PS3 Compatibility List - PS2 on PS3

I know the method how to rip a ps2 game.
But this method never works on PS3.
I tried 2 games,both can't boot on PS3 and PCSX2.

I think this is the best place to announce this:
Today I've added CUE parsing and multi-track support for PS2 CD ISO in webMAN MOD.

I expect that this change help to improve a bit the compatibility of the PS2 games in CD format, since the multi-tracks in PS2 CD games were ignored until now (the ISO/BIN require a CUE file to use this feature).

The term "ripping" is a bit misleading, the oldest definition is about removing files or replacing files by other files of smaller size... with the goal of reducing the game size
Is like the british "jack the ripper" that was removing parts from human bodies (sorry for the disgusting comparison)
Later the term ripping was used also to the procedure used to create an 1:1 copy of a optical disc
Are very different things as you can see

In my previous post i was talking about reducing the game size (so i was meaning about the first definition)
In general is a bad idea to remove files because the game could have functions that checks that files... and is hard to know if the game checks them... so as prevention is better to dont remove any file

Just to show an example with PS3... in many PS3 games when we boot the game for first time it performs the "gamedata" installation (it copyes files from the optical disc to dev_hdd0)
If you remove that files the gamedata installation fails with an error... so the game doesnt boots
But if you replace them by a 0kb dummy the gamedata installation copyes the dummy like if it where an official file (this means the game is not checking the hash or size of the file... we are cheating it)

In this example what the game is doing is not exactly a "presence check" of the file... but in the practise it works like that. If the file exists the game works normally... but if you remove it the game crashes
Is almost imposible to know what the game is going to do after we remove files... so the golden rule is to never remove files

I'm guessing he meant more multi-track CD games that may not be on redump, such as less popular demo discs or games that may not have gotten dumped.

Yes, i mean some PS2 game demos/software where the size was so small that they decided to release it on a CD format instead of DVD... just to reduce manufacturing costs

The first candidates that came to mind that could be published in CD are the discs that was given "for free" when you was buying the official playstation magazines (for UK/euro as far i know), but maybe there is also some other sony utilities in CD format (dunno, some internal utilities discs that was leaked or things like that)

How do you repack games? PS2 games require special settings for iso, also some games are LBA sensitive, those are hard to mod in easy way to get some space.

For now I can only suggest redump:
http://redump.org/downloads/.

Look for "Cuesheets" at "Sony PlayStation 2".
There is ton of info (CUE) there about games\demos\utilities on CD.

The SpongeBob Squarepants - Battle for Bikini Bottom config is totally bugged/unneeded. It's 48kb large lol. I guess it's included in both ps2config and managunz.

SpongeBob SquarePants - Lights, Camera, Pants! (SLUS-21252) randomly freezes at the loading screen, but honestly I am starting to think this is just the game itself. I remember playing this game when I was younger on my ps2 and it would occasionally freeze on loading screens (only loading screens AFAIR), but even pcsx2 has the problem of freezing according to the wiki. The game is pretty janky regardless...

try turning off "smoothing" under game settings on xmb

Has anyone tried Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends? I tried it today but it fully crashed my ps3 (three beeps and turned itself off). I'm on Rebug 4.86, loading with mmcm.

1. try another iso of the same game
2. try to load a config by installing Managunz and run the game from there

If 1 or 2 doesn't work, the game doesn't work. There's nowhere near 100% compatibility and never will be.

This is the compatibility list, you should bookmark it. According to this Dynasty Warriors 5 works. I don't know if that's the same game or not, but if not it's not on the compatiblity list so no one has added it.

That game theoretically should work as it is just an expansion from 5. Check the iso's md5 using hashcalc and compare it to the redump to make sure it is a correct dump: http://redump.org/discs/system/ps2/letter/d/?page=2

Have you tried other games and do they work?

That was my thoughts too, if 5 works you'd imagine 5:XL would too. I've just checked the MD5 and it matches so the dump should be good. I might try the EUR dump instead of the US one.

I have had other games running - Need for Speed Underground 2 ran (at a low frame rate as expected) and I've had Freestyle Metal X running too (which seems to run fine).
