I bought a PS3 off ebay listed as YLOD to fix. I was hoping the previous owner(s) hadn't gotten into it, but I fear that they did.
I opened it up and consulted the syscon. It told me that it wasn't getting temperature readings from the CELL or RSX, so I reflowed the thermal monitors for those two and replaced the power/eject board (found a thread where that worked) and I got it to boot without errors (other than power since I didn't have 12V hooked up).
I had to wait a bit to test since I was out of thermal pads. I got new ones in and buttoned it back up and plugged it in and didn't get any video out via HDMI. I was able to get it into safe mode and tried resetting video settings and restoring, etc, but I wasn't having any luck. I tried reformatting the HDD on my computer, and tried an SSD that I know works and still no dice.
I shelved it for a bit while I waited for an AV cable to arrive, I figured it might just be an HDMI issue. The one I ordered was junk, but someone I know had one I'm borrowing and I tested that tonight. I had no output on composite except in safe mode, no output on HDMI except in safe mode. I tried booting with and without a drive installed, no dice. I can't try component at home, I don't have any devices that accept that for input anymore.
I'm a bit worried the previous owner tried the usual YLOD "fix" and toasted the RSX. Not really sure how to test that from here. One thing I thought was strange is the PS3 shuts down on its own 20 seconds or so after I turn it on. No flashing yellow light or beeps, it just goes into stand-by. Maybe that's a hint about what's going on.
