PS3 CHECE01 not reading PS2 games or DVDs only

Hi all,

Joining the forum to ask for your collective wisdom on a recent PS3 issue I've been having.

Context of my issue:

I own a CHECE01 PS3 (the Metal Gear Solid bundle edition fat PS3 with partial emulation PS2 backwards compatibility) that I purchased new back in the day and have been using it to play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games ever since.

Over the last several months (or even years?), my PS3's ability to read a PS2 game or DVD has steadily declined to the point that it no longer works.

When I put in a PS2 game, the indication in the top-right corner will spin but the game will not be selectable to start. While I used to be able to repeat the process of ejecting, then loading a game until it worked, none of my games will work anymore.

I want to note that, unlike some videos I've seen online, my system doesn't make any strange, stuttering, or loud noises when reading the discs.

I have also tested and confirmed that PS3, PS1, and Blu-Ray discs work just fine. The issue is only with PS2 games and DVDs.

Questions to the board:

  1. My understanding is that there is only 1 laser that could be replaced (i.e., there isn't an individual Blu-Ray laser and an individual DVD laser). If this is the case, how is my system able to read PS3 games but not PS2 games?
  2. Would a laser replacement fix this issue?
  3. If it isn't a laser issue, what's the likely problem and how should I approach fixing it?

Thanks everyone - I appreciate your help in advance!

Definitely the laser device in your bd reader. Buy a new laser unit (KES-400) from any reputable seller. Otherwise, you risk getting a bad/faulty device that does not read CD or DVD or BD. Maybe none of the formats. These are sensitive things. All the different formats have different wavelengths and with just a single laser it becomes more sensitive. A BD-410 has two lasers and fits in your machine, but then you have to change the entire bd reader (and remarry it). However, these (410) are more reliable.

Thanks a lot TriForcer! I really appreciate your input.

To provide a quick update in case anyone in the future is having the same issues I had and stumbles across this thread, it ended up being the laser, as mentioned.

I purchased a KES-410 laser unit to replace the burnt out KES-410 that was used in my PS3 model (CHECE01) and, using a video on YouTube as a guide, I replaced the unit in my PS3 and things work flawlessly now. All I needed to do was replace the unit and connect the ribbon into the new laser, then put everything back together. I didn't have to replace the entire disc drive or remarry the motherboard from the old disc drive to a new one.

All-in-all, it took less than an hour to fix and cost me less than $10.

Thanks again to TriForcer and the rest of the board!

Nice to hear that it worked out for you.
Interesting that you have a KES-410 in your machine. From what I can read, there is normally a KES-400 in the CECHE machines, but the CECH01-MG versions (Metal Gear) came with the KES-410 and were apparently the last ones that were backwards compatible.

I have a question on PSX-place just because I'm curious. It concerns whether the KES-410 can read SACD discs. If the KES-410 is in your machine from the beginning (original) then it means that the KES-410 reads SACD, since the SACD logo is on the CECHE01-MG. This means that I need to try another new laser for my spare KES-410. Tried with a "new" laser in it, but SACD didn't work (but everything else).

So - thank you very much too - another piece of the puzzle in the SACD riddle.

The CECHH00MG (a.k.a. Hagane) can not play SA-CDs. It's not indicated on the box, nor in the dev wiki nor in the user manual.

So, it's highly unlikely that the KES-410 unit can read SA-CDs as it was included on consoles that can not use all that feature.

True, not all PS3s can play SACD, but all (phat) can detect SACD if a SACD-compatible disc drive is mounted. I've tried putting a working KES-400 into one for example CECHH04 (can't play SACD) and they show up in XMB. If SACD appears in XMB, it can also be played by a CECHA/CECHB/CECHC/CECHE. The laser unit is the sensitive part. Out of three purchased KES-400s, one may work as it should. Someone doesn't read BD but is otherwise OK, another doesn't read SACD but is otherwise OK, etc. That KES-410/BMD-006 can work with SACD discs has been proven by NightLess (see thread) who has a CECHB00 with KES-410/BMD-006 and who can play SACD with that setup.

I also want to add that laser swap may not always work even if it is the same laser. There seems to be other factors related to calibration data as well. It is not well documented however.
