PS3 Artifacting all of a sudden

Hey all, so I have a PS3 slim, I think 2103. I recently cleaned and repasted it and it gets good temps, max around 67c. I overclocked it a week or two ago, 650/750, and it was fine and stable, no issues with overheating or anything. I was playing Binary Domain today and suddenly after about two hours I get this artifacts and the game froze, and now after restarting its doing it all the time after a short while, even on the XMB.

I was really looking forward to playing a lot of games on it, is it dead?

So it kept happening after I was forcing it off, then I left it for half hour or so, and turned it back on and it worked fine, and I was able to play for another 30 mins or so with no problem, after which I stopped and shut down normally.

So maybe it happens after the system is on for a long time?

Also, I remember when I took the system apart, I put everything back as it was, except this small 1cm by 2cm foam piece. It was initially stuck somewhere between the metal frame and something else, but as I took the system apart it fell off and I did not know where it went, so I threw it away. Could that have caused this? There was only one small piece. That was a week or more ago, and I have probably played over 15 hours after that before I got this issue (checked I repasted on 26/6/25, about 2 weeks ago).

@esc0rtd3w I think it was stock as the seal had not been broken when I took it apart. It was probably a heat pad of some sort, it seemed to have been pressed against something as half of it was "moulded" into a shape.

In any case, it happened again today after playing for about 20 mins. I also put my hand on the PS3 while it was just about to happen one time and it distorted the picture as I put some pressure on the plastic case. So I thought maybe I left the screens a little loose (to avoid that cracking sounds as the plastic expands) so I tightened them again, but it still occurred, and then, it turned on but gave no signal. So now I am afraid to turn it on and thinking about how to replace it. If I buy the same model and put my HDD from this into another will it just work?
 
You can't swap hard drives like that, no. You could dump your old one if you have ERK (EID Root Key) and the restore data to new one. Or dump files over ftp.
 
Right, so if I cant swap the HDD, then other than the save files, what are the critical things to back up over ftp in the short time that the system functions?

It came back up again, for about 15 min. I am thinking its something that heats up inside (not cpu or gpu as temps of those look good). Something else, which once it gets hot it messes up everything until the whole system is cool again.

Also, if I was to get another PS3, what is the best model to get, the most stable, yet pretty hackable. I think it is 25xx but those are not guaranteed to be hackable, so again the same 21xx?

I would backup the dev_hdd0/home/ folder first.

The 25xx probably best choice. Usually still need to clean and put new thermal paste.

Edit: you should dump your ERK too if not already done so. You can use rebug toolbox or Nat cfw menu.
