PS3 Error during update - 8002F14E

Hello guys, I need some assistance regarding a jailbroken PS3 Slim.
A friend of mine has a jailbroken PS3 with some games on it.
He was able to play them without any issues up until couple of days ago when he accidentally updated the system.
PS3 is now "locked" on system update screen. Process reaches 56% every time and stops there with error code 8002F14E.
I am unable to run Safe Mode as well.
Is there any way of resolving this without buying a new HDD and if so, what would be correct course of action here?
I tried following some guides online in order to boot from USB with a new firmware but was unable to bypass update screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Error with installing Firmware update.
3 known causes:

(BD)Drive not found or disconnected
It's the most common cause for this error

or

CoreOS region failure when in log "Update Core OS Package done(0x8002f14e)"

or

Revoke region failure when in log "Update Package Revoke list done(0x8002f14e)"

FYI
CoreOS & Revoke regions are areas in the Flash memory chip (NOR or NAND/emmc depending on model).

Hi, thank you for fast response. I was thinking it could be bad HDD but my friend states he was able to browse and play games normally before updating the system which is weird that HDD gone defective at exactly that point.
Is there anything else I can try before recommending him to buy a new HDD?
And if I replace HDD, is there some detailed guide on how to install system files and jailbreak it again please?
Thanks in advance!

It's not HDD issue. The problem lies in your Blue ray drive. Either it is not connected or not working properly.

You misread.
If it's a drive problem, it's the Bluray Disc drive (BD).

Your friend should try installing Evilnat 4.88 CFW PUP.
If it does not work (same error), he could try installing OFW 4.88 (it's easy to jailbreak again later).
And if that does not work either (same error), he can try installing a noBD CFW.
If the noBD firmware installs correctly, it means something is wrong with the BD drive.
If that's the case, the BD problem needs to be fixed as using a noBD firmware is not a long term solution, some features just cannot work without a functional BD.

Hi again, sorry for my lack of knowledge.
Would you be able to send me links of these procedures in order i should try them please?
And how can i actually bypass this update error and boot from USB in order to perform suggested procedures?

There is nothing to it.
It's the standard official update procedure from USB.

The OFW 4.88 PUP can be downloaded from Sony PlayStation website.
The Evilnat 4.88.2 CFW pup file can be downloaded from its release thread in this forum.
You will need to look for a noBD CFW pup file, I dunno what is available for 4.88.
Note that PUP files available in this forum have usually been vetted by a number of people, when a file is found to be bad, links are automatically removed. You use customised pup files at your own risk though.

For each firmware installation attempt:
Put the PUP file on a USB stick formatted in fat32 (MBR partition only).
The path of the pup file on usb should look exactly like this (in upper case):
PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP
From recovery mode, try to update the firmware.

When i format USB how can i check if its MBR format?
Also, how exactly can i enter recovery mode?
I was following guide by pressing and holding power button until it beeps 3 times, release, press and hold again until double beep but PS3 still brings update error screen, never enters safe mode.

Use a decent partitioning tool & you will be able to choose the partition type.

Recovery/safe mode is accessed through the appropriate power button sequence.

You should post a screenshot of the error screen.

You are a new user & don't have permissions to add attachments.
You will get those perms automatically after a few more approved posts.
In the meantime you must host your pictures elsewhere..

So basically the system restarts the update procedure automatically in safe mode.
It must ask you to provide a PUP file on USB, if so you can just feed him the different PUP files.
