PS3 external HDD not recognized

Hi all,
I just got myself a new 4tb external HDD for my PS3 (Rebug 4.85 with webman mod).
But webman mod does not recognize the HDD.
I also tried to refresh the USB with webman but no success.
I have tried to re-format in NTFS, make partitions lower than 1tb if it would be size related.
Does anyone know what could be the problem?
Before that I was using a 2tb HDD without any problem.
Is it because the HDD is too recent? too big?
Thanks for your help!

Well sir you just met the 2tb limit imposed from the OS. You have two choices one may work the other will with a caveat.

First make two separate partitions. This works with most drives and is ideal. But MUST be MBR not GPT with a 64k cluster size to be detected.

Now if it still doesn't work you can use the full 4tb no matter how it's formated using a NAS storage and ps3netserv. Down fall of this is must be connected to a network to access your games.

Give these a try and you should be up and running quickly. And while using NTFS you will need to run prepNTFS for webMAN to see the drive.

#1 Make sure partition type is MBR (not GPT)
#2 Create a NTFS partition <= 2TB
*although you *may* be able to format to 4 TB and it see 4TB, you may run into issues once you exceed 2tb of data
**not confirmed but be safe
#3 Make sure hard drive is not on a hub and directly connected into PS3 (right port)
#4 Not all hard drives are recognized by PS3. If you have a hard drive that also has a hub built it, it won't work.

good luck - report results

EDIT: I said MFT but meant MBR - made correction

Hello,
I tried all the tips you gave but nothing worked, but thanks anyway for sharing your thoughts so quickly.
Converted the disk in 64k MBR (which then turns into 2TB disk without the possibility to use the whole space), but still didn't work, I can't see anything in webman mod nor multiman.
Seems that I don't have other possibilities to make it work, I don't want to install a network for this.
I will dedicate my old HDD to the console then :(

Good point, it's a Toshiba Canvio Basics 4TB
Then is standard, he was asking because there are some HDDs that comes in a enclosure that does some special functions, like encryption, or doing automatic backups of a preconfigured directory from a PC by pressing a button of the enclosure, etc...
The toshiba canvios doesnt have anything like that, the circuit board just have an standard chip doing the SATA<---to---> USB conversion, so his compatibility with the PS3 is as good/bad as any other 4TB USB HDD

You should try with ManaGunZ it have his own NTFS driver integrated, and in the last versions it was implemented some features to support large HDD drives

It does not work with ManaGunZ either... if I plug my other old HDD, then ManaGunz finds the games directly, but nothing happens with the Toshiba.
Does the HDD need to be in a specific NTFS setting to be recognized then?

at least I can say that ManaGunZ works with a HDD in exFAT format (another HDD that I have but this one is 1TB).
I'll dig more tomorrow to see if I can make it work with the 4TB in exFAT (I did a quick test and it was a failure).

OK I'm giving up, no matter what I tried it did not work.
The HDD switches off by itself after some minutes, so I guess the PS does not recognize it at all and then the HDD goes is rest mode.
I have tried all the given options above, I have tried several partitions with different cluster sizes, in NTFS and exFAT, with webman, multiman, ManaGunZ, prepISO...

Maybe the limitations are brand related, because when I read this: https://www.psx-place.com/threads/massive-ps3-library-help.34949/
He claims that he managed to do it with specific WD tool.
I've been looking on Toshiba's website, there are no specific tools for HDDs, there is only a diagnostic tool available.
Well I'm disappointed, but maybe in the future there will be some extended compatibility?
Cheers

An alternative - PS3NETSRV
Load up that drive with up to capacity (4TB) with PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP ISO's
Then configure webman to "look" at your computer running PS3NETSRV
*All is not lost

yes I got that, but it was not the idea to set up a network in this specific case.
I only have a laptop and the PS3 should be easily moved to some place without bringing the laptop.
Maybe there will be some improvements done in future, who knows.
Thanks anyway to you all and to the devs that are doing a great job :)
