CFW on OFW 4.89 ?

Hi, I just got my hands on a PS3 CHEL04 in OFW 4.89.

I'm looking to install a CFW on it pretty quickly (not HEN) but this version is not compatible with the flasher.

I first thought of downgrading the console, but how?

Thanks to all

It's not possible to downgrade on OFW. bgtoolset is not updated yet to support OFW 4.89.

Due recent events it's uncertain when it will support 4.89.

Meanwhile you can install HFW 4.89 + HEN. The features are very similar to CFW.

You can switch to CFW 4.89 or downgrade once bgtoolset is updated.
Alternatively you can install CFW 4.89 with a hardware flasher.

WARNING: There is an unofficial bgtoolset that is based on a leaked code containing bugs. It is recommended that only use the official site to prevent a potential brick of your console.

I can confirm that a hardware flasher has successfully worked for me which I would guess is the only way to go FROM OFW 4.89 TO CFW 4.89. ON A CECHH PHAT CONSOLE. Hen worked for the console also just fine. But is now running Evilnat 4.89 beautifully!

Are we even sure it's still a question of "when" rather than "if" at this point?

At this moment, it is uncertain "IF" bgtoolset will continue existing...

if bg decides to continue, the support for 4.89 is matter of time.
Currently the unreleased version supports 4.89, but needs more tests to avoid regrettable results.

At least bg left open the option to continue "IF" the community shows support to that project at least financing the basic costs.

Shouldn't this be posted in a huge sticky post? I'm pretty sure most people here have no idea about this.

Hello, thank you for you answer.

Do we know when it will be released?

I want to give this PS3 for a friend's birthday (which is in less than 3 weeks) and I need the CFW to run PS3XPAD

:)

I believe if the toolset is made open sourced, then all the problem could be solved.

First of all, people could do things like updating the toolset to support newer Fw and also test among themselves, this would be extremly useful if @bguerville decides to retire.

Also, this could result in an offline version of the toolset which one can host on a Local server, this would be extremely helpful if enough donations are not received and the site goes down (currently server bills are paid till 11/2022). We have seen this with the rebug site.

At the end it's bguerville's decision, but i think making it open source would be very helpful to a lot of people. Consider people with CFW compatible consoles on 4.89 OFW, if their qa flags are not enabled then their is no way they can install CFW, they will have to rely on HEN, which certainly has limited features when compared with a fully-fledged CFW

This has been discussed before. bguerville already said that bgtoolset is a *private* project. Also keeping it closed reduces the chances of receive a security patch. At least Sony engineers should investigate more (something that is questionable now that part of the tool was leaked).

If other developers want to make their code other than @bguerville's private code go for it !, this is the problem no one wants to make the effort as he and other developers have. So it's like mommy can I have another magic cookie!
I don't want to do my chores.

PS3 is 2 generations old and $0ny is no longer interested in it, otherwise, they could have done things like updating the keys, also they decided to shut down the PSN servers last year.
I apologise if i for my previous post for raising an issue which has several times been discussed in the past

But the entry point needed ie patching the flash to allow for CFW installation is only available via the bg toolset, at least for the 4.8X FW

Its not just a simple update at times and if you are still having active development on the project as you were why would you add confusion with all kinds of unofficial releases that are going to do nothing but cause problems and take away from the guys who are actually writing the code / developing / doing proper test.

Yes IF HE decides to retire or there was no other options, Believe me most of the devs in the scene rise when there is a need.
the toolset was not an urgent need to the scene but rather a want. ANYONE who updated had an option in HEN to run homebrew. So as mentioned before already with new features that were almost ready to deploy before the firmware update had to go back a few steps. v1.1 could of been rolled out but made sense to wait for v1.2 since it was not a NEED but rather a WANT.. Alot of the developer's were around during the 3.41 / 3.55 era where if you updated you had no soft mod option like we do with HEN. So your urgent needs are not the scene where there is a solution and the delay is for testing.... Something the toolset needs because of the nature of the tool and what its doing to the system and the feature set it includes especially with the v1.2 update.

Making it open at this point in time with current development and other chopping at the bit to rebrand is not the best move IMO, something that should not be forced because bgerville is using all his work. but yea if he retired he MAY make it open and totally his choice that should be respected. its really upto bguerville and he has really had to beg themselves and himself and the ps3ecploit team has been victim of many lower level so called devs just trying to steal and leak works and projects. At the expense of safety to other's so they can gloat for a short period. Sp wjhat more does the community owe him, i think the community as a whole owe him more respect. Now many do and bad apples are always the loudest but he has begged and laid out this situation for the past year +. So nothing he has said should be shocking, just needs to be taken serious.

bguerville has made it clear he would work and share with serious developer's, so its there in reality... I think he would like to see contributions for other's but i do not think him or alot of other devs are fans of inferior rebrandings that when even they warned about the dangers they pose, those people keeo them up when they are dangerous.. So i think having a bit of control over such a project is a good thing of something of this nature.

So, a dev is having a personal project, decides to make available for public use, without forcing anyone to make a donation, just giving the option to do if someone wants to...

And after his code and work has been stolen/leaked/whatever, guy gets pissed off and no one can blame him for that..

So, imho, telling him after all this work and disappointment, "hey man, just do your work open source" it's not so nice... I would call it rude, at least. It is his option whether or not to disclose it. He could even report it and claim some little amount of money, but he didn't. He even paid most, if not all the costs up to now. We can at least thank him, for uo to now.

This should be seen as a lesson, to never update before a cfw gets released ..

And there is always the hen option..

You're wrong about this. bgtoolset is not the ONLY entry point for 4.8X. There are other options like hardware flasher or HEN Flash writer.

HEN Flash writer has been open source for years. It allows CFW installation on 4.82-4.85, but NOBODY has updated it for 4.86 and later or made improvements to make it safer. bguerville made from scratch his own private "flash writer" and he is only making us a favor sharing it. The donations are not a gift to him, it's an investment that returns to the community.

Now people want bgtoolset to be open source because it's updated and it's the easy path to get pirate games on 4.89. Ok, CFW is not only for piracy, but the reality is that it's mainly used for that. Also HEN already offers 95% of the functions of CFW. Like STL said CFW: is NOT a NEED.

It's not possible to install CFW at the moment if you're on OFW 4.89 (at least not without a serious risk of bricking your PS3).
For HEN you can install HFW 4.89 and while the official site is currently down, there is an official mirror on Github, which works fine.

Hi @NiQ Thanks for your answer, i tried with de Github mirror, it try to install the hen exploit, when you launch the installer from xmb, an error occured...
I found a solution by download the offline method, mount a web server on my Synology NAS, and i install HEN exploit with it.

Hope to migrate to a CFW one day.

Thanks
