CECHA01 Black Screen, can access safe mode

I bought a PS3 off ebay listed as YLOD to fix. I was hoping the previous owner(s) hadn't gotten into it, but I fear that they did.

I opened it up and consulted the syscon. It told me that it wasn't getting temperature readings from the CELL or RSX, so I reflowed the thermal monitors for those two and replaced the power/eject board (found a thread where that worked) and I got it to boot without errors (other than power since I didn't have 12V hooked up).

I had to wait a bit to test since I was out of thermal pads. I got new ones in and buttoned it back up and plugged it in and didn't get any video out via HDMI. I was able to get it into safe mode and tried resetting video settings and restoring, etc, but I wasn't having any luck. I tried reformatting the HDD on my computer, and tried an SSD that I know works and still no dice.

I shelved it for a bit while I waited for an AV cable to arrive, I figured it might just be an HDMI issue. The one I ordered was junk, but someone I know had one I'm borrowing and I tested that tonight. I had no output on composite except in safe mode, no output on HDMI except in safe mode. I tried booting with and without a drive installed, no dice. I can't try component at home, I don't have any devices that accept that for input anymore.

I'm a bit worried the previous owner tried the usual YLOD "fix" and toasted the RSX. Not really sure how to test that from here. One thing I thought was strange is the PS3 shuts down on its own 20 seconds or so after I turn it on. No flashing yellow light or beeps, it just goes into stand-by. Maybe that's a hint about what's going on.

Welcome to the club of the "no video through HDMI".

Maybe some pads on the RSX are just not making contact with the board. But that's only an idea. You need tools/machines to fix something like this (RSX), not a good sign about your console though. That's why I hate HDMIs problems..

Now that I recall, you get the "introduce an HDD" when you turn it on without HDD either via A/V or HDMI?

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. I was really hopeful when I was able to clear the temp sensor error, but this doesn't look great.

The real annoying thing is I this is my second console I bought to try to revive, and the first one was untouched until I came along. I was new to fixing PS3s, and my first place to check for repair guides was iFixit. Unfortunately they are propagating the bad "YLOD fix". Fortunately I didn't toast anything past working, and after having a couple other issues I stumbled upon how to actually diagnose PS3 issues, the syscon.

The one I had had some bad tokin that were causing YLOD crashes when I played PS1 games with FMV and when booting from cold. I found some tantalum caps on Digikey that were physically smaller than the ones typically used, and I could've fit all of them on one side of the board, leaving 4 of the originals (2 for CELL, 2 for RSX) to act as jumpers, but I couldn't leave well enough alone.

I removed all of them, and severely misjudged how much current flows between, and my jumper failed after an extended play session. The syscon is reporting the CELL as having bad BGA joints or just being broken, and I don't have access to the rework tools required for BGA repair, so I was hoping to get lucky again and score another untouched console. Seems that luck fell through.

Now that I recall, you get the "introduce an HDD" when you turn it on without HDD either via A/V or HDMI?
Are you asking me? I can't get output on AV or HDMI, so I have no clue, and I don't have any working/semi working PS3s to check.

You only have video in safe mode but not when you turn it on without HDD? Usually the message telling you to put in an HDD takes 15 seconds sometimes, or maybe more. Wierd stuff..

You should post your log in the syscon thread. Also, a guy that was having an HDMI issue is still fighting to solve it, with reball machine and all. It's a pain in the ass.
