PS3 Has anyone here changed the BD drive on their backwards compatible ps3? If so have you had issues?

Hello everyone, I have a very minty cechc04 which i truly love, its been delidded, cleaned, and has very few hours on it.

Only problem was its drive was failing, it was struggling with blu rays and dvds (including ps2 games)

So, I searched my stack of ps3 drives, and found one of the later fat ones, which has the two separate lasers, I thought Id try it out because I had heard that the 2-laser drives where the best and most reliable.

So I did the classic process, with installing no-bd firmware etc etc, and it worked fine.

I put a ps3 disc in, played just fine, it was noticeably faster. But then, I popped a ps2 disc in there, and, nothing. It just shows up as a data disc, same with ps1 games, put them in, reads them as data discs.

I have battled with this problem for a year, I have made another post about this here on this forum, noone knows whats happening. Its not a huge deal, I can still load the isos from my internall hdd and keep the hardware emulation, its just really annoying that I cant just put a ps2/ps1 disc in my ps3 and play them

Ive tried enabling/disabling cobra, uninstalling webman/multiman, downgrade to 4.88 or other versions, pretty much everything.

The only thing I havent tried is , well, just changing the bd drive. But why? Why would I have to try that? From what I read people did the exact same thing as me and it changed nothing. No issues, nothing. And this drive i put on it is a very good one, even though it sees the ps1/ps2 discs as data discs even them it reads immediately

So my question is, has anyone done a bd drive swap on a bc ps3 lately? Did you have any issues? Could it be a weird incompatibility with the firmware? I know this drive i put on it apart from the same connector is completely different, but since the install process went fine whats the issue here?

I know if you have an SSD drive, this could potentially cause some issues. It could also be the BD drive itself. Are you able to copy the PS2 disc in webman without any issues?

Now that you mention, yes I do actually have an ssd, its a 250gb samsung evo.
Could that really be the issue? And I actually did put it on my ps3 when I changed the bd drive.
I was planning to change the drive and put a 1tb hdd on it, I realized the ssd is overkill and the space is too little
If this is really the cause of this issue I thank you in advance kind stranger

It's definitely a possibility. Try putting in a normal HD and see if it works. If it does, then you know, if it doesn't you can simply put back the SSD, and all your saves, etc, will be intact

nobd firmware? You are trying to remarry the drive, right? I use a BD410 dual laser drive on my BC model, and I have never encountered a ps1/2 disc that was a data disc.

As Timbo says, maybe your ssd causing problems. Another thing to keep in mind is that a newer bluray won't work with SACD playback. Maybe not so important, but if you want a fully functional machine then... Think this has to do with the BMD cards (version) on the bluray players.

I have done the whole process, the drive is working and it can play ps3 games just fine

Did you replace the whole assembly ? Daughter board and drive ?
If yes is the old daughter board working ?

So it's the SSD that affects the optical drive?
It affects the ability to play PS2 discs. It's well documented that copied burned PS2 games definitely have issues when swapping to SSD.

Not only that, you will news the original 60GB HD to definitely ensure you get PS2 playback on your console. There is an entire thread on it already on this site.

It's concerning that this can seem to now happen on original PS2 discs, unless, of course, you're using burned discs as well

Thanks for your answer. I have only temporarily installed SSD in my Slim. My 2 BC Frankie use 1T 7200rpm HDDs and they have no problem reading the discs.

It's unknown why swapping to SSD can cause this. For some people, everything is fine. For others, it's not.

All we do know with certainty is that swapping to SSD can trigger the issue, but we currently have no idea why.

Yes, I've read a lot about ps3 not being suitable for ssd threads, but that's also true, the ps3 doesn't have a trim function which would cause the SSD to wear out too quickly.
