Hdd problem

alright, so my cfw ps3 has gone throught so far 2 HDD's, or so i think, first one game load times started getting really slow and the freezing became too occasional, untill it gave up... i blamed myself for positioning the ps3 vertically while it was running, second one the ps3 dropped like 4 feet to the ground while running, hdd gave up afterwards, i decided not to buy a new one, i tried an old 40gb one that worked somewhat okay... installed the firmware and the ps3 was running normal, untill i tried installing multiman then it kept freezing, i tried an older version and it worked, now when i tried to put games on it either by ftp or usb transfer... suprise suprise, it kept freezing again, had to force shut down and data corrupt so it had to format, and now everytime it boots up i can only see the theme moving but no menu icons or any writing show up untill after like 3 minutes, and multiman didnt install, giving error 8003 something, i went to recovery menu and reinstalled the software to fix any corrupt data that could cause this, the pkg install worked but when i go to multiman it says cannot install data on hdd, and when i get out i only see the theme with no menu icons for like 3 minutes again.... i'm thinking this is a symptom for a failing hard drive, because now the ps3 boots up to a black screen and wont even let me access safe mode, i put in my other broken hdd and i can go to safe mode okay, so the ps3 is still working, i'm sorry if i made you read this far but this is really frustrating me, are these symptoms of an already failing drive ? is the common freezing a normal part of cfw systems ?should i spend money on a new hard drive ? or could this be a problem with the internal components of the ps3, making it a serial HDD killer, after all the stuff i've done to it i'm starting to think it might have taken a toll on the system itself, i have my eyes on a 500gb hybrid drive thinking it could work with no freezing or any problems like this... please help and thanks for reading, sorry for writing too much, by the way my ps3 is a slim cech 2004A, i bought it used and it already had a cfw from the beginning, right now its on 4.76 ferrox and i dont care about anything exept playing games with no psn or any modding

yeah sounds like hdd. i had problems with hen untill i changed hdd...it would take forever to load anything. also dont use hybrid or ssd or anything fancy. the ps3 is so old it wont make a difference. just get normal one thats not too old.

Check S.M.A.R.T of this HDD (on Windows remember to NOT agree on "disk initalization" or You will loose partition table).

so now that you changed it is everything normal ? how frequent do you get freezing ? is your ps3 really loud when you play for alot of time ? i was thinking of getting an sshd or an ssd because i'm hoping it would last more than a normal hdd and its less likely to get damaged or keep freezing

yeah its good now. no freezing anymore. if your fan is too loud you try changing webman fan settings if you are using it. auto 2 is supposed to be quieter unless it starts getting pretty hot.the main way to prevent hdd dying if try not to unplug (or hold down power) if i seems stuck. press the power button (quick press and let go) and it will usually shut down by itself even if looks like its stuck.
