if I turn on the PS3 via gamepad, it will stay blinking forever (until those three things I said are done).

HDD change have nothing to do with Your issues, and rather nothing with HDD itself (which You could prove if try insert and format old HDD which works back then).

Plugging DS3 into PC doesn't have sense because it will not communicating with console by BT but only USB in recovery menu. If Your issue is only syncing pad, try resetting it (there is some hole for that in the joypad if I'm not mistaken).

PS3 using custom partition table and encrypting contents, so anything which is not created by this specific PS3 is recognizing as empty HDD.

All good to know, thanks!

It is not. I have used that reset button many times. And also the exact problem is with both my DualShock 3s, so it's definitely not the gamepads. ^^;

Have You keep USB connection during syncing? PS3 cannot sync SA/DS3 without USB.

What? Do you mean... have I ever synced these controllers before? Have I ever had these controllers working wirelessly on my PS3, and do they work wirelessly now? Yeah I have, and yes, they do.

The only thing wrong with my gamepads is that if I turn the PS3 on with the gamepads' PS buttons, they will blink forever and not let them sync. Every method to get them to stop blinking and start syncing works, and plugging it in to get it to sync works, and even an extra method to get them to sync works (hitting the PS button on the *other* controller).

Well, I didn't use PS3 for quite a long time but from what I remember, syncing SA and DS3, demanding USB connection for at least once to register device (syncing doesn't work on BT alone if device isn't registered; for the same reason in recovery console needs USB cable as there BT isn't work at all for joypads). So if I'm not mistaken and if You reset joypad settings by pressing hidden button in their hole, You must use USB.

That's not normal behaviour. Turning PS3 by PS Button on DS3 should be synced automatically, just like normal turning on by pressing/touching ON button on the console itself and then pressing PSB on DS3 after that.

During my softmodding efforts these past few weeks, I have never needed to plug the gamepads into the console after I hit the gamepads' reset button. Maybe it's just not resetting properly? And this goes for both gamepads, so it's not the gamepad hardware that's faulty.

Yeah, I know. :P

TBH I'm not 100% sure about this but pretty sure that is how it works. Yet I'm to lazy to read the console manual. :P

Continuing - so - if I have right and You didn't need to sync them again via USB, it is good assumption that You didn't reset them (try press and keep that button for few seconds, You know, like some routers).

Anyway, I don't see any connection those issues with HEN install or HDD change. So it is some damages in DS3 firmware or BT firmware on PS3 side (rather PS3 if this issue You having on more than one joypad, obviously as You also noticed). And You can do nothing about if reinstalling firmware will not fix it (*.pup packages also contains bt fw and this is the reason why update cannot be done if WiFi/BT is broken, the same with ODD).

You can also hold the PS button for 10 seconds, the controller will turn off, then when you press the PS button again it will sync. I have seen this issue on one of my consoles. Some weird timing bug IMO, It could be HDD issues reading on the vflash partition. idk really. Factory reset can fix it for a while for me, but then comes back. I found the easiest solution for that console was to just power it on via the console power button, then turn the controller on a few seconds later.

this. i tested various cfw and all did same thing. only one that didnt have the issue was a ps3ita dex cfw

Hi, was anyone able to solve this issue? I'm facing it too and it happened after an HDD replacement too.

I tried all the joypad resetting options, but the issue still persists.

Any help would be incredibly appreciated .

Thanks
