PS3 Fault finding YLOD with the SYSCON - First steps and Error reporting

Here bro, is the link where you can define the Syscon error codes:-
https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Syscon_Error_Codes

Error code 1001: says it's usually the NEC / Tokins on the CELL

Error code 1004: says "Power Supply"

Error code 1701: says "CELL attention"

Error code 14FF: says "Check stop"
Sounds familiar...
All those errors are non-errors. And I am glad that the wiki mentions that too.

No, dont get suspicious about NEC Tokins, or PSU, or CPU...

These errors are only confirming what you already knew: Your machine is fine, @St3v3b82

All those can be triggered naturally by simple stuff like power outages, unexpected shutdowns, a software crash, etc etc. They are non-errors first. Only when there is another real problem, it may be worth looking at them, but even then they are best ignored because they can mean nothing too.

My old CECH2003A from psjailbreak days had started to YLOD a few months ago, but would usually start up after the 2nd attempt (I also found doing a display reset would help but that might be coincidental).

Things have progressed, would I be correct in thinking it's probably in need of a NEC/TOKIN replacement?

It's running now & seems to stay on fine but I would like to be able to power off without worrying it will never turn on.

I guess a broken BGA would make problems during playing/heating, so you may think right I guess... Lets see what the experts say :)

I'm curious... in what condition is your PS3? Did you a delid or repaste at some point?

With those errors, yes. I would suspect Tokins.

It's been in my possession since 2010 and I have never removed the lid of any chip.

I have changed the thermal paste on a ps3 before, but I can't say for certain if I did on this one. Temperature wise, I just did took GT6 for a spin and got the CPU up to 75 degrees C and RSX to 72 degrees C.

I ran up last of us and it shut down after about 5 minutes into the prologue, but it came back on again. Interestingly I went back into the game and it started a few seconds before it shutdown & it then shutdown immediately. So something about that scene must be upsetting it.

It's certainly not happy...

Thanks. I've seen a few people suggest piggybacking capacitors and various types of capacitors suggested. What is the best thing for me to try?

Piggybacking may be the easiest method. But it depends on wht you're comfortable with. Best method would of course be to replace them with 12x 470uF TaPol (9 mOhm ESR or less each). I made a custom PCB for that, but due to manufaturing issues I pulled it down pending a revision.

Do you have a mouser/digikey/whatever link for appropriate ones?

When do you plan on revising the pcb?

Frankly I'm not comfortable with anything involving hardware as over the years I've discovered it's alergic to me, this will be a bit of a leap of faith.

Yes, in my signiture is a link to more links. In there you'll find the Tantalizer release thread. Links to the caps are in there.

Sign in to see my signiture.

When I'm good and ready...lol!

Seriously tho, I have multiple ongoing projects (several frankies, probing voltages for power on sequencing, developing custom fan tables, compiling syscon error codes and updating the wiki with my findings, and more). So I kind of just work on whichever I feel like. It's a hobby, so when something gets annoying or tedius I'll just table it for later and work on something that interests me.

If you are not experianced with soldering then I don't reccomend starting on the PS3. It's harder than it looks. You'll need a temperature controlled iron, good tips, and you'll still struggle against the thick ground plane. But it's doable.

Not trying to be a debbie downer, but can't emphasize enough the importance of good tools. I'm a hobbyist too, and fairly experienced with soldering, and working on the PS3 has been pretty challenging (mostly due to how small the parts are and the ground plane beast)! I upgraded my station to the KSGER station Voultar recommends on youtube (look him up), and it's made such a difference. If you want to get into soldering, definitely spend just a tad more on a ksger and some tips (investment will be around $60-$70), then buy something cheap from a thrift store and take it all apart, then get some practice on.

Hello,
Again I have a broken CECHH04 with DIA-001 motherboard. But this time there are new errors :)

Code:

I will be grateful if you help me with these codes - 1214, 1103

EDIT: I forgot to mention that after turning on the power (from the button on the back), a red light starts flashing with 3 beeps. After 1 or more presses of the power button (front), the red LED stops flashing and the console can be started. Then it gives a yellow light for 1 to 10 seconds and a noisy fan.

EDIT2: After many attempts to turn on and a pressure test on the CPU/GPU, I was able to turn it on - showed an image on the TV and YLOD after 20 sec. Again the same error - 1214
I attach the whole log.

I stuffed up and put it at v5 and now the light won't pop up on the reader. I have been having so much trouble trying to get this syscon thing going. what can i do to fix this problem? or am i forever screwed?

You most likely fried the syscon as it needs to be on 3.3v. The reader won't be damaged by setting it to 5v and should see red light when only plugged into pc. If the red light turns off after wiring it into the ps3 then you most likely damaged the syscon.

Here is the whole log.

Before unlocking the internal access, a red light flashed again, sometimes stopping blinking and could be started normally. Only once I managed to get a picture on the TV, which was after the internal access was unlocked.

I'm almost sure it's a BGA problem, because I was able to start once with a pressure test.
But I still wanted to know what the error means - 1214 :)
