PS3 CFW to OFW (4.85) [Downloading bought PSN GAMES]

Here is the Situation:
I have 2 PS3s, one Super Slim (OFW 4.86) i have used for a long time, with A LOT of PSN GAMES
and one Slim with REBUG CFW (4.85). Since i own quite a lot of games as Discs as well as having a lot of games
from the PSN store i would like to consolidate all my games on one big hdd.

I plan to upgrade the hdd on the Slim, switch it back to OFW (getting banned would loose me quite a lot of games...), download all the PSN games i bought,
switch to CFW again and copy all my hard-copy games onto it as well.

Since i am kind of a newbie when it comes to these matters i decided to ask a few questions here first

1) How would i switch the Slim back to OFW?

2) I heard about the possibility of Dual Boots (CFW/OFW) but i could not find any DB CFW for 4.85
(what would be good sites for obtaining CFWs anyway? [originally i followed a reddit tutorial and they recommended rebug so i just went with that and am pretty satisfied with it])

3) Last but not least: I would like to keep my savegames from my Super Slim (maybe perform a backup/restore from my Super Slim to my Slim after switching it back to OFW?)

I would be very grateful for advice. (Especially advice that does not result in me getting banned :-D )

About your owned PSN games, to download them you have to be on ofw 4.86 since this is the current firmware to go online.

To be perfectly safe, IMHO, install latest ofw, download your games, then install hfw, and jailbreak to cfw. Rebug 4.86 lite is the most preferred way.

Just install official 4.86. twice, to be sure. Also cleaning your hard disk would be good. Especially backing up your data and then formatting it on your PC. Then you can put it back on your system and it will ask you for the official fw once again

FYI
What we commonly call Dual boot firmwares do not give you full dual boot capabilities per se.

A dual boot firmware is a OFW with minimal patching (technically a CFW) so that you can reinstall CFW without needing to jailbreak again while using a firmware as close to OFW as possible.
However, the switching from full CFW to dual boot FW & back is done on the same internal hdd which implies a few annoying consequences among which, the fact that any installed homebrew on CFW is still visible after installing the DB firmware. It's pretty much the same as using HEN in that regard. Another annoying consequence, as you keep installing PUP files to switch firmware, OS file customisations are lost & some modifications must be reapplied constantly..

On a real dual boot system, you would have 2 different HDDs. You would swap the internal hdd whenever you swap firmware. In this kind of setup, when on OFW, there is no trace of CFW usage, it's the safest possible way to use PSN, game online, still enjoy CFW on a PS3 console & keep customisations safe as there is no need for PUP installation.

Anyway, DB firmwares are no longer really needed nowadays because the PS3 Toolset's Flash Memory Manager allows users to jailbreak their CFW compatible console at any time. You can enjoy full OFW on your PS3 one minute & use FMM to go back to CFW the next.

Additionally, it's possible to use FMM to manage a dual boot system with 2 internal hdds to swap, if that's the kind of setup you are interested in using. Until a few months ago, the only publicly available way to setup a dual boot system was to use a permanently installed hardware flasher. FMM now makes it trivial for users to setup a software managed dual boot ps3 system.

You can get available CFW PUP files in general from our resources section with the exception of Rebug CFWs which can be downloaded from https://rebug.me

Edit:

Rebug Lite 4.86 has been available for a while if you wish to update.

I also suggest that you use Rebug Toolbox to toggle the QA flag if it has not yet been done. Once toggled, you will be able to install any firmware version on your console, downgrade & upgrade.
This way, you can also install Rebug REX 4.84 if ever you are interested in using funky DEX features.

Its easy, download and install OFW via USB storage. Since you are switching to download PSN games, I suggest you backup your HDD first, then install OFW, format your HDD and install OFW again (it asks you to do it anyway) just to be safe.

You can backup and restore ps3 saves using Apollo Save Tool.

so,
1) plug in usb with the ofw from sony website and update via System update from Storage media?
2) replace hdd
3) it prompts for ofw again?
4) DL PSN content
5) perform jailbreak with FMM (no hfw needed?)
6) install cfw again

in the future, i can just go back from cfw by installing the ofw like i would hfw on ofw? or cfw on hfw?
(by inserting drive in usb000 with the PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP structure?)

also, another quick question, updating games (from Discs) does not require psn access, right? is that safe to do on cfw?
e.g.: i pick up a used copy of a game at GameStop put it into my Slim running cfw and select update...

yes

ofw or hfw can be used with FMM

to get back to ofw from cfw, just install ofw. once on ofw (or hfw), you must jailbreak again to get cfw back.

it is safe to update games on cfw, even with no psn account.

very nice, thank you guys for taking the time!
one last question:
is there a way to DISABLE psn access (like changing the psn server ips in the cfw) so that i CAN NOT go online at all, even accidentally? (while still leaving networking in tact for things like UMS and FTP access)

Or do i have to block the ps3 from the internet at the gateway/router?

under debug settings, change "np-environment" to "invalid" to disable psn.

change it back to "np" to enable psn again.

thank you! (will probably still block the MAC address just in case...)
i know i said only one more question, but here is another:
I have savegames on my ofw super slim, some of them are copy protected, now with Apollo i could still copy them, but i dont want to get cfw/hen/han whatever on my super slim, i want to leave it totally clean, is there still a way to move those saves to my new cfw slim? (the others i can just copy to usb drive and then import/resign with Apollo [even though copying every single one by hand is a massive pain...])

no...i dont know of any way to copy the copy-protected saves without hen or cfw.

On OFW, You can copy save data which are not User Locked and Copy Protected on a USB drive. If you want to copy even those protected saves, a PS Plus subscription is required, so you can backup online and transfer to another one.

Again, thank you all for answering! I guess i could by ps plus for 1 month JUST to backup my savegames...
wow this process is turning out to be A LOT of work, i am looking forward to this all being done ^_^

That is it for now, thanks to everyone who took the time help me, great forum, great users! ;-)
