Can my Playstation 3 Model be hacked to Install & Run Homebrew?
All PlayStation 3 models can run unsigned code (homebrew), however not all PS3 Model's can install Custom Firmware, Models that can't install CFW can utilize the PS3HEN exploit.
Custom Firmware (CFW). This is the oldest hack & contains the most feature's. It patches system files (firmware) permanently and becomes part of the PS3's operating system software.
PS3Xploit's Homebrew ENabler (aka PS3HEN). must be enabled by the user everytime they start the PS3 on boot. See PS3HEN vs CFW for a feature comparison (link).​

Why are there two hacks?
CFW can be installed ONLY on older models.
PS3HEN was made for models that can not install CFW.
HEN will work with all PS3's, but you should install CFW if your model supports it and an available hack for your firmware. This is because HEN has a limited feature set compared to CFW, See comparison here.

How do I know which hack to use on my PS3?​
This depends on which model of PS3 you are hacking and it's firmware installed. There are three models of the PS3: Original*, Slim, and Superlim. *The original type is nicknamed 'fat' or 'phat'.​

    • Original (Fat) Models - All original fat models are CFW compatible
  • slim.jpg
    • Slim Models (Check Slim Model's Carefully as some models are not CFW compatible)
      • CECH - 20xx / 21xx
        Both models are CFW- compatible.​
      • CECH - 25xx
        This is the only model that needs a closer look. Some can use CFW and some can not use it. Consoles with a minimum version (minver) of 3.56 or lower can install CFW. Consoles with a minver of 3.60 or higher must use HEN.

        An offline tool called MinVerChk (Minimum Version Checker) can also be used to find the minver. It is disguised as a firmware update. When you try to install it, the installation will fail and it will tell you the minver. It is available HERE.
      • CECH - 3xxx
        This model must use PS3HEN (unable to install a CFW)​
  • super.jpg
    • Superslim Models - SuperSlim's PS3 can only use PS3HEN and can't install CFW
.Checking the installed firmware. After you verified your PS3 Console is a model that is capable of installing a CFW, Now we must see if you have an exploitable firmware
  • 3.55 firmware and below can install a CFW pup file directly via the official USB procedure from the System Update for firmware installation (Remove any game disc from tray)
  • 4.82 - 4.85 firmware - Using ps3Xploit flash writer method (see @imn7 Unofficial 4.85 Release here (latest update) )
  • 4.89 firmware - bguerville's PS3 Toolset Tool/Website is currently officially down (hope to be back soon, but having some domain issue's), do not trust the unofficial clone imposter website's.(See Warning) . Other solutions are in development and in testing phases, the old PS3Xploit Flash Writer (prior to toolset) has been updated by to 4.89 but is being tested still. Also there is a HEN Flash Patcher (for CFW models) that is showing promises but still needs some development time and patients. PS3HEN is a great alternative until some of these things come to fruition.

What about refurbished Console's?
Some refurbished consoles may no longer be able to install CFW even if they originally could. Of course, these consoles can still use HEN.

please i'm new here and i just got a ps3 console. the firmware is 4.89 and its model is CECH21***. I used the MinVerChk and it shows firmware 3.56. I've been trying to jailbreak it but I don't know if I can jailbreak it with CFW 4.89 dirrectly from my usb drive. i.e can i do so without using the **ps3xploit.com >Domain no Longer owned by team** (ps3xploit.me =new) or .net or .me. will it work perfectly without miniweb files

Since you are on 4.89 Firmware you only option would be PS3HEN.
the ps3xploit website domains have been lost the .com and .net are no longer in the team poccession
and it appears the same way for .me

Right now for PS3HEN there is an approved Mirror from @Coro that @esc0rtd3w has suggested while
the team tries and resolve it domain / hosting issues.

I have a PS3 Slim that is CECH - 25xx, with a minimum version of 3.56. The current firmware is 4.84.

Is it best to use ps3Xploit flash writer for 4.85? If I do this, will I be able to update to a higher CFW number?

Would it be better to update to 4.89, and wait for bguerville's PS3 Toolset/ website to come online?

Any other recommendations? Perhaps it would be best to install PS3HEN until everything is sorted out?

Since this thread is pinned, better answer late than never; maybe it can help others.

The main issue with Flash Writer is that it requires some technical knowledge. Specifically, it requires you to install and configure a web server on your local computer and self-host the tool. Many people can do it in 5 minutes, but some of the less tech-savvy people may find it intimidating.
If you read the instructions and feel confident enough that you can follow them properly then you can go ahead and use it. If you're on the correct firmware version (i.e. 4.85) it's not any riskier than bgtoolset (that is not to say that it's 100% safe - but neither is bgtoolset). If you find it too difficult you can wait or use HEN (or give it to a friend to install CFW for you).

Once you have CFW installed you can install any firmware version you'd like (you can even downgrade by QA-flagging it). CFW versions >4.85 are safe to install, just make sure it's indeed CFW because if you accidentally end up installing OFW (or HFW) >4.85 you'll be stuck until bgtoolset returns or Flash Writer is updated.

It can be hosted online like any other script based on the old PS3Xploit framework. I guess nobody is hosting it because currently it only works up to 4.85. The 4.90 version we have is working, but we're working out some problems before releasing it.
 
How on earth did they lose the domain anyhow? Did it expire without auto-renewal enabled and it got seized by the usual squatters browsing 'expired domains with high SEO value' lists?

freedns.afraid.org is an option too that people have forgot about these days, 'ps3xploit.uk.to' wouldn't look too shabby. Plus they're not like freenom/dotTK in that they'll remove you for high traffic.

Thinking about it, does a hobby project absolutely need a 'real' domain as long as it's written on official channels where the actual source is? Same thing goes for HTTPS. It adds credibility and there's certainly been large-scale cases of abuse (PuTTY comes to mind, putty.org just plugs some commercial SSH client), but at the same time I dunno, console modding is the sort of thing people SHOULD be reading up properly on and in the right places before doing anything to their system, if they bollock stuff up because they can't read, they should leave it be.
