PS3 Diagnosing cause of corruption

I bought a new 500gb hdd in November, and after spending 2 days transferring everything between hdds, and setting up a new cfw ps3, seemed fine. Then twice in the past 2 weeks, turned my system on and was greeted by loading stopping at the Home Screen with no xmb and had to hold button for 10 seconds to force shutdown, then restart system to be greeted by file system corrupt. Hdd light was solid on when frozen on the Home Screen, but definitely wasn't loading anything.
What can I use to diagnose if the hdd is at fault so I can try and return if that's the issue? Thanks

Check S.M.A.R.T report at least from short test (by which tool doesn't matter).
I ended up using sentinel, crystal disk, gsmart and even bios. None of them can give me any info, smart not supported on the drive.

What method/site did you use to install CFW?

That could possibly be the issue.

Both the ps3's had been unlocked earlier this year using original bgtoolset site, so that isn't a worry. This drive was in my ps3, which has been running fine since june/July, I just wanted to upgrade my internal and external to 500gb each. Upgraded the drives 11/Dec, didn't use the ps much for about a week. Turned it on around 20th, crashed on startup, corruption, spend 2 days restoring user data & game data. Didn't use since then because of Xmas etc, switched on last night, and this greeted me >.>

How do You connecting it? Does is SATA directly to mother board? If connected by some USB junk, it is possible that controller not supporting all commands. It is not possible that disk produced after atapi4 standard would not support S.M.A.R.T. If this is normal direct connection like I described on first, this point to some serious hardware issues with this disk (eg. fw or service area corruption, beyond to repair in home).

Yes, it was direct motherboard connection, and disconnected all secondary drives to minimise chances of checking wrong drive. I tried many programs, even tried formatting the drive to ntfs mbr and checking again, but still no info. Drive ended up being returned and replaced with a WD blue drive. Currently ftp'ing my backed up data, fingers crossed this is the end of it.
Thanks to all who replied and tried to assist, much appreciated
