backups on CFW

I'd like help in understanding what are the best (based on my requirements) currently available options for playing PS3 backups on a CFW PS3.
I've got a super slim PS3 and HAN has been awesome for me mainly because the "no homebrew" limitation makes it simpler.
I can either use PSN games or disc backups using CFW2OFW.
And PKG Linker can be used to transfer everything which is what I've been doing.
I admit that I had some issues even with those but at least I didn't have to think if any other options might be better...

Now I'm setting up a fat PS3 with CFW for a friend and the available options have not been good for me...
First of all I like the fact that with the options available for HAN, the games appear on the menu under Games.
It's simple. My friend finds even the PS3 menu intimidating...
Some of the options on CFW require a few extra steps in order to run the games which I'd prefer if possible to avoid in this case.

From what I've gathered the available options for PS3 games on CFW are the following - and this is where I need your confirmation, correction, addition etc :

- rips (on ISO or folders/files form)
These are copied over to the HDD and it's like having the disk on the HDD.
One drawback is that the PS3 also creates an instalation folder (just as it would do if there was a disk) which eats up even more HDD space and perhaps performance is less that using a disk.
Another drawback is that this requires Multiman/Webman to run (they basically sort of mount the file(s)).
Obviously for some games this is the only option.
Finally in order to transfer the game you either use FTP (Multiman/Webman), or a FAT32 usb, or an NTFS USB using Irisman.
Is all this correct?
Is it possible to use CFW2OFW like on HAN - obviously only on the games that work on this method?
Do converted games work like PSN games where the PS3 doesn't create an installation folder?
If yes then do you have to sign the pkgs or you can use them unsigned? Is the process decribed somewhere?

- PSN Games (which I prefer even when the game is available on disk).
After transfering the pkg (ftp or usb) and installing it you use ReactPSN to install the rap (via usb).
This for me doesn't have the convenience of HAN/PKG Linker where you use PKG Linker to transfer both signed pkg files (actual game and rap file converted to pkg) and install them.
The latter has the inconvenience that the files have to be signed first but I prefer that than using USBs.
Can the rap be converted to a pkg and installed on CFW like on HAN? How? Does it have to be signed?

Another issue is the use of PKG Linker on CFW.
I've read that the option can be added to the menu without installing the HAN Toolbox.
HAN Toolbox can only be installed on Rebug 4.82.2. Is this true?

Thank you for reading all this.

fastest, easiest and most convinient way is iso's and launchig them with webman.on most recent cfw's ps3,psX and roms for emulators can be lauched from external ntfs hdd, making that the fastest way to transfer them from pc to ps3.

ps2 and psp iso's still need to be on internal hdd,so ftp is fastest way to transfer and backup them from pc.for ftp to work at full potential ps3 needs to be connected to the same router as pc and with LAN cable,as ps3 wlan is very, very slow.

Compared to CFW, HAN is super limited in compatibility and / or a headache (take a look at this list http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/CFW2OFW_Compatibility_List ) with the black screens, Exclusive methods and all. No offence to developers, they are doing their best.

HAN is used by those who cannot get their hands on a cfw ps3. CFW is the way to go. Basically i prefer a CFW because of

- Homebrew
- Much much more Games compatibilty.
- Temperature monitoring and FAN control (since your friends is a FAT he definitely needs this, FAT is like minimum 10 years old)

BTW, you can copy the blxx and npxx folders created by CFW2OFW (or programs like those) to GAME folder (***not GAMES) in the CFW PS3 and then rebuild database and they will show up in XMB and can be launched from there. But of course, the compatibility issue will remain.

Thank you for your replies.
The goal in this case is to keep the final result as simple as possible for my friend. Just options which result in an icon they can run the game from. This has drawbacks obviously.

Ethernet is indeed a requirement for transfering large amounts of data. I've set that up.
I've never actually figured out how to do the exclusive methods. That's one of the reasons I prefer the PSN versions where that is possible.
I'll try out the CFW2OFW folder copy suggestion.

Any suggestions for PSN games?

on webman there's two clicks to get to launching a game (first to enter category second to mount/launch and that's it) and it can't get any simpler than that.yet your backups are clean and untouched, you can store them quickly and even if you use external hdd you can use it on other platforms.

