PS3 Frankenstein PHAT PS3: CECHA with 40nm RSX

I have already carried out a CELL reballing but no usual error, at this point I think that the CELL is dead.
doubt, scalped CELL or not?
if scalped, so check all the BLUE resisistors down the board (under CELL), if some have less than 50-60 ohms (it can be shorted to GND on one side) and you get XDR link arror after 20sec of start, so you doing wrong reball without heatspreader, CELL just tricky to reball without, it's very thin and some sections can be shorted cause of bending.

Solution: put HEATSPREADER to CELL with 6.0 balls reballed, don't forget covered the hole back of the MOBO and than solder as usual.

Spent a few weeks to solder SCALPED CELL, it's looks like chorcoal, but work flawless. Now with exp. can solder any SCALP CELL the first try.

CELL is super reliable processor, but on fat boards so offen need to be reball, especialy on SEM-001.
----
ofcourse it can be XDR it self, if you can - swap, but i never meet with dead XDR. So check resistors and low resistance.

FYI, maybe a help for some. I had the issue of noPS2_Menu - the case of black screen on PS2 with working menu, and what fixed it was changing the optical drive entirely and remarrying the drive. The drive was faulty prior to that it did not load the disks but the ps2 ISOs didn't work either.

I do not think it's related to the frankenstein per se, but I've seen someone mentioning it and thought it could be of use.

Ive got an A01 that wont display any video. I have put a second 40nm RSX on it, swapped the Southbridge and still no video. I did the resistor mod on it and I double checked that I put the 10k resistor in place.

The console wont single or double beep to do a video reset or get into safe mode. It just turns on and after holding the button it shuts off.

System was opened, no signs of rework, only thing damaged was the BD FPC connecter.

I have same problem with my CECHB (NTSC-J) 40nm frankenstein console. Only difference is that i am not able to open ingame menu and need to force shutdown console. I cannot see white ps2 logo, just black screen. However, I am able to sync controller. Could it be also bad EE based on these symptoms? PS3 games working normal etc.

I also tried to set netemu in the webman settings and after that ps2 games working perfectly. When I am running default hardware settings ps2 isos or ps2 game discs not working.

I am considering to replace EE GS and CXD9208 ics. Any thoughts?
UPDATE. Replaced CXD9208 ic and now i am able to open ingame menu. However, no ps2 logo using disc or isos. Screen blinking twice while booting ps2 game.

UPDATE. Replaced EE GS, but no fix.

UPDATE. Replaced new 40nm RSX, no fix. Still black screen with ps2 games. NoPS2_Menu

UPDATE. Replaced new EE GS rams. no fix.

Hi guys, I made a Frankenstein, PS3 works perfectly, the only strange thing I notice, when I turn off the PS3 the LED flashes for 17 seconds and emits 3 beeps, without giving a red LED, what do the three beeps indicate when the PS3 turns off?.

Hey man! Don't know if this will help or not but a month ago I fixed a CECHA01 which wasn't sending 5V to the drive. The problem ended up being C3247 (25V 47u) which was completely shorted to ground. It's also in parallel with C3246. C3247 was a tantalum cap on the COK-001 boards but was changed to a electrolytic cap (16V 39u) on the COK-002 board. It's not a perfect match to your situation but maybe the heat from replacing Q6010 caused one of the caps to go? I hope this helps!

Slight correction: C3247 is the cap for the 12v supply to the BD connector, not the 5v supply. If you look closely at the schematic, the lines cross, but they are not connected by a little dot. On first read I thought the same thing, but from probing the board I knew it was not the case, and re-checked the schematic (page 15, sheet 1-11). It's rated 25V because it's for the 12V supply. C3246 is for the 5v supply.

Electrolytic is a type of cap. Tantalum is the material. There are tantalum, aluminum, etc. versions of electrolytic caps. If you replace it, make sure you install it with the correct polarity. These types of caps can age over time, so it probably just failed from aging. Lots of TVs die because the electrolytic caps go bad (and leak).

I've seen a lot of comments in this thread about the PS2 black screen issue, after searching for it myself, and I just wanted to pass on the comments from a modder I spoke to, as I've got the same issue (black screen, can sync controller and access menu to exit) and I was looking into getting mine frankenstein'd to fix it. This dude seems to be the only guy in Australia doing frankie mods, and has been doing modding professionally for like 20 years - so he seems to have a lot of experience/knowledge. But basically he said this;

"Ps2 black screen is not the rsx. It is unrepairable unfortunately. I have spent days on them replacing all ps2 hardware/rsx and more and still black screen"

I just wanted to pass this on and potentially save people from going down some expensive paths, as I was about to. It's a total bummer, but I guess short of finding some new cause for it, there's no current solution.

ACE?
There were few success stories after rsx reballing. So) at least we can try
I have one cecha00 with ps2 black screen problem. It worked before frankie mod.

SB Uart should be able to tell you the OS versoin
I'd also like to know, as I bought a CECHA with a dead RSX and want to know if it will even work with a 40nm RSX before buying one. Would suck to go through the whole Frankie process only for it to not work because the console is on 2.70 or something :( So what in the Southbridge UART process would tell me the FW?

Why do PS2 games require a certain internal temperature for stability on full hardware BC fats? Made a thread about it on here recently but sadly no one has chimed in to reply :(

Wire up the syscon and write:
w 7202 2
then solder here and open putty, set you com port to whatever it is and your baud rate to: 115200 and power her on and you'll see things like

Boot Loader SE Version 4.8.9 (Build ID: 5366,50740, Build Date: 2022-02-04_12:51:26) SDK Version: 489.00

Which will tell you the version (here its 4.89)

Thanks a ton for the info Shawn! I actually delidded the RSX a couple days ago and ran a hot air gun with a tiny nozzle over only the die at 150c for a couple minutes and it's been alive ever since lol

Of course I expect it to die at any moment, at which point I'll commence the 40nm Frankie project! Oh and if you're curious it was on 4.50 when it first powered up (so I would've been fine with a 40nm already), now got it running 4.91 Evilnat, and made sure to test the PS2 hardware and yeah, it works fine too!
