PS3 Do Superslim PS3 consoles with 16GB eMMC have problems with PS3HEN ?

Not that I'm know of. Afaik, it's thought that emmc consoles are like NAND ones, where all of the firmware is stored on the chips. I know that when I replaced the hdd in mine, I didn't have to reinstall the firmware, so it lends credence to that

I can see how it could be highly sensitive, because afaik, nand consoles are similar to emmc, in that the whole flash is contained on the chips. From what I understand, this is mostly an issue for corrupted or malformed xmb mods. Those consoles can be bricked to where you need a flasher, while a nor console would just need a reinstall of the firmware. Unfortunately, not enough is known about the emmc systems, so afaik, a brick can be permanent. Could be wrong though. Maybe that's the problem?

HEN has no issues on the eMMC models, but it's highly recommended to install a real hard disk before doing any mod.

Why? because if something happens or you play around with critical files, you'll end up with a brick. There's no known way to recover even with hardware flashers, so for safety:
-1. install a real HDD
-2. install HEN

then if you make a bad decision and you break the PS3, removing the HDD and doing a disk format would be enough to recover

what's really odd about the emmc models is that the first time I inserted an hdd into my superslim, it asked if I wanted to copy or transfer over the data from the emmc/internal flash (forgot the wording). this took about 20 minutes. I removed and reformatted the hdd at some point, because I was having issues with my psn account and paypal, and I was just going to return the system and hdd. the guy who sold it to me said I could just keep the system, and he refunded my money. I returned the hdd, then stuck the system in a closet for a few years. once I decided to go completely legit, I ordered a new hdd, inserted it into the superslim, and this time it didn't ask me to transfer content. it just acted like it had detected a new hdd. all of my settings, psn account, everything was still intact when it got to the xmb. I don't really understand if it's copied, moved, or what or how an hdd would be able to overcome bad flash files, unless they're actually copied, and it only asked to copy originally, because it detected content? I dunno. it's confusing to me.

Can you confirm that my understanding is correct?

  • if the console only has eMMC then the PS3HEN gets installed on the eMMC. if you corrupt the eMMC you brick the console.
  • if the console has eMMC AND a HDD then PS3HEN gets installed on the HDD. and if you corrupt the HDD you can reformat the HDD. you won't get a brick in this case.
correct?
