It's all up to you, if you prefer to use a 5400rpm, you can, that's what s#ny used originally although I suspect it was a cost saving decision.i heard 7200 rpm ones heat more inside the ps3

Ps3 heating issues are caused by the chips, the hdd impact is negligible in comparison.