Imo one of the most weighty arguments about why to have the PS3 games in ISO format is because this loading method is compatible with 100% of the PS3 game library. This only applyes to games released originally in bluray disc though, but most of the games was published in bluray
The only games that was published only in "PSN format" (in other words... in PKG) are small games and indies, and that games are a bit meh
And there are many games that was published originally as bluray but never was published as "PSN games", so the game doesnt exists in PKG format

In my oppinion is better to choose one of the formats and always do the same, this way you dont need to worry in using different methods

The payback of using PS3 ISO is that "gamedata" installation made by some games that have a variable size (some games instals a lot of gb, and others less than 1mb), but the reason why this happens is because the PS3 firmware treats the ISO like a real bluray
Think in it as a "virtual bluray", and the official firmware functions thinks is a "real bluray"

First of all a question: how does one rebuild the database (after copying CFW2OFW converted game in hdd0\game folder) on a 4.83 Cobra CFW?

I understand that my preferences are probably not common.
I'm only interested in a small fraction of the huge PS3 library. Mostly the exclusives. I will never have the time to play all that many games anyway.
I don't use online play.
And I also like some of the indie PSN titles - although those were released on disk too.
And in this case things get ever "worse" because my friend doesn't like complicated menu options - he requested two games only - a well known soccer/football one which comes out every year with minor changes (or minor in my opinion) and the well known one with the ancient greece slaughtering monsters theme (I'm trying to keep titles out of forum posts) - and not having to switch disks... I'm in pain here. Please understand.
I don't really mind having different ways to do things - as long as the result is better (simpler to use and with less HDD space required).
So I personally prefer the PSN games or a CFW2OFW conversion. Sometimes they are smaller, they don't require extra space on the HDD and it's just an icon under Games.

btw do people commonly use the fan control feature to increase or decrease the speed?

For anyone reading this webman comes ready to use on 4.83 Cobra CFWs.

Rebug CFW - Webman-mod - setup dynamic fan control - Ftp backups to machine - restart
There should be a folder called "Webman Games", then Playstation 3 or PS3, then choose game.

If that's too complicated, Official firmware is prob where they need to be.

Fifa and god of war series?, cof cof (that was easy) :D
Dont worry in mentioning games, the forum assumes you have the originals, but if you do or you dont is your problem
What we worry is to not promote or support piracy because this makes us partially responsibles of it

There is a lot of people that uses software fan control, and 100% of them does it to increase speeds, because the factory speeds are too slow
Technically, the temperature limit of the solders is in 90ºC but the motherboard could die before that
What you need to avoid is your PS3 to exceed the 80ºC limit in any case... actually is better to think that limit is located in 75ºC (because this gives you a security margin of 5ºC for errors in the calculations)
And to check if your PS3 is too much close to that limit you need to make some "stress tests" in some games that has a big workload, like the last of us, gran theft auto V, god of war's, etc...
And the temperatures when playing a game varies a lot, you need to find places in the game when happens a "temperature peak"... that peak is the only thing that counts (all other smaller temperatures along the game doesnt matters) and the peaks should be always smaller than 75ºC

Of course... you can configure fan speeds way faster to keep the max in 65ºC or 60ºC but the noise levels are going to be big... so is a personal decission

Thank all of you for you help.

I've installed two psn pkg games via webman ftp, installed via package manager and used reactpsn for the rap.Worked fine. That was easy.

Tried to copy the folders of God Of War 3 rip after converting it with CFW2OFW and rebuilt database. An icon appeared saying something about corrupted. Deleted and made them into pkgs. Installed those and game plays but I get no speech - music and sound effects are ok. I don't know if it's because I'm outputting audio through the analog AV port... It took aaaaaages to install. Will try to run from iso I guess.

4.83 Cobra webman seems to have Dynamic Fan Control enable by default. I was getting some skipping on the first game I tried (God Of War 2) so I opened the console up and put in new paste (not the most expesive one I have to admit, this thing takes a lot of paste - big chips). Now it seems to be ok. Temperatures hovering at CPU: 67C, RSX:58C. Never had been opened - sticker was untouched. Old paste not in good condition.

Thank you for the database_rebuilder.pkg in KDW.

i only get audio problems when i switch to another tv, never had a problem otherwise. restore default settings fixes that everytime.

as for the corrupted data, i have frequent problems with ftp (timeout etc). i use usb drive to transfer files as it is faster and error free.

and yes god of war is a big game, like last of us, uncharted etc. it will take time.

in my slim, rsx temp is higher than cpu temp while gaming. but i think below 70 for a fat during gaming is really good.
