PS3 CECH-C02 PS3 Overheats even after delid

I recently delidded my PS3 as it would overheat even after having its paste replaced, I have placed new thermal paste on the die and IHS and put it back together, but it would still overheat after about 50 seconds. I tried reapplying the thermal paste to no use. I am using arctic silver thermal paste, if that may need to be changed.
 
Thanks for the response - I'm pretty sure it is because the heatsink clamps are screwed down tightly, and the thermal paste looks to have been evenly spread (On the CELL/CPU and IHS) when I checked that. Could I be missing something or not checking properly?
 
What thermal paste do you use ? In the past i used some very cheap paste and it was garbage.
Then i used arctic silver 5 and now i use MX-6
 
How much thermal paste are you using? I've seen issues when too much/too little is applied, you don't need much at all.

Cell only needs a small line down the middle of the die and a dab on top of IHS above the die

RSX I like to do a small dab at the center and smaller drops on each corner for the memory, top and bottom of the IHS

How does the spread of the thermal paste look after tightening down the clamps? If it isn't spread evenly, something isn't seating properly.

I am currently using arctic silver 5, on both the CPU die and the IHS.

I put a line of thermal paste on the CPU die nothing on the bottom side of the IHS, and a X cross on the top side (the connection to heatsink side). The thermal paste looks evenly spread out on both the CPU die and the IHS. Could it be the heatsink itself? It the aluminium was corroding and leaving some form of metal dust all over it. When I get a chance I will try to attach a image of both the aluminium dust and the thermal paste spread. Thank you.

All of that sounds good, as long as there is proper pressure and spread of the paste and the fan is working, the only real next issue would be the heatsink its self. Do you have CFW installed to be able to see the temps in real-time?

CECHC should use the style cooler with copper heat pipes and cold plates. If there is a corrosion it may be leading to a contact issue between the cold plates to the heat pipes, not properly moving heat away from the CPU and/or RSX.

Post up some photos of the cooler if you take it back apart.

Sadly, the console does not have CFW, and i cannot access the XMB as the storage is corrupted because of the overheating. (I Bought this secondhand broken but have since repaired the issue.) I do have two photos of the inner part of the cooler (Where the fan goes) that i will attach. I have since cleaned off the aluminum dust but there is still many imperfections.

Really doesn't look too terrible, but if its on the surface there is a possibility its between the copper and aluminum too.

If you pull it back apart, maybe start it up without the case and see if you can feel any heat transferring to the heatpipes or heatsink. If everything in the cooler stays cold while the console overheats, its a dead giveaway there is something

I can't think of any other real problems that would lead to the issues you're having, might be worth pickup up a clean head sink assembly from eBay just to give it a shot.

I tested it - With the fan on everything stays cold to the touch and doesn't heat up, although it may have been able to cool down in the time it took me to take it apart again (About one and half minutes). When the fan is unplugged though the copper heat pipes do seem to heat up a bit, but I couldn't tell if the heatsink was. I have also attached two images of the thermal paste spread.

Try bending the steel back bracket a little more to add more pressure to between the heatsinks and chips :)

Honestly everything looks as it should.

Lets back up a bit, you say its overheating, how did you come to this conclusion originally? What originally made you take it apart and delid? Is the console shutting down with 3 beeps after about 50 seconds? Is the fan ramping up before it shuts down?

I had a CECHB recently that I thought was overheating, console would boot get into the XMB then in 45ish seconds shut down. Turns out in the syscon errors the NEC Tokins for the CPU are failing.

I originally bought the console secondhand online with the YLOD, when you would turn it on it would do the YLOD after 3 seconds but just before it would power off the fan would go to full speed. I fixed the YLOD (2110 Error) and replaced the thermal paste. Even after replacing the thermal paste, it would turn off after a few seconds with the fans full speed - So I got a delidding tool and delidded the console (After practice on other consoles) and applied some new thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5). After that the console would overheat after about 30 seconds. After a day or so of letting it sit it would take 50 seconds to overheat, but this never changed. I know for a fact its overheating because the console will give a message saying its overheating and shut off with a Green then red blinking light followed by a YLOD.

I am pretty sure the cpu side NEC/Tokins are bad though (1001,1002 Errors) as when you turn it off normally (Before a overheat) it will have a flashing red light as it turns off (But not YLOD?)

Send the full syscon log, maybe the thermal monitor failed or something related to it?

I thought this was just from the thermal paste being forced out from the pressure - could that mean there is bad pressure on the chips?

That IHS is not making correct contact with the CPU die see if you can buy a replacement IHS on the bay

clean that die and IHS take something like a flat edge and put it on the inside of the IHS see if there is a gap or tilt same on die i never seen a bent die they usally crack and you got a bigger issue like no boot hahah

If that is the issue, couldn't I buy a cell bracer to help the bad pressure issue? Either way ill check if i can get a new IHS.
